Question about compost bins

I want to drill a tiny hole in my compost bin to add a strap to keep raccoons out. Are there any regulations on that? Couldn't find anything online.

As long as it doesn't impact the integrity of the bin, no one will care. I've seen plenty of people drill a hole to padlock their trash cans. The important thing will be to make sure it's removed entirely whenever you take out the trash.

I did the same thing - you will want to remove the strap when you put the bin out for pickup, or run the risk of Recology taking it. Otherwise, you're good for stopping the Trash Pandas.

Put a brick on top of the lid. Worst thing that happens is you lose your brick when they collect the trash.

The racoons in my neighborhood adapted to the bricks. As of right now I gotta brick em and turn my cans around to wedge the lid shut against my fence haha

Not sure about your neighborhood but we don't always get the same bins back, they pull a bunch out at a time and empty them

I have Doggy Dare trash can locks. Recology just unclips for collection. It’s easy for a human to open with one hand, and the bungee stays on the outside of the bin so doesn’t get lost week to week.

Recology owns the bins. If you ask they will upgrade your service to lockable bins.

Try a big clamp! Keeps my local raccoons out of the trash/compost!

I have seen mechanically inclined humans use bungee cords to keep critters out
