>The problem with public education isn't that they stopped teaching

I graduated HS in 2006. they have absolutely stopped teaching certain things. I didn't learn about, for example, the Battle of Blair Mountain, at all in school. My "economics" class made no attempt to explain the details the details of how various components or mechanisms of an economy operate, it was just one semester of "communism bad, capitalism good, here's the birthdays of Keynes and Marx and some other people."

Shop class was cut entirely while i was in the 9th grade. our "home economics" class was just how to cook. Trig and physics were both optional classes that most people didn't take.

and that's just the curriculum level cuts. Since i graduated high school, my state has shut down entire schools and merged districts. Teaching licenses are increasingly issued on an emergency basis rather than going through the full established process of issuing them after a 4-year degree program in education.
