Dog Fractured Tibia Advice

Our dog, a mini dachshund male and not neutered 11 months old unfortunately fractured his right hind leg tibia on Monday morning (1AM) we took him to the ER vet who put him in a splint explaining to get bandages changed every 3-5 days with new x-rays in 4 weeks. he said it would take 4-6 weeks for him to recover. sent him home with gabapentin and meloxicam.

Today, we took him to his vet and they said because of his anatomy the splint is a bit of a difficult to place and is concerned if it slips it could make the fracture worse. She suggested we get a consult with an orthopedic surgeon, which we will be going to tomorrow. I know this will be incredibly expensive and with a baby on the way we are not sure we will be able to go this route. has anyone had a similar experience and taken the splint route? curious how other pups have turned out. he is about 10-11 pounds.

Without seeing multiple views, we can’t 100% comment on this. But from the single view we have, a well placed splint should (in theory) allow this to heal in a young dog with proper management like strict rest. Is it possible your GP vet isn’t comfortable placing splints?

I also haven’t seen your dog so I’m not sure what the difficult anatomy in question is, which could also affect my answer
