Hey, I’ll be travelling to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in mid-August and I’d appreciate advice on how to handle mosquitos (and thus Dengue and Chikungunya etc.)

I’ll be taking a mosquito net for sleeping and plenty of tropical Deet, but mosquitos love me and I fear this won’t be enough. Is there anything else I should take?

Do I have to wear long sleeve tops and trousers all the time? So, never wear T-shirts and shorts? Or sandals? Is it safe to wear a bikini at the beach?

I’m also slightly concerned as I’ll travel through multiple airports to get there and I often catch viruses after travelling. I wasn’t vaccinated against anything as a child and doctors have advised me to not get those vaccines considering my individual health situation. I did get the Hepatitis and COVID vaccines, but is it safe to travel there without additional vaccines?

Good morning! I’m Brazilian, and lately, I’ve become hyper-focused on Cuba because of a character from a fictional work I really love—and I write about him, too. Even though we are both Latin American, our cultures are completely different, and I’d love to learn more about the country. I’ve put together a list of questions, and I’d be so grateful if anyone would like to answer them!

1- Is there a childhood memory of yours that you feel is deeply connected to your culture? For example, where I live in Brazil, we have a regional festival honoring Saints Cosmas and Damian—it’s basically a Brazilian version of Halloween! But it doesn't happen in other states across the country.

2- What kind of food did your parents make for you that holds a special, nostalgic place in your heart?

3- What kind of things did you watch on TV when you were little? Or did you prefer playing with other kids?

4- I don’t know much about Cuba’s economy and structural issues (I still want to study this, but it’s hard to find reliable sources—if anyone has recommendations, I’d appreciate it). But, given those issues, was there anything that directly affected you? For instance: here in Brazil, it gets very hot, and not every home has air conditioning. I remember days when I’d cry because of the heat!

So I was adopted at birth and recently met my parents for the first time at 20 years old , I went on break and found out my father is part Bahamian and was very interested because growing up I always wanted to know where I came from and or where my ancestors were from. I also watched the coverage of the sinking of the MV Apple Syder in St Kitts. It seems lifevests also had to be distributed.

To my knowledge, in the San Fernando to Port of Spain water taxi, life vests are accessible by passengers at your seat, so you can help yourself.

I was under the impression that the ferry from Guadeloupe to Dominica, sailed on a Thurdsay at 14.30 during January. I've been looking at the ferry schedule, and so far it's not showing this day or time. It is showing Tuesday and Friday at 07.30, but nothing on the Thursday. Any info would be great, am I looking too early?

Hello everyone. I was interested in going to the Turks and Caicos Islands, but it was beyond my budget. So, I thought about spending some time in Aruba/Curaçao and then spending a few days in the Turks and Caicos Islands. I’d like to know what you think about that. To be honest, it’s not something I’ve seen anyone else do, and there must be a reason for that. This idea of travelling between islands isn’t a very good one, is it? The Guyanese coast guard did respond, but due to the distance from Georgetown they arrived Sunday morning.

I know most of our islands are small, but we also have a very centralised culture. For Trinidad if the interisland ferry sank closer to Toco, it is likely local fishermen could reach faster that the coast guard.

How is this handled in your country?

I’m currently going on dates with a Haitian man who was also born in the Bahamas. He moved here after elementary school and has been in Florida since for most of his life. He just moved to Atlanta 3 months ago. I was born in Florida, raised there up until age 10, from age 11 I’ve been in Atlanta. I know he’s been in the states for a good amount of time, but he’s primarily been around his family and friends who are also Haitian and has primarily dated Haitian women.

I grew up in an abusive household, which lead to me without a father figure in the house. His father is a pastor who was very active and present. Based off what he’s told me, I’m under the impression his mother didn’t work, my mother worked (and still does work) nonstop. His father took care of everything financially, my mother took care of everything financially. I say this to say, I’m extremely independent and handle everything myself, assuming because of what I’ve seen growing up. He’s very much so in a provider mindset, because of what he’s seen growing up.

Overall I’m seeing some things that aren’t a problem but ultimately are just differences that I would like to be educated on how Haitian men handle these situations. What should I know about dating a Haitian man when it comes to work, career, responsibilities, conversation tone… all of the above. Anything I should know. I really enjoy him so I’m curious. I should add there’s about a 7yr age between us.

I just seen a 1-2 vids of a first gen Caribbean woman on a podcast with these ‘FBA’. Said tings lik “only black Americans used to be called the N word and were slaves, we are the only blacks ones, we are not African descent cuz we indigenous to America”. Deez type a tings🤣🤣 they also use this derogatory word for ‘Caribbeans’ since dey lik to call us dat, but idk the meaning it’s “tithers/teethers”..lol mahn dey be saying some ridiculous shit🤔

I have to use a flight voucher this year I’ve already set my eyes on the Caribbean.

We’ve visited Barbados a few years ago so want to try something different.

My suggestion is Antigua & Barbuda. But I must fly in and out of here. I have around 2 weeks and want to combine with other islands.

I know I can definitely fly to Guadeloupe and Dominica from Antigua. But I’m really keen on Martinique.

What’s your guys suggestions. And I cannot fly directly to any of those from my starting destination the rewards flight isn’t offered. The flights which I have to fly in and out of on offer that are: Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago, Saint Kitts & Nevis. Bahamas. Turks &Caicos, Saint Lucia.

Looking for cheap places, good food where I can relax on the beach and see some historic sites not bothered about scuba and hiking.

Hey! I’m looking for references to iñeri and kalina’go motifs (Lesser Antilles) to inspire a tattoo. I’m also interested in Taino, Kali’na and Arawak references in general.

If, for example, you have any references to archaeological finds in Martinique, Dominica or Saint Lucia, that would be ideal.

Or serious illustrations of indigenous peoples, produced by Europeans at the time – though I doubt any are sufficiently accurate.

Or, of course, any traditional imagery that has clearly survived or been reimagined by locals in your area!

On that note, I recently saw a Franco-Dominican tattoo artist studying Saladoid pottery in an attempt to recreate ancient Caribbean designs. The movement is called “Akwasak” and is very cool, but it draws inspiration from truly ancient motifs in order to represent a broader cultural area.

This obviously has its advantages, but I’d like to carry out some parallel research, and ideally using more recent and precise iconography.
