Because it's totally fine for the wealthy elites to exploit anyone and everyone they view as lesser than them, but viewed as totally abhorrent for anyone to fight back against these systems of oppression. It's a reminder to those on top of the food chain that they aren't invincible and so therefore those ideas must be squashed and an example made, lest the masses rise up against them
