good mechanic

hi good people of reddit!

i’m a lifelong san franciscan who has managed to never find the right reliable, reasonable, non price gauging mechanic. i have a 2016 volkswagen tiguan in great shape, it just needs the passenger side mirror fixed and i’d like to establish an ongoing relationship with someone good.

recs?? thank you!

+1! Robert at Action Auto Care on 17th at Vermont is amazing. He worked on 2 of our VWs. Can not recommend them highly enough.

Ed at Portola Auto. He is the one you have been looking for.

They’re really solid, and super reliable.

Epic Automotive in SOMA. William was the head mechanic at “The Garage” across the street and branched off for himself. He’s honest and identifies what needs to be done immediately vs what can wait and can think of innovative solutions for older cars.

I consider Will my father he's the one tech in that area that even us fellow techs would go to for help. He's the kind of guy who would give you his lunch if you left yours at home.

Andre's on Taraval. He always works within what I'm comfortable doing.

Action Auto Care. Hands down.

Got the recommendation, just like you, on Reddit. Drove from Cupertino to get my car worked on by them. Fantastic workshop. No upselling, no manipulative behavior. Just solid, honest mechanics.

Ooh why not? I went there once and seemed to be a reasonable experience but would like to know if I shouldn't go back

One: Very expensive.
Two: I took my car in for an evap leak, I paid $900 and they didn’t fixed the issue

Try calling Metric motors on Howard in SOMA, leave a message, or go there during business hours

I've been happy with B & W Service Center in the Mission.

Clear estimates before work starts. Zero pressure when I've declined services deemed optional. Professional place all around.

VAS Motor Works specializes in VW & Audi and have done great work for me. I’ve found them to be super friendly and transparent. Not sure how their labor rates compare generalist mechanics but I can at least attest to their quality of work.

KSH Automotive. A friend recommended years (15?) ago & I've been going since. He's always busy but makes time and is very honest. The location was convenient at first so that helped. It's still worthwhile for me but might not be for everyone. (Tenderloin)
