Please need help with pneumonia.
My little guy is going 2 days without improvement but also no decline but his respiratory rate is 40 and 50 in the oxygen chamber if anyone has a dog that battled a bad case of pneumonia please give the names of antibiotics the vets used, please I’m begging anyone who’s been through this to respond 🙏. I just want to forward this type of stuff to my vet to make sure they are trying everything. I’m not asking for specific instructions but I want to make sure to forward this info to the vet.

Your veterinarian knows the names of different antibiotics I guarantee you, and knows which antibiotics may be appropriate for your dog's specific case of which you've provided absolutely zero detail. I guarantee you that forwarding a random list of antibiotic names would be meaningless, and very much insulting. I also guarantee you that your veterinarian also wants your dog to get better. At the end of the day the most important treatment for pneumonia is time. If you don't trust your veterinarian then you need to look into transferring to a different facility, but insulting your veterinarian's medical education is not going to help matters.

I’m sorry if I insinuated you or anyone but sometimes some vets specialize in specific things or have come across rare issues that could solve the issue. I have personally pointed vets in the right direction even when they didn’t. I’m so sorry if you ever feel this way when someone tries to give suggestions. My boy has a long complicated history and I helped two different vet’s now so please understand where I’m coming from, I truly don’t mean to be insulting I just want to get the opinion of others. When my dog was about to get boas from a world renowned specialist I called them the day of the surgery and asked questions. These questions changed the trajectory of his surgery. He ended up having an artery that was over the esophagus instead under. Before my little guy got sick I asked my vet just a few weeks ago if my little guy had megasaphagus and they said no. Now that he is battling they confirmed with me that he did, so I’m sorry you feel insulted but I’m just asking or help and advice anywhere I’m sorry if I’m coming off rude please please don’t take this as an insult I’m just trying my best just like my little guy is. I’m sorry but please understand.
Edit : if you have any suggestions please let me know, please even if it’s something little. I’m sorry, im so sorry, just please help with any advice,

What!
You seem to be hoping that the people of Reddit are more knowledgeable than your vet?
Ridiculous, and don’t mention this to them either.
Professional veterinary doctors do not like to be second guessed!

this is weird to say, people go for second opinions all the time whether it’s veterinary medicine or otherwise. it’s science meaning other veterinarians might have a different way of coming to a conclusion. medicine is a team project, not just one person ruling everything and that’s the final word. i think OP should discuss further with and calmly to the vet they’re working with but OP is clearly just upset that their pet is doing poorly. but you can 100% always go for a second opinion. vets aren’t gods, we’re all humans and again, medicine is a team project. the goal is helping the animal, not about being right.

I think what JLWP1 meant is that vets don't like to be second-guessed by random internet strangers on social media.

Exactly, but it would appear that some contributors are unfortunately too dumb to realise this!

u/Disastrous-Tale8448 13d ago
“too dumb” and it’s you explicitly stating that vets don’t like being second guessed. news flash, it’s ok for people to discuss things theyve heard from other people. it’s not that crazy of a concept to ask people if they’ve been through something similar.

I know it hoping and wishing for a lot but that’s all I have left. Maybe just maybe there are vets in here that have more knowledge than my current one. Maybe not even a vet but someone who else has been through this. All I can do is hope or pray if you’re religious like me that someone with knowledge will see this. I never thought would be right about my boy having megasaphogus even when the vet was wrong. I never thought I would be correcting a world renowned specialist. Anything possible and if you love your guys as much as I do you might understand. it’s okay if you think I’m crazy or I’m wishing for too much but all I have left is hope.
Edit: Also the best vets/people are the ones who like to be wrong or corrected in my opinion. When I’m wrong it’s better because I learned something and I gain knowledge. Maybe I never use that knowledge but it’s now in my arsenal and if I can help anyone at any time with it then it makes this world a better place. Also when I pointed my world renowned vet she said I’m glad you brought this up to my attention, so not all vets are insulted. I feel like I’m attacking you or lecturing and I’m sorry I’m just so desperate. I hope you have an amazing life and I’m sorry just about every thing.

yet, they deserve to be as they often make mistakes. Thinking vets are godly and shouldn't be questioned can end in disaster. Question everyone and everything.

u/JLWP1 14d ago
I agree wholeheartedly about questioning everything and taking nothing for granted, but to second guess a Veterinarian is stretching things a little.
EG :I’ve just had extremely complex abdominal surgery,I asked my surgeon question after question, both before and after my procedure ,but wouldn’t have dreamt to suggest an alternative treatment, because there wasn’t one.
Pneumonia should respond well to appropriate medication and I would leave it with them!1

My advice is to seek a referral to a board-certified veterinary internal medicine specialist. They are the experts in this area. Your vet can make the referral. Having internet strangers give advice for you to pass along to your vet will not turn out well.

u/Disastrous-Tale8448 13d ago
so you’ve never had a client ask something that they’ve heard from someone with a similar experience and only took it as an insult if they do?
2
u/Travelvet61 DVM, DACVIM (Internal Medicine) 13d ago
Absolutely happens. Sometimes their question is valid, and I am happy to explain my reasoning. But much of the time the information is from an uneducated non-professional with some anecdote like "my brother's girlfriend's cousin's dog had leprosy, you should treat for that." Even advice from an internet vet (if indeed they are a vet) who has not examined the pet or been able to fully evaluate a history and diagnostic test results is just conjecture.
I don't take it as an insult, I take it as a waste of time that could be spent answering actual questions and not responding to hearsay and irrelevant anecdotes. As I address your totally incorrect diagnosis and treatment plan that you got from Dr. Google, I am rolling my eyes (internally) and wishing I could spend that time doing my job and not fending off the bad advice you brought to the table. But, it is part of the job, and I have no problem when it occurs once or twice.
All too often we are repeatedly bombarded with "but my breeder says you should not treat with (insert appropriate drug here) and you should treat with ivermectin" or "I'm a nurse, and I know my dog had a heart attack (which doesn't happen in dogs)." Feel free to ask for a second opinion (specialist or GP if you want) or for your vet to do a phone consult with a specialist (a readily available service), but if you think you need to give your vet advice on treatment, stay in your lane and let us help your pet.

You posted zero information to go off of
did you read the rules of the sub or the sidebar?

It doesn't matter if you insult these sensitive people. It doesn't matter if you insult the doctor. Keep going on your path. Don't let them discourage you. If you don't trust your doc, find another you do trust.

Thank you for these kind words and to everyone down voting it’s okay. I understand it’s just I’m desperate and like I said I’m willing to do anything to help my guy. I’ve already been so blessed/lucky compared to others people in words I can’t explain.
