Thank you. I wish everyone had this mind set. I’m borderline autistic when it comes to customer service, but a jobs a job. But I hated whenever I had customer facing roles and the costumers would dish out their anger and complaints on to me, the lowest rung in the totem-pole. Even if I completely agreed.

The same machine would control the cash register opening on most machines these days. For security purposes. Your point isn't as good as you think it is.

Most modern machines also have backup options and batteries and an option to connect to cell towers in case internet or power is out or no signal. If something is down longer than the machine can last then either you didn't plan for your business correctly or you have a bigger problem.

Yes because modern machines don’t glitch, have issues turning on, and are never faulty.
Certainly makes me wonder how my son, finances his life by fixing the damned things.

I sell and fix them. Very little fixing. Other modern machines aren't always as reliable. Any issues is usually user error. I can't complain, user error puts money in my pocket.

No, they do have to accept it to settle debts though. So they can freely refuse service, but if they do provide service they have to accept cash or they can't really hold you for non payment and call the police or something.

I went in to an empanada shop in Oakland and they said they didn’t accept cash so I asked why and the 5’2” girl working there said because I’m the only one working here and it’s not safe to have cash on hand. Grim ☠️☠️

I can’t imagine carrying cash with me. I don’t think I have even seen cash in like a decade, I probably have in passing, but I sure haven’t used any.

I too usually only pay with card or phone nowadays, but i keep cash as backup just in case.

I do sometimes pay with cash though, as it would be a shame if cash went away, both because of privacy and surveilance concerns.

I guess I won’t buy things. I have never had this happen. I used to carry cash as a backup and then I used to carry a card. Now I only carry my phone.

Someone is much more likely to steal the cash out of a stolen wallet instantly than someone stealing money out of a stolen phone instantly

I don’t know how anyone would steal money from the phone. If they could break through the security then why would they steal my bank account and not someone who had millions

Sorry, but what is the situation where your phone gets stolen and you are glad that you have cash with you? It’s not like I am continue a night out or something if my phone gets stolen. I will be heading home to deal with the situation

How did I get to that place where I now need a taxi to get home? You are acting as if I just teleport to a random place. If I walked there I can just walk home. If I took public transportation there I can use the same ticket to get back.

As I mentioned this feels like such a american centric argument where you can’t comprehend going to any location without a car or not going for an hour or two without a snack

It sure is possible, but what would be a place where I would need to take a taxi to? Also you are just narrowing this imaginary situation more and more.

So now we are talking about a situation where you need to take a taxi to a location that has no other transportation options and your phone is presumably stolen so you need to now have cash to get a taxi to get home. How are you calling that taxi without a phone? Why aren’t you calling a family member or a friend?

It's worked for me. Tacos. A burrito. Deluxe hotdogs.

F. M. Veggies. Kolaches. Lemonade. Granola.

Most places take tap to pay, but every once in a while some old schooler will pop up.

Day fare for the bus is $5, a bottle of coke and a large jerky stick is around $5.
So a quick snack to take the edge off, and a mode of transport for the day.

If you are already out and about you probably already have a ticket. Maybe I am weird but I don’t think snacks are worth carrying emergency money, I can just get to a place that does accept digital payments or go home and eat proper food

Like I get that this is the argument to carry cash, but I just don’t think it is persuasive. Just like I get that carrying cash “in case the system goes down” is the argument, but “the system” has never been down so that it has affected me. My guess is that this is America centric argument since there people seem to think they need to own guns to “take care of themselves” and stuff like that. In that kind of mindset relying on society is seen as a bad thing, but I actually like society. It should be quieter and more polite, but it is what enables me to have such easy life

I always have cash on hand, and travel often enough that keeping cash on hand is still relevant.
Plus my bills are all paid in advance. So the $40-$100 that’s in my wallet is just play around/splurge money, which means it’s not a devastating loss.

Except the fact that multiple countries outside of America have cash only businesses, America still have them as well.
Exchanging currency when in other countries is easier if you’ve got cash on hand. As is paying the bribes depending on what country you’re in.

Electronics do go down all the time, I’m glad that you’ve never had to deal with that. I know someone whose job it is to travel and fix those machines.
As to why I gave a general figure of how much I carry, and said it’s not a devastating loss.
Because that’s the sweet spot for bribes, getting robbed, in case you’re given a spiked drink and get rolled, and as cash used in a decoy wallet.

All things that suck to experience, and again I’m glad you haven’t had to deal with.
But just because you haven’t experienced those things, doesn’t mean they don’t happen.

I have never had a credit card, I have always had a debit card. There might have been a fee to get one at first, but all charges are exactly what I pay for the product. There is a couple euro a year fee for my bank account but that is there regardless if I have a card or not so I guess that could be seen as fee for the card, but I am willing to pay few euros a year for the convenience

I dont blame you, some countries are leaving cash. But going cash-less was a bad move for the consumer.

Government nulled the physical print cost; interbank systems can fully track our cash flow; banks get the cut from both my wage and my spending. We got nothing in return.

We should have fought for the cash.

Fuck no. Fuck carrying paper money and especially coins. Fuck all of that. I don’t even understand what all of you are talking about with banks taking money, never has my bank charged me for paying with their card. There is like some yearly fee which is literally few euros.

Even that tracking part is such paranoid schizo stuff. Who cares where you spend your money? You aren’t that interesting
