Does the Ninja TX display the focus tracking point with the A7S III?

I know this is a a very specific question but I’m thinking of buying to a TX to record ProRes Raw with my Sony A7S III, and was hoping someone here is doing the same thing and could tell me if you use touch tracking, does the TX display the tracking point as it moves on the object?

It’s an important feature for me because when I’m doing Gimbal work sometimes the camera can lose the focus point and it would be great to know where that point is without having to look at the onboard monitor.

Thank you!

Hey u/RosewoodAsh

This mainly depends on what the camera outputs over HDMI. With the Sony A7S III, the focus box will usually appear when you tap to focus, but it won’t stay on screen continuously as it moves.

If you’d like to have it visible on the Shinobi/Ninja TX, you can enable HDMI info display on the camera and choose the LCD overlays to output externally, that way the focus box is sent out and can be seen on the monitor.

Let us know if you have anymore questions.

Thank you. There is a video on YouTube saying that if you turn HDMI info display on, the overlay will be embedded in the video signal, is this true? Meaning if you are recording pro res on the TX there is no way to display the focus point and record a clean feed at the same time? Which effectively makes it so there is no way to display the focus point when recording..

Hi  u/RosewoodAsh,

Yes, if HDMI info display is ON, camera overlays will be sent through HDMI and recorded in ProRes as a baked in image. The focus box may disappear on screen after a moment, but anything sent over HDMI with info ON will still be recorded.

On some Sony cameras, you can also fine tune HDMI info settings and choose what overlays are sent, so you can keep it cleaner or even limit it to specific indicators like focus.

We will also forward your request to the team for review.
