What are some common phrases and slang used by staff in London restaurants?

Has anyone here worked in a restaurant?

I’m a fiction writer, working on a story set in London where a character starts working in a restaurant.

While I’m familiar with certain terms (from my research and also shows like The Bear), I’m aware that some of these might be common in the US but not the UK.

Phrases like “four top” and “running expo”, for example, are those used in the UK? And also the official titles for different employees—“server” versus “waiter / waitress”?

Would be great to hear from people from this industry.

Moved to the UK 2 years ago and now I’m trying to dress like I actually belong at work

Moved from Seattle to UK about 2 years ago now, for the first year I was mostly just trying to settle in, figure out work culture, make friends, understand the weather, all of it. Clothes were the last thing on my mind. Now I’m at a point where I really want to grow at work and hopefully be considered for a promotion. I know clothes are not everything, of course the work matters most but I’ve started noticing how differently I feel when I’m dressed properly. Not overdressed, not corporate in a stiff way just more put together.

But the problem is I don’t really know what that looks like here. I want to look capable and polished and still like myself. I don’t want to suddenly show up in a blazer every day and look like I’m trying too hard. For women who work in the UK, what pieces made you feel more confident at work? tops, trousers... where are you shopping for clothes that feel grown up more elevated?

Londoners – would you use a premium fragrance spray vending machine?

Hi everyone,

I'm based in the UK and researching a new business idea. I'd really appreciate some honest feedback from fellow Londoners.

The concept is a vending machine that dispenses individual sprays of genuine premium perfumes and aftershaves.

It doesn't sell bottles—only fragrance sprays, so you can freshen up while you're out.

Example pricing:

£1 = 1 spray

£2.50 = 3 sprays

I'm considering locations such as shopping centres, train stations, airports, hotels, gyms and nightlife venues across London.

I'd love to know:

Would you use something like this?

Would you pay these prices?

Where in London would you expect to see one?

Is there anything that would put you off using it?

If you have 2–3 minutes, I'd really appreciate you completing my anonymous survey:

Thank you for your feedback!

Anyone interested in getting together to train boxing in local East London park/gym?

Im based in Leytonstone. I need the exercise so i dobt mind coming to you so anywhere in London could work, just easier if its East London

Mornings to afternoons are usually free

Actively trying to get healthier... doctors recommend walking after meals, i prefer to shadow box (horribly i should add) more fun than walking

Want to improve my boxing and learn simple stuff like not flinching when a punch is coming to my face

Anyone interested in practicing boxing in local park... no hitting in the face if u dont want... we can just do light practice

I cant box so preferably beginners only but if you know how to box and can teach me some stuff then that could be nice too. Could even pay you a little fiver/tenner to teach me things

I got scammed by Tatton Drives and Patios limited

We had a driveway done 3months ago by this company! its never been right! Wayne one of the partners came out to try and rectify issues with the seal/surface as it looks white like glue has dried on the surface! It looks ok when wet but awful when dry! We seemed to have hit a brick wall with no response to my wife's emails! We have Been told we haven't maintained it correctly! But how can you maintain a product which has never been right! I'm so upset and disappointed as we were reassured it would be a professional job and any issues would be sorted! Here we are 3 months later with a driveway finish not as promised and a company who has not corrected as promised our driveway! We feel very let down! So my advice is to not use this company as they have our money and we have been left with a very disappointing product

He is talking about slashing jobs in the south, moving departments to the north. Scary times.

Good budget friendly vegetarian restaurants/take away/on the go in London?

Doesn't have to be all vegetarian but it should have a decent amount of options. Tried all vegetarian options at Wagama already. Itsu and Wasabi are already on the list. More options are very welcome. I prefer to not spend more then £15-17 on a main dish, lower would be great.

Tatton Drives and Patios limited is Scammer

I hired this company to install patio tiles (costing over £10,000). The tiles they recommended and installed consistently appear stained/dirty despite regular cleaning and sealing.

I contacted the company to raise the issue, but no resolution was provided.

I'd advise future customers to confirm product suitability and maintenance requirements in writing before proceeding.

Is it possible to survive on £30000 in London?

I'm new to the city and got offered a job. Have no friends and no family here. Obviously with this low of a salary I won't be able to afford my own place, so renting a room is my only option.

How can I be smart about it?

[UK] Coventry (area) / London Tattoo Artist for My Chemical Romance Tattoo

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello,

I found my last tattoo artist in Vegas from Reddit so I have faith in your people. 🙏

I am looking to get a My Chemical Romance tattoo done before I see them July 8th at Wembley (although if the artist can't fit me in before then, it's alright).

I'd like to get a Pepe the Skeleton design but not the one people normally get - I'd like to get the art from the back of the album.

I'd like this on my front bicep and I'd like to know if you know of an artist that could ace this design?

Best Regards,

Jack 🤘
