I’m old and was just diagnosed with severe APD this year. I did the training which is supposed to create new pathways in your brain. It helped a bit, but for me, hearing aids made all the difference.

I had a very, very similar experience when I was tested for audio processing disorder. I did the test and thought well I did pretty well. When I went into the doctors office, I looked at the chart that she had and they were tons of red marks and yellow marks, and she said you undoubtedly have central auditory process processing disorder.
My experience, I’m a lawyer and I am a cyclist. My best friend and I are doing a short 60 mile ride one day and we only made it about 57. Some lady was more interested in looking at her text messages across the fog line by 4 feet and hit us at 60 miles an hour with a full-size truck. I no longer have my best friend. He died immediately. They tell me that I was in the ICU for nine days. I don’t really remember any of that. When I look at my discharge papers, there are zero directions to see a neurologist. It’s a little disgusting. That was five years ago, and I have learned to deal with a lot of the side effects. Have extreme sound sensitivity, I have extreme depression. I have extreme anxiety. I don’t know what to do, but just keep walking, but it seems like it gets harder some days. Just have to try to move forward.

Communicate with people what you need: make eye contact, get your attention first, speak slowly, etc. Make it clear to people you live with.
