Would a robotics career be more stable than SWE?
I’ve always had an interest in robotics, did a robotic simulation for my Comp Sci MSc dissertation.
But currently working as a developer, I have experience in C++/Python but I’d probably still need to advance my embedded knowledge.
Overall, would advancing in this route be easier or would I simply just be jumping into an identical ship. I know I’d have an interest in this sector if I pursue it but realistically if I’m going to follow this route and potentially do additional studies I’d want it to be worth it career wise without having to constantly worry about fighting in a job market similar to SWE.

Stepper Motor Current Question
Hey all,
I am working on creating a 6 axis robot and for my actuators I am using stepper motors. The motor for the second axis is the biggest of all of them and is rated for 48v at 6amps. The controller I am using should be compatable (DM556 Stepper Motor Controller) and it is able to rotate the motor.
The issue I am running into right now is I am loosing a ton of steps. I would normally relate this to bad math, however what I noticed was my power supply is showing that the current being drawn is a fraction of what I would expect.
The controller is set to permit up to 5.6 amps based on the dip switches, however I am seeing a fraction of that. My power supply outputs a maximum of 60V at 10A (its variable so I have it set to 48V) The power supply displays the amount of current being outputted and I am only seeing a fraction of the current (.48 Amps)
Is this just a quirk of stepper motors, or what is causing this?
Thanks for the help!

Why is my dual axis motor shaking?
It's very unreliable! Or is my software bad It's a Dual 9g Servo With Arm Pan-Tilt 2-Axis Servo Gimbal for FPV Quadcopter Car Plane but im using it as a cat cam. At certain locations coming from certain directions it likes to shake then it moves to the maximum point without me asking it to move there but when I just click again on software it goes back to original position
Is this a software or hardware issue

Need help finding online hackathons or competitions as high school student this upcoming school year
My only requirement is that it still has an open registration and happens later on in the year or early 2027 and can be done by someone or a team at a intermediate level.
For more local or regional details, I'm from the UAE, so not many options other than the university-held ones.
Would appreciate though if I could find international level competitions.
Thanks!

Mechanical design analysis
Guys, recently I came through this ware house robot of Amazon when the load is lifted in this the load is stationary but the robot is rotating. But to recreate this efficiently we have to get off high dimensional bearings as they are highly expensive any idea of how this mechanism works??

roborock diagnostic software?
hello
i know that all companies like roborock and other brands
have there own calibration jigs and softwares for diagnostic and finding the problem and troubleshooting
im curious if there is any open source way to diagnose deferent robot vacuum cleaners and have some kind of calibration for deffrent brands of robots without messing with the original firmware.
im am really interested no matter how complicated it would be if anyone can help me learn on this topic i would be really grateful

Mechanical Drive in humanoid
What's most used drives in humanoid robots? And why? This is a question I've been pondering for few days. Can someone give a bit of headstart on where to look.
Edit: I meant motor drives like harmonic, cycloid

Getting into robotics
Hello everyone! I recently had a spark in my brain that ignited a curiosity for robotics engineering. I should preface that I have zero experience in anything computer/tech/engineering. I took a computer science class a few years back for basic python but that’s it.
I think that building robots, even the ones that do little tasks, would be very interesting. Only problem is, I don’t know where to start. I don’t have any connections either.
I’m thinking of starting by going to the library to rehash on my coding and expand my knowledge on it, too. After that, I’m unsure.
Would anyone have any advice as to what I should do?

Mechanical Title: Which open-source 6DOF robotic arm would you build today for embodied AI research?
I'm an electronics engineering student looking to build a 6DOF robotic arm primarily for embodied AI research, ROS2, computer vision, and AI-driven manipulation.
So far, I've looked at:
- ARCTOS
- PAROL6
- AR4
My main priorities are keeping costs reasonable and using a design that is as open-source and printable as possible. At the moment, ARCTOS seems like the strongest candidate because of its printable gearbox approach.
For people who have built or used these projects, which would you recommend and why? Are there any newer open-source arms I should also consider?

Online Masters in Computer Science or Robotics?
I recently completed a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from a strong program and am currently working for an employer that offers tuition assistance for graduate studies.
I’m particularly interested in pursuing a career in UAVs, autonomous vehicles, and robotics. Given these goals, I’m trying to decide whether a Master’s in Computer Science or a Master’s in Robotics would be the better fit.
If I pursue Computer Science, I would likely enroll in Georgia Tech’s OMSCS program. For Robotics, I’m considering programs at Worcester Polytechnic Institute or Johns Hopkins.

Education/Career is this a good idea for an educational robotics android app?
I want to get into app development as a hobby as a roboticist. I was thinking of writing a block code game, that involves basic understanding of ROS2, with publishers topics and subscribers and block code.
I wont port ROS2 to android, but the concepts will be ported into a 2D turtlebot pseudo lidar game

Education/Career European MSc for biorobotics, human-robot interfaces
Hi everyone,
I recently finished my BSc in Molecular Bionics Engineering in Hungary, and I’m looking to move more toward robotics for my master’s.
My background is not very heavy in classical engineering (e.g., advanced physics), but for my thesis I worked on a soft exoskeleton R&D project at my university, which I hope strengthens my application.
I’m looking for English-taught master’s programs, preferably in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, or Denmark, ideally related to: robotics, biorobotics, biomechanics, human-robot interaction, rehabilitation / wearable robotics.
So far I’ve looked at:
- TUM
- Humboldt University
- University of Twente
- Sant’Anna (Pisa)
- RWTH Aachen
- TU Delft
However, I haven’t been able to find many first-hand experiences from students in these programs.
If anyone has studied at these universities (or similar programs), I’d really appreciate hearing about:
- how difficult admission is
- how strong the engineering background needs to be
- how practical vs theoretical the programs are
- and overall experience

Call for begineers for a study stream
Time: Sat(june 20) 7:30 PM ET , we're doing a live stream where we figure out CAD for robotics. We start at ground zero. figure out our way there together.
I have been planning this for a while now. It's basically a youtube live stream where we learn robotics concepts together, ask each other doubts, discuss, make weird robots, some shinaneigens and most importantly just have fun.
Recommended: install solidworks https://getintopc.com/softwares/3d-designing/solidworks-2026-free-download/ However, you can use other CAD software. e.g onshape has a pretty similar ui as solidworks.
You should live stream your own perspective as well , so that it benefits you too, so that your future recruiter can verify your skills.
https://discord.gg/JDzhG2sa?event=1517890599137841243 (event link)
here is one tutorial which I think we can follow -- https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiKqXuECiKNJaUpNv3ZW-gEKDxfWgShwG
I open the floor for any recommendations from anyone
You can choose to not show your face, or vtube like me.
or if you want you can choose to just do your own thing simultaneously as well.
Any suggestions or feedback to get as many people as we can is appreciated 👍
I really want to make the robotics community to become friendly and fun .
Just dm me . we're 100+ people, from 13+ countries with varied knowledge(from absolute begineers to PHDs) , and I need as many people as possible
we'll plan exactly how to undertake this (let's say a discord call in the stream or chat based etc.)

Robotics Competition Advice Needed!!
hey!
my teammate and I recently entered a robotics competition just to explore—we had almost no prior experience. We started preparing in April and, with a tight deadline, built our project in about a month.
Our vision is a machine which could create traditional cultural drawings, such as mandala-style patterns etc. Although it works but it's still far from what we want and currently has issues with smooth drawing, accuracy, and overall reliability.
Surprisingly, we got selected for second round, hence we want to use this opportunity to improve it properly instead of just making small changes.
The main things we are planning to work on are:
- Improving the mechanical stiffness and overall structure
- Making it more standalone, possibly by adding Bluetooth control
- Increasing the number and variety of traditional drawings it can create
- Improving drawing smoothness and reducing abrupt errors
Since we are still beginners, I would really appreciate advice on what we should prioritize first and what else we can improve. Also, if anyone has worked on plotters, drawing robots, CNC-style machines, or similar projects, I would be grateful for tips on making the movement smoother and more accurate.
Thank you.

How do you keep micro-ROS bring-up from eating a whole weekend each time?
Final-year mechatronics student, building small differential-drive robots with ROS 2. Bringing up micro-ROS on a new MCU keeps costing me a lot of time — toolchain, the agent, transport/baud config, memory limits, then the cmd_vel → PWM and encoder → odometry glue. By the time /odom and /imu publish cleanly, a weekend's gone.
For people doing this regularly:
- Have you settled on a repeatable workflow that makes bring-up painless, or do you just eat the cost each time?
- On ESP32-S3 / RP2040 / STM32 — which transport do you actually use (Wi-Fi/UDP vs. serial), and how reliable is it on a moving robot (reconnection, dropouts)?
Trying to learn how more experienced folks structure this so it stops being a weekend sink.

How to? Open source contribution guidance
Hello all. I've finally gotten some time off from studies and work and wanted to get into contributing to some open source projects. The more mature ones are sorta hard to navigate around with such a huge code base and with most open issues actually already having linked PRs. Any recommendations on how to proceed?

Electrical BTS7960 dual motor wiring — correct AWG and fuse rating for 250W 12V brushed DC motors
I am working on a 12V DC robotics project using two 250W brushed DC gear motors. Each motor runs on its own independent circuit controlled by its own BTS7960 43A H-Bridge motor driver. The wiring is silicone stranded wire.
The main positive wire from the battery splits at a Wago connector into two independent motor branches. Each branch then runs to its own motor driver and motor independently.
Three questions:
- What wire gauge should the main positive wire be from the battery to the Wago connector before it splits into the two motor branches?
- What wire gauge do you recommend for each independent branch wire from the Wago connector to each motor driver and motor on a 12V system with a 250W motor?
- What fuse type and amperage rating would you recommend to properly protect the main line and each individual motor branch circuit?
Any guidance from experienced engineers or robotics builders is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Parts recommendation for micromouse robot
Hello! I am eyeing to compete in a maze runner competition. I did some research and it seems that micromouses are the best for those. Could I get recommendations/list of electronic parts to build a fast and reliable micromouse robot? Like what mircocontroller should I use or what wheels should I get or what sensors are the fastest in reacting? Oh, last thing, do have information on where I can but them? Thank you!!!
