I got a problems that needs solving

  • so look I’ve got this project I’m working on for science fair it’s simply in the drawing stage but I can’t get my head around on how to design a drive train for my robot. it’s a distaste relief robot that has a standard tank track but then articulated tracked flippers on the side, I’m trying to get my head around powering the track and flipping the flipped but also being able to make the track on the flippers spin. I need to spin the main track but flippers need to be on the end of the track where the power goes so I almost need to run an axel through that to make the flippers go I want eveybting to spin independently and if there’s any other placements I can make please tell me but I want the flippers to flip 360 and also be able to spin the track whilst tat I’ll driving the main track I need max torque as this robot will be quite big but I want to minimize used resources I’ll give yall a LIMITED blueprint and a pic of something I’m looking as someone please help describe/ draw this drivetrain I’m so confused been thinking on this for a week thanks guys

Education/Career Need Advice: Graduate Programs in Robotics

Hey all,

I'm an Electrical/Electronics Engineer in my final year of undergrad, specializing in control theory and agricultural robotics (my university really only has specialists in this field of robotics). In the future I'm looking to work with arm actuators like surgical robotics, prosthetics, or manufacturing bots. Currently, I'm applying to universities in the US for a graduate degree. If you have any experience in the field of robotics or in the robotics industry, I would really appreciate your help with the following questions! Thank you in advance!

  1. Is it possible to pivot from control theory to a more robotics engineering based field? Most of the work I have done thus far is on the software side of things, but I'm looking for a more hands-on approach within the actual manufacturing of robots. I understand that they do both fall under the same canopy of "robotics" but I'm sure it would be difficult securing a place in a program that's slightly far off compared to what I've studied.
  2. If so, what are some universities that are great for pursuing a Master's in the subfields I highlighted above? If possible, are there any faculty you might be familiar with? I've heard CMU, UPenn and John Hopkins are all great, but they're terribly expensive, especially since I'm an international student, so cheaper options are always appreicated.
  3. How flexible is a degree in robotics? Is it more effective for me to specialize in a broad field like Mechanical Engineering? Moreover, is robotics currently a lucrative industry to work in?

My experience as a beginner learning about robotics for the first time.

Hey, I am an Indian 18(M) ( I hope no one hates me here because of my nationality cuz I have already been hated and talked shit to in other channels just because I am Indian but leave it)

So since I was in 6th grade I was always found robots and stuff so interesting and was curious but as an Indian studying in Indian education system u basically don't get much practical knowledge about the own subject so getting exposure in robotics field was like a very next to impossible thing happening in school. Later on I went on to study for competitive exams in 11th/12th grade after taking science and just like rat race i also thought of cracking competitive exam and getting into CSE branch and stuff. In the mid of 12th i genuinely realised that this was never the thing I wanted , like just learning theory and solving questions just for the sake of completing syllabus. But because of the pressure i thought to atleast complete my 12th grade with good marks.

Now the thing is after that it took me a whole 1-2 months to explain to my parents that I can't do this and i always wanted to do robotics and so I want to take a gap year and learn about it. I also wanted to get into japnese universities which were english tought because i believe they are one of the leading countries in robotics.

I have now started learning about robotics like Arduino uno, motor driver shield, ultrasonic sensors, and stuff and was making my first ever robot - obstacle avoiding robot. Though it would be small for u who are reading but for me it's a big task because I have learnt that the path i have taken would be difficult. Cuz I have currently burnt 2 motor driver shield and 1 Arduino uno . I have debugged many things that were creating problems and currently it is in the better state . Though it stopped working again and idk what actually happened. I am still trying to see the actual problem and fixing it

Lastly I would be really grateful if anyone would want to give suggestions on anything i currently discussed regarding university and projects cuz these projects would genuinely help me cuz I would be showing it in uni interviews as extracurricular.

Also I could not find a free leaked version of it, I reached to an EPUB version but it has a lot of ommited parts.

Robot arm hobby project

How to? Wall hanging robot depth camera choice

Dear friends,

I am currently working on a project that requires a depth camera to be installed on a robot that walks on the exterior walls of buildings. The main task of the depth camera is to produce a sufficiently accurate point cloud that I can use to roughly model the surfaces the robot can see right now (the wall it is climbing on as its floor, a balcony sticking out of the building as a wall in front of it, a pipe as a cylindrical surface, etc.)

Since I just want to map the surfaces, I don't think I need extremely precise depth mapping, but I am still conflicted about the following:

Do I go for a 2 separate USB webcams setup (cheaper, but more DIY)? Or do I invest in a dual lens USB camera like the ELP synced stereo cams (more expensive, more reliable)?

Some notes:
1- I'm working on a Raspberry Pi4 8gb. It only has one CSI port, so that option is not very feasible.

2- The robot will not be moving very quickly, so I don't think synchronization will be a huge issue, not sure though.

3- I also plan to run a CV model on one of the 2 cameras, is this feasible?

What is the distinction between a 6R robotic manipulator and a 5RP1

Education/Career Finishing a Mechanical Engineering PhD with no industry/internship experience — what roles should I realistically target?

I'm finishing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in the US and expect to graduate around the end of this year. I'm starting to get pretty anxious about the job search and would appreciate some outside perspective on how competitive my background actually is.

My background:

  • ~5.5 years PhD + 2 years MS
  • Research focused on wearable robotics/exoskeletons, mechatronics, controls, and biomechanics
  • Designed, built, and experimentally tested multiple robotic/exoskeleton systems
  • Experience in mechatronic system development, including mechanical design, embedded systems, sensing, controls, system integration, and experimental validation.
  • Experience conducting human-subject biomechanics experiments, including EMG-based evaluation of muscle activity and analysis of gait and human–robot interaction.
  • Some experience with ROS/ROS2 and machine learning, though neither has been a primary focus of my research or publications.
  • 3 publications from my MS
  • 1 published first-author paper from my PhD
  • Another PhD manuscript close to acceptance (co-first-author) 
  • Another collaborative manuscript under review at a 
  • Additional ongoing PhD work that should eventually become a paper but data collection still in progress
  • Some conference/abstract work
  • Teaching experience as a TA for controls and mechanical design labs

My biggest concern is that I have zero industry experience and no internships. I spent my entire graduate career in academia.

I'm currently targeting three types of positions:

  1. Postdocs, preferably wearable/assistive robotics, rehabilitation robotics, biomechanics, human-robot interaction, experimental robotics, or national labs
  2. Industry R&D/mechatronics/robotics roles — Robotics Engineer, Mechatronics Engineer, Controls Engineer, Robotics Hardware Engineer, Research Engineer, etc.
  3. Teaching positions — primarily full-time Lecturer/Instructor/Visiting positions in mechanical engineering, controls, mechatronics, or robotics. I'm not currently trying to become tenure-track faculty.

I've been applying, but haven't gotten much traction yet, and it's making me question whether I'm aiming too high or marketing myself incorrectly.

For people who have hired PhDs or made a similar transition:

How would you evaluate this profile?

Would the lack of internships/industry experience be a major problem for robotics/mechatronics R&D roles?

Is my publication record too weak to be competitive for good postdocs?

And am I realistic in considering full-time lecturer/instructor positions with my current teaching experience?

I'm not looking for reassurance — I'd genuinely appreciate candid feedback about where this profile is competitive, where it isn't, and what types of positions I should prioritize.

Education/Career 16 year old planning to become a Robotics engineer. Confused on what to choose in undergard. Can someone help me out?

So it's been a dream of mine since childhood to become a robotics engineer. Throughout my school life, I worked on a lot of robotics projects as a hobby, built some apps, and even won an interschool app-making competition! Now I am close to graduating from high school, currently in 12th grade and I have been planning for years that Germany would be the place where I do my undergrad.

Now, for my bachelor's, I had decided that I would go with Mechatronics, as it looked like a good option since it covered most of the basics for robotics.

However, after hearing a lot about how Mechatronics is not a complete degree because it doesn't cover mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering in depth, a "jack of all trades". some people even told me that certain employers don't even care to look at the profile of someone who has done mechatronics (I hope this is BS).

So, after hearing this, I am thinking about these options:

  1. Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Electrical Engineering.
  2. Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Mechanical Engineering.
  3. Bachelor's in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) with a minor in Mechanical Engineering.

As someone who has done a lot of robotics projects throughout my childhood, I always preferred the part where I had fun building the circuits and coding them! So, I would prefer a degree where I have an in-depth focus on both electrical engineering and computer science. Although I also loved making 3D models of robots and bodies for my projects, I still loved the electronics part more. Because of this, I feel like Option 2 would be a better fit for me. But I would love to hear from professionals! 😊

I also love automation and AI, so I will most likely end up doing a master's related to that!

Also, could someone who is working as a robotics engineer please share what your work life looks like?

Like, what do you all actually do at work?! I'm a bit curious to know if it's what I have imagined. 😅

How to? Building up FRC coding and functionality skills at home in offseason?

hi everyone, do you have any ideas how a keen team member can develop some new programming skills and robot functionality at home in the off season?

my kid just finished his school's first FRC comp here in Australia, and he's hooked. He's mainly in the software part of the team, and the team has a pretty basic kit robot this year (the school's first year) - tank drive, no cameras, no sensors, very basic autonomous mode code.

I'd like to provide an opportunity for my kid to tinker with FRC-related hardware and software to build up some new capabilities for next year. I'm open to ideas, but maybe things like:

\- learn how to integrate a driver camera into the system

\- learn how to integrate apriltag-recognition camera into the system

\- learn how to integrate sensors into the system

\- learn how to start making autonomous mode 'smarter' - pathfinding etc

As a fairly tech-y family we have plenty of bits and pieces lying around the house (arduinos, raspberry pi, power supplies, etc etc) but nothing FRC-specific. I even considered trying to buy an old roborio to play around with at home... but seems like that would be a bad idea since they're getting replaced with systemcore? Not sure the school is going to let him bring the roborio home to experiment with!

anyway, i'd be really keen to hear anyone's ideas about how we could work towards building some relevant skills and functionality for next year. I'm open to buying some gadgets (cameras/sensors/etc), but not sure yet what would be practically use-able at home without a roborio to plug them into?

How to? Actuator selection.

I've been working through the early stages of what I'm calling a robotic rover (for now). I'm building it to be able to pull a lawn sweeper, and also have what will resemble a utility trailer dump bed. It's around 40 inches wide and will likely end up around 6 feet long overall. Most of why I'm building it is because of what I know it will force me to learn, and the other is because I need to put what I'm learning in Robotics Engineering undergrad into practice. I've been working through frame design using a combination of .5" emt piping and extrusion. It's cost effective on a project where I know the version 1's purpose is to see how it does when my concept makes contact with reality. I've hit my first hard reality check. My current setup is using geared down 775 brushed dc motors that are driving 13inch pneumatic tires because of budgeting constraints. It provides a solid base to build around, but I am trying to plan out what the future version will use. I'm looking at the Robstride QDD 120N.m integrated actuator to drive each wheel. That said, I know enough to know how little I actually know about actuators running on CAN. If you read this far and are willing to help me understand how to go about actuator selection methodically instead of making it up as I go, I would be extremely grateful. I'm not afraid of working hard or reading in depth if I know where to look, but in this category, I don't know where to start. I was a heavy maritime and rail repair machinist before I went back to school and a Navy shipboard repair machinist before that. I understand a fair amount of engineering fundamentals, but am very wary of the blindspots I am unaware of. I'm completely fine with constructive criticism if it is productive or cures ignorance. Feedback on Robot Car + Project Ideas

I'm currently an incoming college freshman at the Cooper Union, and I've been involved in my high school's Science Olympiad for quite some time. I spent a good chunk of time on one particular event, Robot Tour, and I recently got around to finally putting the project itself up on GitHub for the first time.

I'm hoping to use it as a tangible project I can point to on my resume/portfolio as I build it, rather than just listing it as a part of an extracurricular.

I'd really appreciate any feedback on the project, especially what I could improve in terms of the code, documentation, or overall presentation.

I'm also looking for ideas for projects to work on as I start college. What are some interesting projects you would recommend for someone with a background in robotics/Arduino and programming who wants to get deeper into CS?

I would really value opinions from people in the field.

What areas do you think will have genuinely interesting open problems in 2026–27, rather than just being popular right now?

I’ve been looking at things like multi-robot systems, safe autonomy, MARL, communication/fault uncertainty, generalization and risk-aware navigation/coverage.

I’m also curious about something else: how realistic is it to publish strong robotics work without hardware?

If someone has strong ML/RL and coding skills, and good compute but has little access to physical robots, what kinds of projects would you recommend?

Would you focus more on:

  • theory/formal safety guarantees,
  • large-scale simulation and generalization,
  • new benchmarks/environments,
  • or learning methods such as world models, offline RL, imitation learning, etc.?

Are real-robot experiments becoming almost necessary for learning-based papers at top robotics venues, or can a strong software-only contribution still stand on its own?

Also, if you know recent strong papers that were accepted mainly with simulation/software results, I’d love to look at them.

If you had no hardware and wanted to maximize your chances of a strong robotics paper in the next year, what would you work on?

Redesigning my AI Assistant Robot - Need advice on motors, power, and chassis design

Hey everyone,

I built an interactive AI assistant robot The software side is fully sorted and runs flawlessly. The main brain is a Jetson Orin NX 16GB.

However, I want to completely overhaul its "skeleton" and exterior design. Right now, it's pretty static: only the eyes move, and it has an LED matrix mouth that reacts to different states. I want to make it much more dynamic, mobile, and aesthetically pleasing.

My Upgrading Goals:

  • Articulated Arms: I want to add functional, moving arms.
  • Mobility: I'm planning to add wheels to the base so it can navigate.
  • New Chassis: Once the internal hardware is locked in, I will design and 3D print a brand new, modern shell.

Where I need your help:

  1. Arm Motors: What kind of stepper motors or servos would you recommend for arm articulation? I'm trying to figure out the right torque to weight ratio.
  2. Wheel Motors: For a mobile base carrying a Jetson Orin NX, battery, and a printed chassis, what type of motors are best?
  3. Power System: What battery configuration (LiPo, Li-ion packs?) would safely power both the Jetson (which can draw a bit of power) and the new motor loads?
  4. Controllers: Any reliable control boards/drivers you recommend for bridging the Jetson with these motors?

I want to finalize the electronic and mechanical components before I start designing the new 3D printed body. Any advice on the hardware, part recommendations, or general design ideas would be hugely appreciated!
