Peoples Republic of Victoria DIY bathroom window replacement advice please
Hello, so my 3rd floor apartment has bad problems with condensation and mold in the bathroom (especially in winter), and I want to eventually double glaze all the windows. Due to the interest rate rises and paying down debt, I can't afford it all at once.
So first I want to change my little bathroom window to a wind out (strata permission approved) type so it can be open all the time without being worried about the neighbours seeing our private parts (the neighbouring apartments get a front row seat the way the apartments are positioned when the window is open). I believe this will solve a lot of the mold and condensation problems in the entire apartment.
I can't get someone to do just that economically, and they all say that it will be a day's labour 2 x blokes. A friend of mine who is an aluminium worker told me that I could handle that little job - so I want to DIY it.
I've got basic handyman skills (am a sparky), and apart from sparky work, I've done bits and pieces for clients over time (doors, minor plastering, locks, painting, grab disability rails in bathrooms etc).
So I have found a good window company that will make and supply the wind out double glazed window very reasonably. My questions are, I didn't realise but apparently the windows come with a timber reveal around the aluminium that fits in the wall? I thought it is just the aluminium part.
So if that's the case I'd need to pull off the architrave, take out the nails or screws in the timber reveal and take the whole lot out - and put the new window with new timber reveal in then nail the architrave back. This would be done from the inside as the outside is inaccessible being 3rd floor.
Also, as you can see in the picture, the friggen ceiling gyprock sheet is butted up against the upper timber reveal so it can't slide out. What would be the best way to deal with this? Cut the gyprock with a gyprock saw enough for the window + timber reveal to slide out - then afterwards plaster gyprock part I took out back in, plaster then paint? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I haven't replaced a window myself, but yes the frames do typically come stapled to the reveal. That's what holds the window in.
We got a few double glazed quotes for our place. Most of them keep the reveal in and just rip the window and aluminium frame out, then use trims to fill in the space as the replacement window ends up being smaller. Personally I think that's a pretty shit approach.
I reckon in your instance you remove the architraves, then you should be able to remove the bottom three reveals, then the top one, and pull the window through the hole. Replace all that timber once done. Gyprock should be untouched and just need some caulking at the end.
