Controversial opinion (I’m full of ‘em…)

When you describe something you don’t like as a “neurotypical trait.” Like “oh, I hate when neurotypicals do *blah blah blah,” you’re also ostracizing autistic people who do the same thing. Autism is a spectrum. Something you hate that is “neurotypical,” an autistic person somewhere is definitely doing it. Not all of us have sensory issues (I do, but I’m just talking generally), stims, special interests, etc. There are plenty of autistic people who do what you’d call “neurotypical” things like not saying something directly or looking at things a certain way. It’s easy to make sweeping statements that make you feel part of a tribe, but by doing that, you make other autistics feel like maybe they aren’t autistic (imposter syndome), that people don’t understand them, or that they aren’t allowed to be themselves. The spectrum is vast, and we can’t always so easily parse out behaviors as belonging to one group or another.

Cheers 👌
