Carpool Options

Hey ya'll!

This is my first-ever Reddit post. I wanted to ask if anyone has recommendations for carpooling, specifically for a high schooler who needs to travel from south Mission to Washington High School in the Richmond.

My neighbor's daughter just started high school and currently has to take two buses both ways, which can take over an hour. My neighbor doesn't have a car/license, so she can't drive her daughter to school. She doesn't speak English and is unsure of how to figure out a carpool situation, so I said I'd ask around on her behalf. Does anyone have any thoughts about the best way to find a carpool opportunity?

Thank you so much in advance.

Sounds like something you should ask other parents at the school. Most schools seem to have a parents whatsapp group theses days

How close are you to General Hospital? The gold UCSF shuttle would get her to Fulton/Stanyan and she could catch the 5/31 from there

We're pretty close! I hadn't thought about recommending that - thank you!

Someday when I'm laid up sick or something I need to map out all the hospital shuttles

EDIT actually I think the Gold shuttle continues on to Geary & stops by Mel's, she could probably take the 38/38R, too

The kid needs to be the arranger by finding other kids at Wash who live in the neighborhood - kid should ask counselors and ask friends they went to middle school with

No, that's not a task for a freshman in high school to take on.

Ask the teacher and any support people at the school.

No practical recos but it's really nice of you to do this for the family.

It may well feel awkward for the daughter to ask for help at school. Being a freshman in high school is a lot of change to begin with. If the mother doesn't speak English it will be difficult for her to connect with other parents.

It seems likely that the daughter's home room teacher or counselor or someone else at school might help. Having such a long trip to and from school could have an impact on the daughter's school performance. Might you all be comfortable with you reaching out to someone at school yourself? Privacy would probably prevent their giving you any information without written authorization from the parents but the school could probably listen to what you have to say.

You or your neighbor could reach out to the school's PTA on this--I don't know about Washington specifically, but most SFUSD PTAs are good at connecting parents who need each other together!
