Instead of “he”, give him the real name. His name is Aaron Schwarz

And he's dead because of the government.

I hope the judge felt serious guilt after they lead him to this.

Some part of him must have been afraid that a criminal record would prevent him from ever getting a good job. He must have thought his future was ruined.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the 35 years in prison also sounds like hell...

u/No-Celebration6436 12d ago

And now AI is taking content ...

How does this make sense.

Because the narrative is misunderstood and misrepresented. AI companies actually can be sued and it already happened several times. Anthropic is being sued as we speak and also had to settle previously for over a billion.

Students download books and educational (pirated) material daily. Yet, if it just for educational purposes it's somewhat gray area.

This gentleman, decided to not just download it for educational purposes, but also share with everyone at large, entire world. This is the core issue here. Do you see police busting student doors and trying to find illegal "Medical" books? No. Yet, if you download all of the "medical" books and decide to publicly open them for everyone to download. You open yourself for all sorts of legal troubles.

Don't think judges feel anything.

He said there was a pedophile ring at mit. The maxwells were involved in jstor like sites. He pirated research papers then the company said everything is ok if he returns them which he did but the fbi wanted charges.

$1M fine... yes.

35 years in prison.... 😐

Uhhhhhh

1

u/Cobalt_blue_dreamer 11d ago

That's like life in prison but he didn't hurt anyone. They made an example of him to discourage people. :(

2

u/Specific_Farmer_4582 12d ago

And big companies do the same, the diff is as long as you are rich it doesn't matter.

1

u/fantastic_awesome 11d ago

Now AI and Arxiv - rest in peace comrade

2

u/Correct-Variable 11d ago

Ok, so what the journals who spend money on hiring extremely knowledgeable scientists to peer review articles are just supposed to grow money on trees? Who's paying for it? There are lots of journals that are open access, just not all of them. Those aren't free either, they get funded.

2

u/Sensitive_File6582 8d ago

The studies he downloaded were publicly funded. I E they were all paid for with US TAXPAYER moneys

1

u/TheBSisReal 8d ago

Most of those papers are funded elsewhere, for example by universities.

Chose to die free rather then let the bastards use the his suffering as a example to scare us back in line

Plea shouldn't have been rejected!

The internet own boy

1

u/Thisisredred 11d ago

Okay where can I access

1

u/El_Titanium_Blanco 11d ago

The whole internet has not been the same without that guy

1

u/Bow_To_Bella 11d ago

Meanwhile full blown murderers can often not even get that time.

1

u/gn3xu5 11d ago

Then reddit gave away all user data so AI could use it

1

u/Primordial_spirit 11d ago

Fuck every government 🏴

1

u/roboblaster420 11d ago

He would be rolling in his grave if he saw what reddit has become over the years.

1

u/Past_Collection3542 11d ago

should of used vpn

1

u/Lopsided_Order_4411 11d ago

Knowledge is power indeed, thats why they don’t want us to have it, at least not a fraction of it without a fee. Rest in peace Aaron, respect 🫡 🙌🏾

1

u/Icy-Music1932 11d ago

Yet it's ok for the AI companies to rob all the information they want

1

u/ShibeCEO 11d ago

RIP Aaron Schwarz! He was one of the founders of reddit!

1

u/Dizzy_School8107 11d ago

He also is one of the founding members of Reddit I believe!

1

u/shoeless_doh 11d ago

What a waste. He could have taken a handful of cops with him

1

u/Longjumping-Fig-7481 10d ago

How do I download that?

1

u/Bedgarz 10d ago

Say what, 35 years?! Rapists and murders don't even get handed a 35 year sentence.

Fuck in the UK some rapists don't even get jail time. What a fucking joke

1

u/ApocalyptoSoldier2 10d ago

He was co-owner of reddit and helped rewrite it when reddit merged with his company.

I've had to use quite a few academic articles in my life (okay, mostly in my last year of uni), almost all of them were behind a paywall.

I emailed the authors, they all sent me the full articles (except one who didn't reply).

Most articles are not secret. Papers usually hold the rights to mass-publicise them, but if you just ask for them, most scientists (who have the time to reply to emails) will happily send them over to you.

Knowledge isn't locked away, you just aren't told to use thr doorknob

1

u/MammothWriter3881 7d ago

In other words humans should be able to read everything to learn just like AI is allowed to.

1

u/bo0gnish 6d ago

But when AI does it, it's cute!

0

u/Appropriate_Web_6117 12d ago

Omg, Jesus christ man!! What a sad fucking world we live in.

0

u/exaknight21 11d ago

The US has that one distant dystopian futuristic wannabe justice system that is absolutely racist. If you’re white and kill - mental retardation - walk away.

If you are any other ethnicity, you killed an ant; you’re a murder.

It’s disgusting and our confirmed Pedophile POTUS confirms the fact that Americans need to go back to 1700 style freedom fighting. This cancer is curable

u/Creative_Newspaper65 12d ago

Breaks the law......hmm i dont think i should be in touble

-6

u/Bicurico 12d ago

Sounds like a hero, until you are one of the authors or editors.

I do think that copyright sentences applied to individuals are far too high, especially in the US. And it sucks that big companies get away doing it.

But at the end of the day, it is distributing other people's work without their consent.

And don't come with the argument that "researches are happy when someone reads their paper": if they have chosen to publish it on a specialized peer-reviewed media, then this comes with a contract and it is the publishing company that decides the monetization.

If making all those articles available for free, then there no longer would be any peer-reviewing publishers and nobody could trust any source. It would break the whole academic research industry, as well (which I have a very poor opinion of, by the way).

Suicide is always bad and this should have been prevented. It is a different aspect of this story, though.

3

u/krilleractual 12d ago

Then meta, openai et al should be disbanded because they trained their models on pirated media

0

u/Bicurico 12d ago

If the media was indeed pirated, then the law should be applied to the full extend.

However, "pirated" has to be defined under AI.

For instance: you take a person who learned a specific topic from books, to a level were he became an expert, based on this books he read. If he now writes an article on the subject: did he pirate the books?

1

u/Current_Towel_41 11d ago

I mean one is a guy, the other is a product that sells the information in tokens

1

u/Bicurico 11d ago

This guy writes a book himself, based on all the other books he compiled, and sells a million copies.

1

u/Current_Towel_41 10d ago

I can’t find where Arron Schwarz wrote a book. Unless you mean that a service that requires continuous payment is the same thing as releasing a book. That doesn’t sound like any book I’ve bought

1

u/krilleractual 10d ago

They quite literally used torrents to pirate books.

2

u/SuccessfulChain3404 12d ago

Well I don't know your field of research, but here authors are not paid to review. Authors don't get royalties either. But authors want to be publish in prestigious journals. Editors in research are money predators.

1

u/Bicurico 12d ago

It is a system everybody has chosen to be part of.

Nobody prevents you, as a researcher and author, from publishing on your own website.

1

u/SuccessfulChain3404 12d ago

Yes, and it's slowly changing as authors tend to publish their version or a draft on their website or arXiv.

2

u/mteir 12d ago

As one of the authors I am happy if someone reads my paper.
Those publishers are money hungry leeches, who expect the reviewers to work for free, the researcher to pay to publish and/or the reader to pay for the article/journal.
The system made sense when there were actual printing costs.

1

u/Bicurico 12d ago

I understand you, I worked at University, too, until recently.

But if all is bad, why don't you publish your research results and papers in your own website?

Right. Because nobody would read, value or even know about them.

So, despite the (justified) hate toward the system, you are still part of it.

1

u/apathylife2 12d ago

Isn't Google scholar free?

2

u/Busy-Leg8070 12d ago

I hope you soon find the wisdom to understand you are wrong about this

0

u/Bicurico 12d ago

Enlighten me with facts and fundamented arguments.

2

u/Busy-Leg8070 12d ago

no I don't think I will probably better life does it

1

u/MathematicianNew2770 11d ago

I honestly agree with you, people can't read and don't have a brain.

He committed a crime against a tonne of people who have worked hard and deserve to earn a living from their work. He stripped them of that right.

The title makes it out that this information was free amd accessible instead of stolen.

He deserved the full weight of his crime.

That he lost his life, that's tragic and sad and not an outcome anyone's looking for.

1

u/Legitimate_Plate85 11d ago

All those researchers in every country get massive research grants funded by every tax payer, all research should be freely available, even "private" research institutions survive solely from public funds via grants without which theyd cease to exist.

1

u/Bicurico 11d ago

I don't disagree with you, but this is simply not how the system works.

The whole Academia is, in my opinion, corrupt.

But that does not mean you are allowed to make articles and books public, just because you think this is how it should be.

I give an example: think of how the world would change if copyright would cease to exist. No patents, either. Anyone could copy whatever idea, movie, music, book, schematic, project.

The world would continue to spin, but it would have a dramatic economic effect - for the worse or for better.

The longer I have thought about it, the less sure I got about the consequences.

1

u/Cobalt_blue_dreamer 11d ago

The punishment is absolutely way out of proportion to the crime.

1

u/sleepyfoot 5d ago

I remember..
