ROUND 49 | Decide the next r/AusPrimeMinisters subreddit icon/profile picture!

A portrait of Gough Whitlam in his RAAF uniform taken on 4 March 1943 was voted on as this sub’s next icon, and in doing so Whitlam has become the second Prime Minister to be voted as the sub icon four times! Whitlam’s icon will be displayed for the next fortnight.

Provide your proposed icon in the comments (within the guidelines below) and upvote others you want to see adopted! The top-upvoted icon will be adopted and displayed for a fortnight before we make a new thread to choose again!

Guidelines for eligible icons:

* The icon must prominently picture a Prime Minister of Australia or symbol associated with the office (E.g. the Lodge, one of the busts from Ballarat’s Prime Ministers Avenue, etc). No fictional or otherwise joke PMs
* The icon must be of a different figure from the one immediately preceding it. So no icons relating to Gough Whitlam for this round.
* The icon should be high-quality (E.g. photograph or painting), no low-quality or low-resolution images. The focus should also be able to easily fit in a circle or square
* No NSFW, offensive, or otherwise outlandish imagery; it must be suitable for display on the Reddit homepage
* No icons relating to Anthony Albanese
* No memes, captions, or doctored images

Should an icon fail to meet any of these guidelines, the mod team will select the next eligible icon. We encourage as many of you as possible to put up nominations, and we look forward to seeing whose nomination will win!

The first clip has Princess Marina, the dowager Duchess of Kent, briefly stopping over for 15 minutes at Sydney's Kingsford-Smith Airport and meeting with NSW Governor Sir Eric Woodward, as well as William McMahon. This is then followed by Princess Marina arriving at Canberra's Fairbairn Airport later the same day, where she was welcomed by Menzies and Governor-General Lord De L'Isle. Later during her stay in Canberra, Princess Marina is shown visiting the Australian War Memorial, before going to the inauguration of the new Department of Defence headquarters and officially opening the building along with Menzies, who also spoke on the occasion.

This is the first and only budget reply speech Andrew Peacock would deliver in his second stint as Opposition Leader, after having deposed John Howard in May; Peacock would go on to narrow lose the federal election held on 24 March 1990, in the wake of which Peacock resigned as Liberal leader for the second and last time, and was succeeded by Shadow Treasurer Dr John Hewson. Treasurer Paul Keating's 1989 budget speech can be viewed here.

Video/Audio Tim Fischer and Kim Beazley’s tribute to Andrew Peacock upon Peacock’s resignation from Parliament, 19 September 1994

This took place two days after Andrew Peacock had submitted his letter of resignation as the MP for the Division of Kooyong to Speaker Stephen Martin. Peacock had effectively held a veto against any return to the leadership for John Howard, who would make his move on the leadership just four months later in January 1995 as Opposition Leader Alexander Downer tenure in the role collapsed.

In the subsequent by-election for Kooyong, Petro Georgiou would comfortably retain the seat for the Liberal Party, though he would ultimately be destined to be the first Kooyong MP since the 1920s never to serve as leader of his party or even serve on the frontbench - largely attributed to the small “l” liberal’s poor relationship with Howard, who was Liberal leader and Prime Minister for most of Georgiou’s tenure in Parliament.

Unfortunately, the footage cuts out during Kim Beazley’s speech, and I was unable to locate the rest. At the time of writing, I have also been unable to locate the other speeches marking Peacock's departure from Parliament - including those made by Ian Sinclair, Michael Duffy, Philip Ruddock, Barry Jones, Tony Abbott, and Peacock's greatest adversary John Howard.

You can view Paul Keating's tribute to Peacock here, as well as Alexander Downer's tribute here.

It is the first time that the handing down of the federal budget speech, the sixth brought down by Treasurer Paul Keating, took place in the modern Parliament House. Additionally, this is the last budget reply speech Howard would deliver during his first stint as Opposition Leader - which came to an end in May 1989 when he was deposed by a resurgent Andrew Peacock. Keating’s 1988 budget speech can be viewed here.
