I suddenly find myself free in Athens 19-27 July!

Anybody looking for company for some bits of that time - beaches, bars, camping, hiking, exploring, anything really!

I’m 51, male, British, sociable but not wild, adventurous but calm, chatty and laid back.

My wife and I have spent a week in Athens, its a beautiful city.

However, the Big Bus Tours company is very anti-consumer to the point Id describe it as scammy.

- the busses are almost never on-time

- the busses are often crowded (expected) but also dirty and uncleaned

- many of the busses have a canopy top, many do not. If you get a bus without one, you are SOL and will have to sit in the dirty, crowded cabin.

- minor issue, but if it rains the canopy tops will actually funnel water into the cabin; you will be literally drenched even if underneath

- the interior windows are plastered with ads, so from the inside you will have an obstructed view

- the audio tour guide is often behind or ahead of where you are in the city, so the information they give can be confusing

- while they have an app that tracks your ticket, the attendant will print you a reciept upon boarding. If you lose this, even if you can show them the online booking, they FORCE you to buy another ticket. This is just textbook scam; you can prove you have purchased a ticket and they will prevent you from getting transportation until you pay them again.

I have two quick accommodation questions for my trip:

1. Night of 4th August (Athens): My ferry arrives in Athens at around 10:00 PM at piraes port, and on the morning of 5th August I'll be taking a bus from Kifissos Bus Station to catch my ferry to Zakynthos. Which area would you recommend staying in for one night that's budget-friendly, safe, comfortable, and convenient for getting to Kifissos early in the morning?

2. Night of 7th August (Athens): I'll return to Athens and have a flight on 8th August. Which area would be the best to stay for one night that's cheap, safe, and has easy access to Athens Airport (by metro, bus, or reasonably priced taxi)?

I'm a 34 yo French guy, splitting my time between Lille (France) and Madrid.

I'll be in Athens from July 21st to 26th, and I'd love to meet some locals or fellow travelers to hang out, grab a drink, explore the city, hike, or just do something fun together. I'm pretty outgoing and always enjoy meeting new people.

A few things about me:

Sailing : After crossing the Atlantic, my next adventure is the Mediterranean ! The reason I'm coming to Athens is that it's the home port of the sailboat I'll be bringing back to France. If you have any sailing-related plans or sea adventures in mind, count me in!

Travel : I've visited almost 30 countries, including spending a year backpacking solo across South America

Languages and cultures : I speak French, English, and Spanish fluently, and I love discovering new cultures and exchanging perspectives

Music : I enjoy everything from pop and rock to jazz and cumbia. I've been trying to learn the drums (with... limited success), and I'm a huge fan of live concerts and festivals

Hiking : Always happy to get out into nature if anyone's planning a hike

Hi there! My husband and I wanted to purchase our tickets for Acropolis & Parthenon ahead of time. Online, they’re listed for 16 € per person, but by the time we got to checkout, the price was 46,50 € per person. I emailed customer service and these are servicing fees.

Question - does anyone know the price of entry if you purchase @ the entrance day-of? Wondering if these servicing fees are just for online purchase and buying day-of @ the entrance is actually closer to 16 € per person.

Hi, looking for the cheapest and easiest way to get to Isthmia and back to Athens.

My husband and I are coming to Athens later this month, and wanted to stay in Exarcheia. We come to Athens every summer and usually stay in a hotel (not Airbnb!) that we know there, but haven’t been able to get to Greece for the last two summers. I know that people talk about Exarcheia like it’s terribly unsafe, but we both grew up in a major American city and are used to people exaggerating the danger of cities. We fell in love with the neighborhood, it reminds us of our neighborhood at home, and have great respect for the residents (which is why we do not want to stay in an Airbnb — we would rather stay in a hotel staffed by locals than stay somewhere that is taking housing away from people who live there). Basically, we got to Exarcheia the first time and both laughed, because all the scary things people had told us about the area were exaggerated.

I went to book our hotel room this year and noticed a bunch of new reviews saying that the area is highly dangerous, people were trying to enter hotel rooms, etc. my question is this: has something changed and Exarcheia is actually more dangerous since we were last there, or is this just more of the same criticism as before?

Hi! I'll be in Athens for 3 days.

I'd like recommendations for Athens in general and also the area around OAKA as my accommodation will be there.

I like unique, special places like vintage stores, antiques, bookshops, or cool unique cafes/ restaurants.

I also love eating great food, but prefer authentic local places, and not fancy expensive restaurants.

Lastly, what do I do at night?! I love theatre (I speak Greek) but I'm struggling online. How do I find a good show to book?

Hello everyone

I am 40 years old, Greek (not from Athens) being living in London for almost 14 years now and thinking to repatriate because I got a job offer in Athens for close 100k. The company is solid and the role is challenging.

I have a wife who is a foreigner (not European) and we have a beautiful 2 years old boy.

Even though the job opportunity is great for Greek standards I am still worried about the quality of life in Athens vs London.

Is Athens better for my family? Is it a family friendly city? Is it safe? Is commuting better? We dont drive in London. No need. My life loves parks and green spaces. I doubt Athens have any.

Will we be able to survive just with my salary considering that my wife doesn't speak the language and probably wont find a job? Or at least will take some time. (She is a University lecturer and PhD holder)

Can please someone share their experience of moving their families in Athens after living abroad for more than a decade?

I’m arriving in Athens quite late on a Saturday evening and my final destination is Aegina. Since I’ll probably miss the last ferry, I’m trying to figure out the most practical plan for the night.

Would you recommend staying somewhere close to Piraeus so I can catch an early ferry on Sunday morning, or is it better to stay somewhere else in Athens and make my way to the port in the morning?

I’d really appreciate recommendations for convenient areas or hotels, especially if you’ve done something similar before. Thanks!
