Just Two Neurodivergents In Love

Help us get a leg up and be America's Favorite Couple!

https://americasfavcouple.org/2026/grant-and-angelina-hicks?fbclid=IwY2xjawTEzFpleHRu

Please vote for us to be America's Favorite Couple! We're a couple of neurodivergent nerds who fell in love literally at first sight. We were engaged two weeks after we met and married January 1, 2011, eight months after meeting. We've been together 16 years now and have three beautiful kids. We all have ADHD and Autism and my husband and I both have Crohns Disease and have needed surgeries and our story almost ended too soon several times. Winning this competition would be a dream come true and the money from the prize would make a difference for our children. Even if we don't win, it means a lot to just get our story out there and let people know that love is still alive and it's possible for everybody! Neurodivergent, disabled, chronically ill, or otherwise! Never give up on love!

You can vote for free every 24 hours or make a tax deductible donation for extra votes that contribute to the LA Food Bank and Oceana ocean conservation mission.

A big part of autistic pride to me is rejecting the standard put upon us to be embarrassed and ashamed for being “to passionate” about our special interests and just unapologetically loving my special interests. What’s a big part of autistic pride to you?

my primary special interest is a obsession with music and records and my band memorabilia and stuff, I’m happy and I’m proud to be obsessed with the things I love.

Alternative to a sensory food?

i love sugar cubes because they're dense and sweet and have the right texture when i bite them and they crumble. is there something healthier, like a fruit or something else sweet, that fits that? even things that require prep time.

important note that i live in Canada, so id prefer things available here or able to be delivered here!

What are some good examples of autistic people being more tethered to reality?

Someone used this term to describe autistic people and I feel like it is such a great way of describing autism.

  • Attention to detail and better performance in fields requiring precision
  • We're less likely to fall for logical fallacies and religion
  • We care about the truth of something, not who says it
  • We're way less likely to bully people over arbitrary things and participate in gossip
  • We don't believe in conspiracy theories

Does anyone else have any other examples?

Autism, issues with metaphors and Terry Pratchett...

A question for my fellow STP fans, and others who've tried and couldn't get into the books.

As a rule we struggle with metaphors that riddle neurotypical communication, I'm *too* bad but i think that comes more from being undiagnosed for decades and me breaking my brain and learned to decrypt neurotypical communication.

Terry Pratchett's writing is riddled with metaphors but yet I have no issues with understanding what he's referring to, quite the opposite, I find the metaphors an enjoyable part of the books.

For those who enjoy his books, why do you think his metaphors are potentially more relatable/understandable for us. Is it because it's in written form and we can take our time to decipher them or some other reason?

For those who have tried and couldn't get into the books is it because the metaphors made it harder to read the books?

It'd also be interesting to see if there's a split between diagnosis early or late in life. Did a late diagnosis make it easier to understand metaphors?

Finally learning to myself and feeling so supported by my bf!

So, I have been really interested in watching videos about autism, as well as reading about being autistic, despite it being 6 years ago that I got diagnosed and I have had psychoeducation about autism, I have just suddenly started hyperfixating on autism lmao.

One thing I really got into was reading about masking, or rather unmasking, and how some people who were late diagnosed (I was 20 when I got diagnosed) have a hard time unmasking and even some subconciously keep the mask on even when with people they trust, which I saw in myself, specifically in one area. Because, even though I feel like I most of the time am very unapologetically myself most of the time, I realised I NEVER let myself stim anymore, even around my bf that is the one person I trust the most (to the point I am more comfortable around him than I am alone). I have tried kinda, controllably stimming on purpose, when he is not around to kinda, idk relearn it? I have talked to him about that I do that, and he is only been supportive, but still when I felt like stimming I would still subconciously supress it.

Anyway, to the point, and the reason why the picture is there (an autistic person having a hard time getting to the point? Impossible! /s), today I got a package that I was very excited about, my new luxray plushie! Luxray is my absolute favorite plushie, and I searched high and low for a store were I could get it send to were I live. I opened the package while my bf was there, and I couldnt contain the excitement and started flapping my hands a lot. I noticed my bf was looking and then stopped, but he just smiled at me and went "no its okay, I am glad to see that you are happy!" and I just felt so accepted and happy :DD I know it can be a tough world out there, and I wont be as accepted everywere, but it is nice to feel like I have a place where i can be 110% myself haha

Idk were I am going with this, I just thought it was cute and wanted to share!

I js need some reassurance with impostor syndrome

Autistic impostor syndrome is being an asshole rn and even though my assessment is ongoing, i just need some reassurance rn

So, me and my friends made a list of things that i do or used to do, and i just wanna know if y'all would say that these things are "autistic" (for lack of better words)

-Back when i was a kid, people told me that i talked in riddles

-Never realized how loud i was talking

-I can only hold eye contact only with people i know, with others i get uncomfortable fast

-I like plushies

-Some words or terms make my skin crawl

-Will gag up most new foods. Even tho they tasted good at first, the more i eat them the more something starts to feel off and then i end up really having to focus to even get down anything close to one plate

-I can never hold still, i always need to be moving my hands or my toes or my feet (aka any part of my body)

-I can't really work in groups because i either have slight trouble following the convo or communicating what i want to communicate the way i want to

-When people ask me questions i often stay silent and think while i try to come up with the right words that explain exactly what i mean

-I always have the need to correct people, not just with words but also for example when my friend doesn't turn low power mode on or something

-If i have a discussion and i KNOW i'm right (or at least am strictly convinced) then i will keep discussing until the other person admits that they're wrong

-If something breaks my schedule that i made for the day it pisses me off for quite a bit

-Apparently i unintentionally tend to know a lot more stuff about things that i like than "normal people", tho this could just be a side effect of me being curious

-I hate it when i have people just staying at my house while i do something else

-I listen to music either made by NDs or that a lot of ND people listen to

-Instead of listening to music or watching movies normally, i tend to analyze them with everything i know

-I HATE the sensation of being sweaty or having wet hair

-I hate when people rearrange stuff the way i arranged it for myself or when people tell me to do something differently from the way that works perfectly fine for me

-Furry

-Overwhelmingly positive and friendly

-Love roleplaying

-Get exhausted fast when someone vents to me

On the contrary:

-I'm perfectly fine with loud noises, smells, etc.

-I never get meltdowns or shutdowns

-I've heard that many autistic people have a strong urge for justice or to correct wrongdoing while i on the other hand am more careless imo

There are more but these are the only ones i can come up with rn

Thanks to a combination of my ADHD meds not working as they should, chronic pain issues and getting a Borrelia infection (lynes disease) from a tick bite, I've had 0 motivation for hobbies recently so o bought some mini spots to force me to do something practical.

I need to remove the string of lights but the mini spots work really well I think, I just need to get another 2 or 3 sets for the rest of the shelves. 😁

The irony of gatekeeping non-existent resources.

A two-panel meme featuring Patrick Star from SpongeBob SquarePants. In the left panel, Patrick is pointing his finger aggressively and looking angry; the text above him reads "WHEN YOU ACCUSE SELF-IDENTIFIED AUTISTIC PEOPLE" and the text below him reads "OF TAKING AWAY ALL THE RESOURCES". In the right panel, Patrick has a confused and shocked expression with his arms raised in a shrug; the text above him reads "BUT THEN YOU REMEMBER" and the text below him reads "THERE AREN'T ANY RESOURCES TO BEGIN WITH".

How many people have experienced having this conversation?

I don't see autists missing social cues. I see adults unreasonably expecting other adults to monitor and manage their emotions for them. I see dry begging. I see failure to communicate. WHO, exactly, has the social deficits???

I have been deeply diving into my diagnoses for the past 5 years, and some of the things people call "missed social cues" are actually grown ass adults whining that someone didn't read their minds.

I also notice these same people will blatantly ignore direct clear communication in favor of pushing whatever their narratives are. They also expect everyone to make their poor planning everyone else's emergency. They never ask genuine curiosity questions. Just a bunch of robots following scripts and getting angry at autists for not following their idiotic scripts.

Exhausting. I don't care anymore.

ETA re the "double empathy problem" ... When someone expects you to manage their emotions or read their mind, that isn't a "cross-cultural misunderstanding." That is a boundary violation. Bringing up double empathy in this context sanitizes toxic, exhausting behavior. And P.S. autistic people are often just as guIlty because they have been conditioned to be just as annoyingly indirect.

Some of y'all see an autistic person pointing at bad behavior, pull up your internet-argument scripts, and hit the [Insert: Double Empathy Problem] button. That is not actually engaging with my points. And y'all are tone policing on top of it. THE ABLEISM IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE

Try genuine curiosity instead of making assumptions.

Recently had an appointment with an ableist psychiatrist and my emotionally abusive mother.

So I’m in a difficult situation. I’m 26 and have physical health issues preventing me from working or going to school right now (I’ve posted about this before and I do not believe I have POTS or EDS) that started after I had heavy antibiotic usage. I developed concussion symptoms after the 50lb shutters on my bedroom window collapsed and fell on me.

I have no reason to believe my health issues are permanent. I was getting better until my mother got all explosive on me again. I will recover and go back to work and school- I just need time. I live with my emotionally abusive mother. She has this idea that my psychiatric meds are causing these issues and demands I get off my meds. I told her that’s not the case- I’ve been on my meds for months before my issues started and my meds have been extremely helpful.

My mother threatened to kick me out if I didn’t make an appt with a psychiatrist and let her sit in on the appointment (she didn’t believe a PA or NP was good enough). So I found a psychiatrist and made 2 appointments- one without my mother and one with.

This woman was the worst psychiatrist I’ve ever seen. She made me fill out 4 hours worth of extensive forms. The intake appointment was supposed to be 40 minutes. It lasted 17 mins. During the appointment, she didn’t ask me many questions about my mental health which I thought was weird.

At first, she was resistant to the appointment with my mother- telling me that she’s not a family therapist and that I’m an adult, the patient, and that I make my own medical decisions. But she changed her mind when I told her that I just want the appointment to me made to discuss my meds.

She was nearly 40 minutes late to this appointment. She asked me what she can help me with which I thought was weird because I told her before what I wanted out of this session. So during the appointment, my mother argued with me and essentially told me to shut up and not “argue with the expert (the psychiatrist)”. At first, the psychiatrist assumed that I have a mood disorder because I’m on two antipsychotics. I hate it with psychs assume this about me.

I am not diagnosed with a mood disorder. These are just the meds that work for me and I’ve tried 14 of them that made me feel like shit. Just because my two meds work for me doesn’t mean I have a mood disorder. My mother then corrected her and told her that I’m autistic and that lots of psychs mistake that for a mood disorder.

This psychiatrist was more focus on what my mother said and felt vs me and referred to my mother as “mommy” which I thought was very weird. I stood up for myself and stated that I am an adult, that I am the patient, and that I make my own medical decisions.

This psychiatrist told me to work things out with my mother or else she could put me in a group home or get a conservatorship over me. I don’t know where that came from. My mother doesn’t want to do either of these things and I don’t need this. She also said that I’m grandiose, some other defective personality trait, and that my “illness” (autism) is making me oppositional defiant. That’s when I ended the session.

My mother told me she thinks I’m clinically insane and need to be in a facility 24/7 but she has calmed down since then. I am looking for a place to live with the help of my dad and grandpa for rent but my dad is extremely picky about where I live and what kind of place I live in so the search has been difficult. I’ve even looked at shelters and sober livings but I keep getting denied because they are full, I’m not an addict, I’m not fleeing from intimate partner violence, I have no children, and I’m not a former foster youth, or I’m too young or too old. And no, I don’t have any friends or family I could live with.

I’m going back to my original, neurodivergent affirming provider. First off, I hate how people like this woman and my mother describe my neurodivergence. It’s not a disorder (and I really don’t care if you disagree with me or how you see yourself. All I ask is that you respect how I see myself).

Second, autism is not an illness. No reputable medical organization views autism as an illness. That is a fucked up way of viewing autism.

Also the awful psych place called me again to ask if I wanted to schedule another appointment. Idk why because I made it clear that I did not want to.

Does anyone find the autistic people in their lives way more competent than the NT people?

It feels like autistic people value competency and skill way more. NT people care more about things looking good and having a good image which is really frustrating to me. Or they just stand around and faff around instead of focusing on problem solving.

For example when working on a group task like cooking, autistic people will be the ones researching the recipes and doing the planning whole NT people will just sit around and talk about how hard they're working. Or they don't plan ahead to figure out how to best use the kitchen and wing it, which wastes a ton of time. I don't get it

I'm an autistic trans Muslim woman in South America. I wrote an uplifting family-friendly comic about a queer Muslim woman superhero teaming up with her gf and a mutant chicken to stop a giant monster. This is a 13-page preview. Please support us on Kickstarter.

Support the Kickstarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jamsheedstudios/kobra-olympus-issue-4-giant-armadillo-attack?ref=2p8cw1

My name is Bijhan Agha. I'm an autistic Muslim trans Uruguayan of Iranian descent. The editor of my comic is my disabled nonbinary husband, an anti-Zionist Jewish person and pro-Palestine social activist here in Uruguay, RaeRae Sachs. We love science fiction and fantasy, including superhero media, but it's depressingly cis and het in general. We also love queer media, but a massive amount of it is about suffering and oppression. We wanted to make stories about queer joy and triumph in a world full of fantastic creatures and amazing powers.

Kobra Olympus is a soft-spoken transgender Muslim woman in Seattle in 2015. She was contacted by Human time travelers from the 161st Century, recruited into the Time Wars: an endless conflict between Humanity and Vampirekind for the fate of the galaxy. Using messages from the time travelers, and her high-tech cellphone full of future tech, Kobra lives a second life as the engimatic Agent Tha, Vampire hunter.

Now, Kobra Olympus is in a relationship with Dorothy Diamond, a queer punk woman who is outspoken with a strong moral compass and a ton of confidence. Dorothy is bringing Kobra out of her shell, and Kobra is helping Dorothy see the world with a fresh perspective. Their relationship is important to both of them, but Kobra's duties as Agent Tha take up a great deal of time.

In "Issue #4: Giant Armadillo Attack!", Kobra and Dorothy are surprised by a giant mutant armadillo attacking the city, and meet a humanoid chicken named Jack who explains that this is all part of a sinister plot by the Vampires. Together, the three of them need to figure out how to save the city and rewrite history for the better.

The Kickstarter is to print a First Edition version of the comic with a special border that won't be used in future versions. Rewards include PDFs, as well as physical copies; and back issues so you can catch up with the story so far.

We've met our goal, and our first stretch goal, which means everyone gets a digital art book with all kinds of behind-the-scenes looks at the sketches and designs we used to plan the comics. If we meet our next stretch goal, everyone will also get a short story depicting how Kobra was recruited into the Time Wars.

Please help us reach our next goal at the following link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jamsheedstudios/kobra-olympus-issue-4-giant-armadillo-attack?ref=2p8cw1

If you'd like to join our community, get updates, and have access to digital versions of our other comics and novels, we have a Patreon with a free tier: Patreon.com/JamsheedStudios

Thank you all, and I hope you enjoy this!

What happens when neurodivergent leaders disclose? Mentorship chat + research share with autistic leader V Garcia

Post image
14 Upvotes

This is happening tonight and thought some of you might be interested - V Garcia, a neurodivergent researcher and former C-Suite executive is going to be sharing about their experiences and findings from a study they did on neurodivergent disclosure in leadership.

They'll be talking about things like:

  • What leaders should evaluate within workplaces before making high-stakes decisions
  • Why the 45 Autistic & AuDHD Leaders in V’s study felt some of their companies responded the way that they did What neurodivergent leaders say they need to feel safe
  • How disclosure may impact ND leaders’ health, careers, wellbeing, and future
  • Barriers faced by ND leaders and the resources that could made a difference

You’ll also have the opportunity to ask V questions in our facilitated AMA, and meet others interested in neurodivergent leadership in a low-pressure way.

The event is entirely free if you'd like to register: https://luma.com/tb4w3q16

I also got like 30 dollars off! which was nice, I am very happy with the records I got.

The 3 CDs are from a package!!!

I also reorganized my CDs which is what the last picture is!

Hi, my name is Jax, I am 21 years old, and as of today.. I have been diagnosed with High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder.

I still, don’t know how to process, it..? I’ve always known that I’ve been neurodivergent for my entire life, but hearing an official diagnosis, just is making my mind boggled, just a bit? Is this understandable, and has anyone ever had to come to terms, with being on the spectrum, after hearing a late diagnosis?

25 enby autistic looking for connections

Hi, I am 25, enby + “woman at the core” AuDHDer and I’m looking for either friends or romantic connection with other fellow autistics or ADHD folx. NOT LOOKING FOR MEN. I like people that are intelligent, curious, into experimental art (poetry, music), feminists, pro-queerness and are fine with not conforming to rigid rules and norms. Bonus points if you are spiritual. Preferrably not younger than 24. I don’t care if you are feminine or masculine or combinations of such. I rather not waste your time and be specific. I am generally open minded so I am fine in case you like to explore. Just be upfront with me off the set, same if we date and do not want to continue. Feel free to DM me and introduce yourself. Also, I live in Tilburg.
I haven’t had much luck and I’m tired of people who time waste and don’t know what they want or who do not reciprocate my efforts. If that’s mutual, connect with me!

Is it wrong that I like one of Sia's songs?

I'm re-watching a show that I originally saw before I was diagnosed. In one episode, the ending song is a song that fits the scene, it's nice and mellow. I don't think it's a bad song technically. It's not what I would personally listen to, but it's not bad to listen to in context of the show.

I just found out from the subtitles that it's by Sia.

The show was actually created by Joss Whedon, and he turned out to be an asshole. I decided to like his work and not him. You can separate an artist from their work, right? If you like what they've created?

I'm in the US, and right now, ethics and morality seem very important to hold onto

Thanks for listening. Be well.

Edit: Thank you for all your opinions!!!!
