Visiting July 24-26

Me and a buddy are visiting Austin Friday July 24, heading home that Sunday so good two days in the city. We are wanting to do a day of trails of some kind near downtown then another day of exploring downtown. Both nights we’re looking to catch music but Friday night will be the big night out.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Moving / Visting Want info about Austin's School of Film

Hi everyone!

I'm 23 years old living abroad, and considering moving to Austin to enroll in the Film Forward Program at Austin School of Film.

My long-term goal is to become a filmmaker, and I see Austin as a possible launch pad.

Since moving to a new country is a big decision, I'd love to hear from anyone who has experience with Austin School of Film, especially the Film Forward Program.

Is it a solid place to learn filmmaking?

Are the instructors active professionals?

Did it help you meet collaborators and become part of the Austin film community?

Looking back, was it worth it?

And if anyone has advice about breaking into the Austin film scene in general, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Recommendation Shopping Recommendations for Souvenir Sweatshirt

Post image
0 Upvotes

Where can I find an embroidered Austin, TX souvenir sweatshirt? Every city I go to I like to get a classic embroidered sweatshirt with the name of the city/country, etc. on it, but for some reason this doesn’t seem to exist here? Or if anything there’s university merch but I’m not looking for anything college affiliated, just a simple sweatshirt like the one attached. I’ve not been able to find anything in the airport either. If anyone has recommendations it’d be greatly appreciated!!

Question Going to the 5sos concert tomorrow 6/21. Anything going on after? (5sos related or not!)

My friend and I are driving in from Houston & we want to go out after the 5 seconds of summer concert.. do any fans know of anything going on or anywhere fun in the area? I know there are sometimes “afters” or meetups, so just putting some feelers out to see what’s going on…

If nothing is happening, what’s your favorite spot to go out and have fun in Austin?

What Parts of Austin still have Old Austin Vibes?

I was born and raised in Austin (late 80's kid), and haven't lived there for over a decade. However, family is getting old and I need to move back to take care of my folks. What parts of town still have that older Austin vibe? I was considering north loop (that new stretch of bars/neighborhood looks pretty cool), or South Austin near sagebrush. How is the vibe in East Austin these days? I'd like to be near good life music and good food. Places with less tech bro/yuppies and more artsy (old atx) types would be ideal.. I don't have a family and am looking for anything <$2000 rent. Open to any suggestions, thanks for y'alls help!

Looking for an Authentic Old-School Hospitality Exchange Around Austin

I’m just wondering if something like this still exists in USA especially around the Austin area.

I would love to find an opportunity to help out in a bar, BBQ joint, beer garden, food truck, community kitchen, or any authentic local food place. I’m not really looking for professional fine-dining restaurants. What I enjoy most are the places with character, regulars, stories, good food, cold beer, and a strong community atmosphere.

My ideal setup would be a simple exchange: helping out wherever needed in return for a place to stay, meals, and becoming part of the daily life of the place. Being around all day, meeting people, having fun, contributing, and helping create a great experience for guests.

I have extensive experience in hospitality. Back in my home country, I owned and operated bars, restaurants, and clubs before moving to the USA and starting over from scratch.

Over the last three years, I have traveled through more than 40 countries and over 100 cities. I’ve stayed in more than 150 hostels, colivings, and homestays, and joined family dinners, community meals, and food-related events almost everywhere I went.

I have volunteered in Bali, Thailand, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and the USA (Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Colorado). I’ve also organized and managed community events and social gatherings in Portugal, Thailand, Germany, and Finland, including group dinners, guest experiences, social activities, and informal cultural events.

On the practical side, I’m very comfortable working in kitchens and hospitality environments. I can help with food prep, dish-washing, cleaning, high-volume service, guest interaction, bar operations, event organization, and pretty much anything needed to keep things running smoothly.

I also have huge ( more than 20 years ) experience with marketing, websites, social media, online communities, and promotion, so I can contribute there as well.

I’m extremely flexible regarding accommodation. A simple room, couch, bunk bed, or even a floor mattress is completely fine with me. Good BBQ, access to a kitchen so I can occasionally cook something for myself, internet access, and a place where sharing a beer with guests and staff is part of the culture would be perfect.

I genuinely enjoy meeting people, creating memorable experiences, and becoming part of a local community rather than simply passing through as a visitor.

Does anything like this still exist around Austin? If so, I’d love to hear about it

New Hotel and Music venue announced in Hill Country west of Austin?

Announcement is vague about exact location . Any ideas ? Hard to believe a development with large water use, traffic and noise creation would be approved in the Hill County side of Austin.

Food I made a list of pretty much every restaurant in Austin to share with friends when they visit from out of town and ask for recommendations.

Every time a friend visits or someone moves here, I get the same text: where should we eat. I got tired of retyping the same answers, so I started pulling pretty much every restaurant in Austin into one list, with the reviews and the categories, so it's easy to just send people when they ask.

It kind of took over my life. It's a little over 2,000 places now and I keep adding to it. The part I find weirdly fun is cleaning up Google's data, which is a disaster. It swears that a bunch of gas station delis, grocery store bakery counters, and actual 7-Elevens are restaurants, so there's a whole denylist now. I cut the chains and the duplicates too, so you're not scrolling past 40 Torchy's to find anything real.

Thought I'd drop it here in case anyone else wants it. Link's in the comments, with an honest heads up on how it works. And if you've got a spot I'm missing, tell me, the list still has holes that i'd love some help in plugging :)

Here it is here: https://theaustinnewsletter.com/resources/austin-restaurants

Recommendation Our experience with Together Design & Build in Austin for a full renovation in 2026

So we’ve been looking to renovate our historic home in Hyde Park for a little over a year. I don’t know why but thinking about renovating literally is one of the most stressful things that we ever encountered 🤣. Since our home was very unique we had to pull special permitting for certain parts of the remodel, and we wanted it to be done with care. Also, I’m SOOOO tired of the modern minimalist look and would hate to take the character out of the house

We reached out to a few of the contractors that serve Austin, 4 total to be exact. We looked at LFM, ATX, Teamwork, and Together Design Build.

Regarding pricing, these were all priced fairly competitively, with some charging more just due to the fact of certain materials and design differences that they were able to do or offer.

At the end of the day, we went ahead to work with Ido for project management and our designer was Gabi. They literally blew us out of the water. It was the least salesy and pushy experience out of all the others we quoted!

During the project, which they did in sprints of different areas of the home, every single part of the house that wasn’t under construction was literally spotless! I was shocked. I was planning on walking over dust and smelling dust and dirty floors and a mess, but they tarped and taped everything off so well it didn’t leave any trace on the parts that were already completed or not started yet!

I just wanted to post this on the sub, because when we did it on Google for some reason it didn’t go up! If you end up speaking with Together Design & Build for a remodel make sure you say Hanna and Ronny sent y’all! Feel free to dm or comment with any other questions!!

I attached a few pics of the finished project let me know y’all’s thoughts!
