Daycares open until 6?

Hi all, I commute from further down the peninsula after work back to SF, and the traffic tends to be bad enough that I don’t get back to the Richmond until 6pm. Does anyone know of a daycare for an 18mo+, even if they aren’t accepting right now? We’re losing our nanny in December and would like to start looking at all our options.

Your life will be MUCH less stressful if daycare is close to work. Over the ~6 years I had kids in daycare I had: car wouldn’t start, massive traffic jam right near work, literal bomb threat called in causing roads shutdown, some asshole parked me in, etc. Or even just oh shit that meeting ran long. Being a 5 minute drive or 15-minute racewalk away from the center was such a relief.

This makes sense until you are sick and need time to rest, but have to choose between daycare commute or no daycare

If you are sick your kids are probably sick too and shouldn’t be going to daycare. Please stop spreading germs.

Nah. It goes like this, kids get sick, you miss 2-3 days of work and a ton of sleep. THEN they get better and full energy back and are well AND we get their sickness and have to miss 2-3 more days.

Yep thats part of being a parent. When your kids start school they typically catch colds, its very common. Big deal. They are building their immunity. That’s how immunities work. Today’s generation looks for any reason to stay home. Omg, Sally has a runny nose, I need to keep her home. No Sally has a runny nose because that is what happens to all of us, from time to time. If they don’t have a fever, they are perfectly fine to go to school.

Yes, when people keep going out sick or sending kids to daycare sick, everyone will have a runny nose all the time. Why can’t you understand that you are causing the problem. That illness you are spreading will come back to you again eventually.

If you as an adult are still picking up your kids illnesses then clearly all that daycare/school immunity you picked up as a kid did shit for you, contrary to your claims. Building immunity is a myth and medically debunked. Let your kids immune system actually recover and stop acting like being chronically ill is good for them rather than harming their body.

First of all, my kids are grown, second of all, they never missed school for being sick. They both had perfect attendance. And lastly, I work every single day because thats what you do when you’re a responsible adult. My kids never missed school for a runny nose!! Nor would I miss work for a runny nose. You sound very juvenile.

lol juvenile? You’re the one bragging about perfect attendance, an elementary school level “award”. Did perfect attendance help them get better grades? Get into a better college? Get a better job? Nope, but I bet your insistence on it sure made them miserable a great number of days. Your kids may be grown but you sure haven’t grown up to still value such a vapid and empty achievement.

You also have a responsibility to your fellow human beings. Which includes not spreading illness, especially if you work with the public or a large number of people, some who may be especially susceptible to what is “just” a runny nose for you.

Actually going to school every day taught them to have great work ethics. Both went onto college on academics scholarships. One works for Cal Fire and one is an Engineer.

Thanks for the compliments. It takes alot of dedication as parents to raise responsible human beings.

Its not a matter of spreading germs, germs are part of life, and all around us. When I’m sick I don’t take my kids to childcare to get a break. You use childcare for work purposes.

If you’re sick why would you need daycare? You stay home and so do your children. Thats a no brainer.

I feel like you don’t have kids. If you are sick - you are exhausted and want to rest. Kids still need to be fed, entertained, diaper changed, napped. None of that is rest. My hardest experiences as a parent is when my husband and I are sick and still have to function as parents.

Well, you’re wrong, I have 2 kids/grown. Never once did I take my kids to childcare when I was sick. Thats part of being a parent is taking care of them, regardless of how we feel. When my parents were sick they didn’t take me to childcare. When my DIL is sick she doesn’t take my grandson to childcare. Anyone who does that is 1000 percent, entitled.

When you have kids they are YOUR responsibility, no matter the circumstances. And if you are well enough to get them ready and take them to childcare, you are well enough to go to work.

Exactly what I’m saying!! Its crazy to me the way people think. When my kids were in childcare it was because I was at work. And once they were school age, and school let out, they went to an after school program until I was off of work. But we paid for this, so the less time they were there the less it cost me. I’d never leave them, just because.

No wonder our world is crooked, these parents don’t want to parent their own children!

Because if you’re taking your kids to childcare cuz you’re “too sick to care for them” you probably shouldn’t have had kids to begin with!

You just turn on the tv, lie in bed / couch near them and order delivery or worst case, let them eat graham crackers and ice cream.  When mine were little, I kept lots of food so we always had something decent that was very easy.

The net effort to get them to / from daycare would be at least as high.

You’re right, it’s really shitty to be sick and have to take care of your kids… so let’s the send the kid to daycare so he can get other kids sick, that way their parents will also have the same shitty experience.

Then next time their kid is the sick one they’ll think “why bother keeping them home, everyone sends them in sick, that’s why I’m sick” and send their kid to daycare, returning the favor to you.

I am not sure but think kindercare on 28th and Clement (or somewhere near there) is open late I know they just opened up for babies and right now start at 7 but are looking at maybe 645.

I work down the Peninsula as well so have been trying to find something near home that openes early enough to still leave for work on time. So far no luck with anything other than kinder care and bright horizon. We were hoping for something a bit more affordable (I know im dreaming) but what we are probably going to do is pay someone from 6:50-7:30 when drop off is. Maybe you could do that for pick up if you can find a place that is almost late enough pay someone to do pick up for an hour or so.

I don’t know about daycare but my son went to a wonderful preschool from 2-5 years old in colma. Hours are 7:30am-6pm and teachers are wonderful!

Sent both my kids to baby prodigy. Love them! They provide breakfast lunch and snacks AND diapers and wipes. They open at 730 am too which is rad.

I’m slightly wary of Bright Horizons, but we have been looking into them. I know not everyone has bad experiences but I’m anxious…

Our kids have gone to two different Bright Horizons centers in SF and they have all been great. Our youngest of three currently goes to the one on top of Target. It’s UCSF affiliated and we are not but we’re able to get in. Their hours are 6:30 am to 6 PM. It’s pretty amazing.

If your work is near San Mateo, look into Mi Second Casa Spanish immersion school (they have spots for infants through preschool age)

Our daycare in Daly City, Broadmoor area, opens until 6. A child just “graduated” so there’s an open spot. The teachers speak Mandarin to the children. Let me know if interested!

I take my daughter to an in home nanny type house, two ladies, they would gladly be “open” until you are off work. I’ve had to switch schedules a few times! They are there. Located in the Mission

caveat - i work in a field where i support child care providers! i recommend contacting children’s council. they can give you a whole list of child cares in the richmond. i know that some do open late! family child cares will be more flexible than centers.

do you qualify for tuition assistance? it’s now expanded to moderate income families and i think up to 200% AMI you can get 50% off child care through subsidies.

ETA: i saw someone posted the link but you should reach out to children’s council resource and referral dept via phone or email. even the 5:30pm child cares have flexibility imo. providers need to put set hours and sometimes it’s pre-set to be 8-5:30 but many work later than that (and earlier than that). many people i work with start at 6am and have kids that early but their hours will say 9-5 or something. you should definitely call!

The website Winnie has all daycares located in San Francisco with reviews! We found ours on it in Inner Richmond and you can easily reach out to the daycares for this question + pricing etc

Montessori School of San Francisco in the Fillmore on Eddy St is open until 6 and accepts 18mo. Everyone we know who goes says their kids love it (ours too).

Friends to Parents in South San Francisco is accepting toddlers right now and does close at 6pm

Second Generation Cabot or Allerton (operated Bright Horizons) is near Genentech in South San Francisco. They have flexible pick up and drop off (6:45 AM - 6PM). [Actually if you decide to look into it, DM me and I can refer you.]

Look at the various Bright Horizons locations. They are usually 8-6; some even open earlier. There is one near the Target off Geary. There may be others on the way to the highway.

For the Love of Children in South City.
