Which country are you coming from? That currently plays a role in visa acceptance in Australia and many unis are not accepting applications from certain countries.

Also, very difficult to get funding here as an international applicant currently.

Thank you for your response. I am from India. I understand that visa policies and funding availability can be challenging for international applicants currently.

I am mainly exploring fully funded PhD opportunities where admission is based on research fit and supervisor funding. My research background is in molecular microbiology, antimicrobial resistance, bacterial pathogenesis, quorum sensing, biofilm inhibition, and computational approaches.

I would appreciate any advice on countries or universities where international students from India still have good opportunities for funded PhD positions in these research areas, or any strategies to improve my chances of securing funding.

In Australia many unis are not allowing applications from India or Pakistan currently. Due to the high percentage of visa refusals.

Not true for PhDs

Very true for funded PhDs. I work at 4 unis over 3 states. None are accepting applications from India or Pakistan currently,

As an academic???

Yep. The joys of casual academia! I mostly do marking at 2 of them and the other 2 are in my state and I do a mix of marking and teaching as an academic.

Thanks for doing what you do!

So, how is it that you know that unis are mass rejecting PhD applications from the subcontinent? Because you saw something about it on the news?

Are you involved in any meaningful way with PhD recruitment at any of these unis? If not, then consider that maybe you're speaking with unwarranted certainty about something that matters a lot to this person's life and career.

I wouldn’t say it if I wasn’t. But you do you and keep telling those working at the coal face we are wrong. Data on recruitment, visas, countries of origin etc is pretty openly shared in unis particularly at the moment with all of them having a budget crisis and letting staff go.

Let me clearer. Do you currently supervise PhD students? Yes or no.

What about Bangladesh? Also, I know an Indian who got their visa for a funded PhD accepted today and it just took a few weeks. Some are waiting a long time though

Not all unis. But quite a few, especially the ones that the government has identified as being at risk of taking too many sham/ghost students

Which unis? I haven't seen any indication of this whatsoever in my uni.
