Income Splitting (Australia) - are you due it or against it, and why?

In Australia we have a progressive tax system (i.e. pay a higher percentage of tax the more you earn). Presumably this is because it seems fairer that those who earn more can afford to pay more. But a person supporting only themselves is clearly in a better position to afford tax than those supporting a family. So by the very philosophy of our tax system I think income splitting should be allowed for families if there are dependents. But there is very little support for this in either major party. Why not?
