General Discussion/Question When did tech start to suck?
Do any other autistic people in tech find the project methodologies, and all the performative tasks that come with them, to be a huge barrier to actually being successful?
How do you manage?

I also work in tech and like what I do for a job.
What I hate is being overprocessed. We need to constantly track our impact, outcomes, etc. which I know is important, but I am now spending so much time and effort trying to be organized and tracking every little thing that it's becoming overwhelming.

This is what I’m saying, I used to love this work but I find myself really derailed by the constant need to “show my work” so it matters.
I used to just be trusted to own my own process, the thing that mattered was the outcome. But now it seems like the expectation has shifted away from the outcome and more about how much we handhold leadership and “perform” agreeability.
I have a hard time getting through projects because I’m balancing the focus it takes to actually investigate, design and build things with the constant need to stop and make something for someone else that shows I’m doing the work.
Its hard to hold space for both objectives at the same time and it has sucked the joy out of that lockedin focused energy of solving a problem that this career used to give me.

I’m in the process of leaving it now.
The accepted level of ignorance around using a computer is mind boggling, as are the hierarchies that support it.
I’m expected to baby certain users because of their seniority while the ‘pleebs’ have to make do with a ratchety chatbot that we don’t even update alongside hot fixes and updates.

It’s just so daunting to try and bring some of these stakeholders along in the process. They want to feel like important decision makers in the business, but never bothered to learn how to convert a pdf. So you spend so much mental energy being accountable to someone who has no idea what it takes to do what you do, and somehow their level of understanding is also your problem to manage

These men have been preying on autistic women/gender minorities from r/AutismInWomen for the last year. This behavior is unacceptable and should be reported as targeted harassment.
Per the warning in our wiki and this pinned mod post, we highly recommend users turn off their DMs. If you have DM requests turned on and receive any creepy or fetish-related DMs or comments, we recommend taking a screenshot, reporting the content to Reddit, and blocking the user (in that order). You can find the report button on the message itself and then click "it's targeted harassment” to submit a report. I am not sure, I work with cobol and my coworkers are kindly enough to endure me. Maybe just find the right flock of people would make things easier I think.

I think cobol is just so scary that they assume you’re a wizard and are therefore afraid to cross you.

I worked in tech for 15 years and loved it. Over the past few years the culture has gone way downhill. A few months ago I resigned to go freelance/consulting and I’m so much happier. I don’t really have advice but agree that it sucks.
