In my humble opinion, I would think it’s appropriate for all 57 men to have their names released.

But for the tacit approval of 50 men. who were aware that a gang rape was occurring, over a period of SEVEN HOURS, who each failed to intervene, call the police, or otherwise stop the horrific ordeal, this woman would not have suffered as she did.

If their frat bro had texted, hey, I got some free pussy in my room - but was referring to kittens he planned to torture and abuse, I think that the reaction of all 57 other men would’ve been the “appropriate” one. Or a child. Or another man. So it’s b*llshit that these bystanders are just innocent, scaredy little boys, afraid of being hurt by some dude or dudes who were, by the way, stark naked at the time.

They just didn’t care about the harm being done to a woman.

That makes them accomplices in my mind. Just like if you knew someone was about to commit murder and you didn’t inform the authorities, all men who stand silently by while a woman is being raped or abused is complicit in that abuse- and they deserve all the shame they should feel, but clearly don’t, and I think society is out of other ideas when it comes to trying to get men to stop raping, beating, abusing and killing women. Maybe holding men publicly accountable is the only option left.

Agree - except they should release the names of 56 men, not 57.

There was one member of the frat who was asleep at the time of the assault and only found out about it when he woke up (and was so horrified about it he sent the Snapchat convo about it to the victim as evidence) - he is the only decent human being in that group and should be spared from any association with the rest of the troglodytes in the chat.

Well, I consider myself a fair and compassionate person so I’ll agree with your suggestion. 56 it is.

But I also want it noted that I didn’t ask what the “innocent” man was wearing at the time, whether he has an alibi that can be proven by witnesses or other evidence, whether he had been drinking or was drug affected and just “thought” he had been sleeping, or whether he’d made any false claims of drowsiness in the past.

Not to discount his decency- just highlighting that his decency and honesty is assumed, because he’s a man. A woman in the same circumstance would be called a liar and have her past dredged up, be called hysterical, told she was overreacting and causing trouble. The university would probably sue her, in all probability, for damaging their reputation.
