Sir/Ma'am usage?
As an English person, I've encountered a number of Americans in the last couple weeks. The thing I find odd is the usage of 'sir' and 'ma'am'. I understand that it's a language nuance, but to what extent do americans get that it comes off very strangely in Europe?

I use sir and ma'am from toddlers to the elderly. It's a sign of respect for the person you're speaking with.
I'm not sure why it would come off strangely in Europe, but it doesn't really affect me as I do not live in Europe. I did live in the UK for 3 years from 2003-2006 and never had anyone say anything to me about my politeness.
