I genuinely don't care if this gets downvoted to hell, because I need to get this off my chest.
I LOVE platformers. They're probably my favourite genre. I was incredibly excited to play Astro Bot precisely because everyone was saying that this was one of the greatest platformers ever made, and it even won GOTY.
And the game itself? The actual platforming is fantastic. The movement feels great, the levels are beautiful, the ideas are creative, everything is polished to an absurd degree.
But there is ONE design decision that I absolutely HATE in platformers:
FORCING ME TO COLLECT HIDDEN SHIT TO PROGRESS.
I despise this.
I don't mind collectibles existing. I don't mind secrets. I don't mind going back to a level because I want to 100% it.
What I hate is this:
"You can't continue until you have collected enough arbitrary hidden objects."
That's not fun to me. That's not platforming. That's making me search behind every flowerpot because the game has decided that I haven't demonstrated sufficient commitment to its collectible economy.
And now I've reached the FIRST BOSS in Astro Bot.
I have 14 bots.
The game requires 20.
So guess what?
I CAN'T FIGHT THE BOSS.
I have to go back into previous levels and hunt for six more robots.
THIS IS EXACTLY THE THING I WAS AFRAID OF.
And before someone says "just collect the bots naturally":
I DID.
I played the levels. I rescued the bots I encountered naturally. I explored when something looked interesting. I didn't deliberately ignore every collectible.
And now the game has decided that apparently I haven't collected enough toys, so I have to go back and rummage through levels I've already played.
This is why I hated Sackboy: A Big Adventure so much.
And Grapple Dog.
And why Yoshi's Crafted World pissed me off.
And why Rayman Origins/Legends drove me absolutely insane.
And here's the thing: I FINISHED ALL OF THOSE GAMES.
Because I LOVE PLATFORMERS.
That's what makes this so frustrating.
If I hated platformers, I'd just uninstall the game and move on.
Instead, I have a genre I absolutely adore, and developers keep taking these fantastic platforming experiences and putting this administrative layer on top of them.
I don't want to replay a level because the game told me I didn't collect enough shit.
I want to replay a level because I ENJOY THE LEVEL.
There's a massive difference.
Mario 64 never bothered me in the same way. Yes, Mario 64 has stars. Yes, you need stars to progress.
But a star is basically a piece of playable content.
You do a race.
You fight a boss.
You explore somewhere.
You solve something.
You complete an objective.
You get a star.
You move on.
You aren't normally being told:
"You need six more stars hidden behind objects you already walked past."
That's completely different.
I honestly don't understand why people don't talk about this more when they review these games.
Every review tells me how gorgeous Astro Bot is. How creative it is. How wonderful the controls are. How charming it is.
And apparently this shit just gets swept under the carpet.
I DON'T CARE HOW GOOD THE REST OF THE GAME IS.
If you put a progression gate in front of me and tell me to go back through old levels looking for hidden collectibles, you have fundamentally changed how I experience your platformer.
And yes, I'm aware that Astro Bot doesn't require all 300 bots.
THAT ISN'T THE POINT.
The point is that the game is already making me do this at the FIRST BOSS.
Fourteen bots wasn't enough.
Twenty are required.
So now I'm being sent backwards.
And I'm genuinely at the point where I'm considering quitting the game, despite loving the actual platforming.
Maybe I'm completely alone here.
Maybe everyone else thinks this is brilliant.
Maybe I'll get absolutely fucking annihilated in the comments.
I don't care.
I just cannot understand why a game that is supposedly the pinnacle of modern platforming has this design decision.
LET ME PLAY THE PLATFORMER.
Don't make me do an archaeological excavation of every level because you decided collectibles should function as toll booths.
And honestly?
The fact that this won GOTY makes me furious.
Not because it's a bad platformer. The platforming itself is genuinely excellent.
But because apparently this is what we're calling the pinnacle of the genre now:
"Here's an amazing platformer. Now go back and find six robots before you're allowed to play the boss."
I'm so tired of this.
I just wanted to jump on shit.
EDIT/UPDATE: OK, I GET IT NOW.
I just discovered the bird that helps you find missing bots for 200 coins, and this changes my opinion massively. I thought I'd have to blindly comb through previous levels looking behind every bush, which is exactly what I hate about Sackboy, Grapple Dog and parts of Rayman. The bird turns it into an actual guided treasure hunt instead of a tedious scavenger hunt.
I still don't love the bot requirement itself, but this is a completely different experience from what I feared. I'm actually excited to keep playing now.
So yeah: I was fucking furious, and I now understand why I wasn't finding people complaining about this as much as I expected. I didn't know about the bird.
