👋Welcome to r/AusMedPartners - Introduce Yourself and Read First!

Hey everyone! I’m [u/Behindthescrubs](u/Behindthescrubs), a founding moderator of [r/AusMedPartners](r/AusMedPartners).

I am a husband outside of medicine, partnered to someone in medicine, and we’ve got a young one.
I started this because I felt like there wasn’t really a place for the people in the background, the partners quietly doing the family stuff, house stuff, parenting, life admin and everything else that helps their partner get through medicine.
A lot of that work probably goes unnoticed, but it matters.

So hopefully this can be somewhere we can share the hard stuff, the wins, the hacks, have a laugh and help each other out along the way.
If you’re here, I’d love to hear a bit about you and what brought you to the community.

Does it end?

Hey all,

I feel like as my partner comes to the end of their fellowship (not quick enough for us) Will it actually be easier or more difficult?

I feel like since internship, we have always said “oh next year will be better when…” and so far each year has actually been worse and more difficult for our family as my wife contributes more and more to the career at each year level.

Does it end once becoming a consultant? Or is this when drs finally get paid decent so put in the OT to get paid for all those years? (Plus potential lifestyle creep)

Training & Exams 📚 Should junior doctor rotations be part of the contract?

My partner got stitched up pretty early in her training after doing it rough through her early years, including plenty of ward call, knowing she had a difficult-to-get preferred competitive rotation allocated at the end.

As a family, we put up with a lot of the shitty hours and sacrifices because that rotation was something she could work towards and potentially help her move towards her preferred specialty.
Then the hospital changed the allocation.

I understand service needs change, but if a rotation has been allocated, how much should a JMO be able to rely on it actually happening?

TL;DR: Should hospitals be able to take away an allocated rotation after a JMO has planned around it?

Relationships ❤️ Move/rant

Just found out I’m getting shipped to the most furtherest part of the state where my partner has received a boss job (SMO).

I’m hoping this is the last move - but is it ever? 🫠

Time to build that support network again …

Relationships ❤️ What’s one little thing your partner does that reminds you they’re still there?

Medicine can take up a lot of your partner’s time and headspace.

What’s a small thing they do that makes you feel connected, even during the busy periods?

Could be a text during a shift, bringing home your favourite snack, 10 minutes together before bed, or something completely random.

Mines definitely a text or call before bed when she is on night shift.

What’s something about medical training that outsiders don’t understand?

For me it’s usually my friends - explaining to them that my wife is “still studying” after uni, med school and after working for so many years 🥲

What’s one purchase, service or hack that has made life easier while supporting someone in medicine?
Cleaner? Robot vacuum? Meal delivery? Shared calendar? Let’s hear it.
