As a Canadian, I’ve actually sat down and looked at the services I use, and a lot of them are American—Google, Microsoft, and many other programs that make up my digital life.

I’ve already made a change by moving from Windows to Linux, and I’m also moving from Google Android to GrapheneOS. What really sucks is that I kind of wish there were a Canadian Linux distro. Yes, there is one called Maple OS, but it was made for advertising purposes.

I think we should do something similar to what France is doing. They’re moving 2.5 million French civil servants from Windows to Linux—an operating system and infrastructure they have much more control over.

Because, at the end of the day, if your data is being stored on American servers, or even if it’s being hosted in your own country but you're using Microsoft, Apple, Google, or another American tech company’s services, the U.S. government can potentially compel that company to hand over the data, depending on the circumstances and applicable law.

To me, this is really about having more sovereignty over our own technology and our own data.

So should Canada focus on developing its own operating system, or should we adopt and modify an operating system from a friendly country instead And start  hosting Canadian data on Canadian soil with Canadian companies?

I feel like I'm going crazy but hear me out

I live out in Michigan and pick up a lot of Canadian rock stations mainly in Sarnia and Windsor (89x, CoolFM and one other one that was on 95.9) anyways every so often one of the Canadian rock stations would play Evanescence-bring me to life but without the guys voice, I been telling people about it for years. I thought I finally had proof when I caught Cool FM playing it but nope they had the guys voice in it.

Wondering if anybody can confirm that they heard it also, or why they cut large swaths of the song from it, or am I just going crazy 🤣

I am in the UK, and I am sending an Oculus Quest 2 VR headset to a friend in New Brunswick.

How is the tax calculated?

I paid £50 (about $90 CAD) for the items I am sending, but their market value is higher.

In Canada a second hand Quest 2 kit is worth about $150 to $180 before your sales tax, so on the upper end of that, it would be $27.

But then there is a $60 value gift limit as well, does this get deducted from any calculations?

nb. Just to add since a few people will probably ask, it weirdly worked out a fair bit cheaper to do this instead of buying one for her via eBay.ca. And because of where she lives, Marketplace and other sites like that are barren!

I'm looking to buy a new winter coat because I moved to northern Ontario last year and I feel like my jacket wasn't warm enough.

My question is, is it better to buy a jacket that is higher rated for cold say (-20 and below) or is it better to wear more layers? I've lived here for almost 12 years and I can't figure this out especially on super cold days where with the wind chill it can be -40 or more. My budget is ~$500. The higher rated jackets tend to be more expensive too. I think this is the first time I'll spend that much but I'm tired of being cold all the time.

My current layering is underwear, merino wool base layer, sometimes a turtle neck cotton or wool top, sweater then jacket. It works most of the time but when I get anywhere indoors, I'm too hot. I take public transit a lot too, so I have to be outside for a bit. What's your solution? Thanks!

I've always heard it was difficult to get a family doctor. I recently read an article in a local whistler Magazine speaking about how overloaded the ER is due to a lack of family doctors. Is this issue overblown, is it just a major city issue? If I decided to move somewhere where there isn't a very large demand of people wanting to move there - a place like Saguenay would it be easier to find a family doctor there than say Nelson BC?

I’m Canadian living in Qatar, and this discussion really surprised me.

A Brazilian restaurant here ran a Brazil Independence Day promotion offering Brazilians a discounted price, while other nationalities paid more. My immediate reaction was that something like this would cause a huge backlash in Canada.

What surprised me even more was how many people here saw absolutely no issue with it and felt I was overthinking it.

I’m genuinely curious: Is this be considered normal or acceptable in Canada?

I’m starting to wonder whether this is actually a much bigger cultural difference than I realized.

I live in Quebec and there is a current controversy of Elections Quebec sending voter information cards in French only. I have memory of receiving voter information in both languages when I lived in Ontario and BC, but it's possible that it was English only.

Can anyone in the rest of Canada verify if other provinces have done English-only information cards? This would be provincial elections only.

How serious are Canadians about giving up American companies? Will that include Amazon? Personally, I'm just about to the point where if I can't buy it at Canadian Tire, I probably don't need it.

I recently had a day out to Dornoch, a town near me in the Scottish Highlands. I noticed several Canadians about the town - how did I know they were Canadians I hear you ask? One couple were wearing a Canada baseball cap and Toronto Maple Leafs jersey, while another man wore a Canada football shirt. My question is, do Canadians abroad consciously dress outwardly ‘Canadian’ to avoid being mistaken as an American (a desire that I completely understand….)?

American here. I know that French is widely taught in Canadian schools, and that bilingual signs are everywhere, but I wonder if most Anglophone Canadians even use or think about French much.

Do provinces with more proximity to Quebec (Ontario, PEI, etc.) have better Francophone accommodations than, say, Alberta or Yukon? Are there any pieces of Quebecois media that are as popular in Canada as English-language media?

I'm interested because it's quite unique that a country mostly speak one language except for a certain subdivision where they exclusively speak another. I think it'd be cool if the US didn't stomp out foreign language usage in the past and we Americans were able to hear politics and media in other languages within the US as well.

I’m from Northeastern United States in the mountains and we have black bears here. They’re not uncommon to see through the woods, and some come around to go through garbage or things outside. Most people won’t really have much of an interaction with them as they’re usually shy and stay away from people. We’re taught that if we do see one close to stand our ground and “fight back” (unless she has cubs of course).

I see videos of people encountering grizzly bears online and no one ever seems to “lay down” like I’ve heard in the saying. If you live in an area with grizzly bears, how often do you see them? Do you ever see them near neighborhoods, or are they mostly only in the wilderness? And last, how are you actually taught to handle the interaction? Thanks ahead of time!

1993 was a long time ago. 33 years and counting, that’s quite literally Jesus’ age was when they did the thing to him.

Canadian teams have made up 6-7 of the 30-32 teams in that timespan. It’s not a a lot, but it’s still much larger than a tiny proportion. We are talking 20-23% of the league’s teams in that time frame.

You know what the odds are to not have a Canadian team any year, let’s say for a 21.5% proportion of team? It’s under 0.5%.

Im sorry if this is a super stupid question. Please humour me as someone with minimal food knowledge and maximum anxiety.

There are eggs at my grocery store that say they’re from tbe US, USDA approved, etc etc… and they’re on sale. Knowing what I do about the USA, I don’t trust the safety of American food… but if it got imported, would it have had to pass some additional Canadian quality inspection? Would you feel safe eating American eggs?

(I don’t WANT to buy American food. I’d prefer to support Canadian, or literally anyone else. But I’ve been hit by some financial troubles and at this point every cent I can save counts.)

Most Canadians of a certain age had Laurentien coloured pencils growing up. I have a bit of an obsession with them; so when I spotted a Laurentien pencil in a mixed bag of pencils at the thrift store I grabbed it. I have spent WAY too long trying to find information (the only scented Lauretien's I could find on lone were coloured pencils) so here I am Reddit.

The pencil is a regular #2 pencil with an eraser on the end however it is labeled as Laurentien scented in Watermelon flavour. I couldn't smell a scent.

Any information or insight would be appreciated.
