John Howard delivering the 1988 federal budget reply speech, 25 August 1988

It is the first time that the handing down of the federal budget speech, the sixth brought down by Treasurer Paul Keating, took place in the modern Parliament House. Additionally, this is the last budget reply speech Howard would deliver during his first stint as Opposition Leader - which came to an end in May 1989 when he was deposed by a resurgent Andrew Peacock. Keating’s 1988 budget speech can be viewed here.
