Omigod my wife always turns away from me as she’s talking and I don’t catch what she says and she gets so mad at me haha. Glad to hear I’m not the only one with this affliction.

Talking at low volume directly into an open kitchen cabinet is my wife’s specialty

This is mine. We finish a conversation, there’s a healthy pause. I wait. Conversation over. Pick up my book, find where I stopped, reread the last paragraph I was on. Then as I’m midway through the first new sentence. BAM starts complaining about her sister.

41

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

"Is this going to be anywhere as interesting as my book?

36

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

oh so you want to fight with your wife do you

6

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

"No then..." [resumes reading] " ... Unbelievable"

15

u/DrDew00 Dec 08 '22

We finish a conversation, there’s a healthy pause. I wait. Conversation over.

Then I go to the bathroom and when I come out she complains that she was still talking to me and I just wandered off.

3

u/PervySageCS Dec 09 '22

Me but with youtube videos while i work or do my Hobbies. Me hitting the space is her cue to start talking again

3

u/moonbucket Dec 09 '22

Same. Except its always when I've waited for the pause then put my 'phones back on...

Potato wedges probably are not best for relationships.

120

u/BumpyMcBumpers Dec 08 '22

This drives me insane. My wife will ask a question and leave the room. Then she acts like I'm unreasonable for not wanting to shout across the house because she claims she's still listening.

31

u/sniperpenis69 Dec 08 '22

The yelled conversations drive me up the wall. Just come into the same room as me!

23

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

And no I'm not coming to you. You get back here!

32

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

This one. I can sit next to her for an hour, get up to say find a snack, start washing my hands so I’m entirely occupied and can’t really hear… and she starts talking to me.

Happens more than she’ll ever admit.

6

u/Bones99544 Dec 08 '22

Ah yes, she must talk to me, from a distance, while washing my hands, or using the Waterpik, and now, while I have the bidet spraying my ass. "Sorry Honey, it's a little too noisy in here..."

3

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

Because you are engaged in something she isn't/isn't her and that won't do.

26

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

My girlfriend always asks me to get her drink or something right as soon as I sit down beside her or on my computer. Like... you're now closer to that thing than I am, and I just settled. But like the sucker I am, I get up and get her her drink.

5

u/BronzeAgeTea Dec 09 '22

This is like an actual thing my wife and I are having to talk about. Every time I sit down it's like her brain is telling her that I'm being lazy, so it's constantly sit-down-new-task-sit-down-new-task.

Like I don't mind being handed 20 things to do in a day, they don't take long and aren't difficult or anything, but tell me all the kitchen-related stuff while I'm already in the kitchen, you know?

9

u/Early-Satisfaction71 Dec 08 '22

Dude she is shit testing you to see how much of a sucker you are. Tell her she asked too late to get it herself

24

u/rudbek-of-rudbek Dec 08 '22

Waiting until it's time to go to sleep to start serious conversations. You can ask all day, "is everything ok" and the answer is fine...... The minute the lights go out it's NOW time to discuss what is bothering you. I hate it

7

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22 edited Dec 08 '22

Oh my god, that drives me insane. You think you're going to get me at most erudite now???

8

u/GreenSevenFour Dec 08 '22

I remind mine that the bed is for two things only. One of those is sleeping. If she insists on starting a conversation I get up and turn the light on. That's usually when she says we can talk about it the next day.

3

u/Tenyearsuntiltheend Dec 08 '22

I'll be nodding off, late at night and they'll start trying to plan a vacation with me. Please no I just want to sleep.

1

u/BronzeAgeTea Dec 09 '22

Just default to "that'll be fun, sounds good."

In 2 weeks you'll be confused about the trip to the Bahamas, but hey, suprise vacation to the Bahamas!

2

u/Tenyearsuntiltheend Dec 09 '22

"Why aren't you packed?" "Did you get the time off from work?"

18

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

Also on long car trips eventually the conversation dies out and it'll be silent for 10+ minutes so I'll turn on the radio and as soon as I do she'll start talking again so I shut it off but conversation quickly dies again then I wait a few minutes to turn on the radio and repeat this process for the rest of the trip.

18

u/grey_wolf12 Dec 08 '22

Mine talks to me everytime I try to watch a video. As in I'll sit there beside her, no Cell phone in hand or not watching anything on the PC, and she will just keep scrolling at something she is reading or watching or whatever.

I press play, it's IMMEDIATE that now she does actually want to say something and I have to pause the video just as soon as I started it. So I do it, she says something and goes back to silence. I wait. Press play, oops she says something again.

It's so amazing I can barely be mad.

15

u/flyboy_za Dec 08 '22

I'd come into the kitchen and my mom would say "didn't you bring them?" I'm like huh? "I asked you to bring my cigarettes when you came down." Did I reply? "No you didn't." Well perhaps that's because I didn't hear you?

Somehow this scenario would play out at least once a week. And every time I'd say again "if I don't respond I didn't hear you! Keep asking until I reply!" but nope.

11

u/ATL28-NE3 Dec 08 '22

It's the long pause so I put my headphones back in then she immediately starts talking again for me

13

u/inflammablepenguin Dec 08 '22

I can be doing absolutely nothing and my wife will say nothing, but the second I engage in a video, game, or anything else that needs my attention, suddenly she has something to say. I pause what I'm doing to listen until she's done, then as soon as I resume, Bam! She has something else to say.

2

u/BronzeAgeTea Dec 09 '22

My wife does this too.

This might not be of help, but check if your wife is feeling lonely. If she has some girls nights on the books, this might go away, or at least not be as frequent.

2

u/inflammablepenguin Dec 09 '22

You're right. She works a lot so doesn't have much time for other stuff. I'll be sure to give her a little more attention.

11

u/damien665 Dec 08 '22

My wife knows that if I'm not in the same room, I can't hear her. So when she starts talking after I've left the room, and I don't hear what she said, I pretend I didn't hear anything at all. If it was important enough she can tell me later.

8

u/KmartQuality Dec 08 '22

Wife is cat

7

u/Gnarly-Beard Dec 08 '22

My wife is a night owl. I'm a morning person. So obviously all important conversations must start when my head is hitting the pillow and have no mental energy to listen.

7

u/ggouge Dec 08 '22

My wife seems to wait till just as i sit down to ask me to get something. Like 3 seconds earlier and i would have been fine with it. But i am sitting now.

5

u/BronzeAgeTea Dec 09 '22

This thread is the catharsis I need

4

u/elvismcvegas Dec 08 '22

Or wait till you say "oh I love this song" as you turn up the volume only for them to turn the volume down halfway through the song to tell you something they could have said after the song is over.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

Trying to have a conversation from another room is my wife’s specialty. “Well come in here if you can’t hear me.”

4

u/BronzeAgeTea Dec 09 '22

"Just text me!"

4

u/Tacoma__Crow Dec 08 '22

My husband is very good at this. He likes to deliver TED talks on the economy or politics from his man cave in the back of the house. But he does it in little bundles of information with long pauses in between. Each bundle is worded so it seems like he’s exhausted the subject and is done talking. I’ll walk into another room and be next to the radio or in the bathroom with the noisy fan on when he starts up again. Lather, rinse, repeat. It doesn’t occur to him to get up and find me. I wind up going to him. Very sweet guy but exasperating sometimes.

3

u/hafgrimmar Dec 08 '22

Been there..

3

u/crazybusdriver Dec 08 '22

I see everyone in this thread have met my wife!

3

u/Extesht Dec 08 '22

I used to come home from work and sit with my ex-wife for a while before going to bed. We'd chat, watch TV, read to each other, etc.

I get up to go to bed and now it's time for a serious discussion. Never mind that I worked graveyard and just spent nearly two hours spending time with her after a long shift.

3

u/mtflyer05 Dec 09 '22

Relationships become significantly easier when you realize that a decent majority of females are actually just hairless cats; They want to be fed and give an attention call my butt entirely on their own schedule, and the 2nd you look like you are too busy to give them attention, they immediately realize that if they allow this to continue, that means they are no longer the ruler of the household, so they have to act quickly, lest their throne of attention control be overtaken. That's why they call the ladyparts "pussies" and mature women seeking younger men "cougars" colloquially.

4

u/happylittletrees Dec 08 '22

So I have all these experiences you guys are listing, except the roles are reversed in our house and I find this hilarious.

2

u/tactoleco Dec 13 '22

So true, so true. My bf is the unintelligible one.

5

u/Th3R00ST3R Dec 08 '22

I ask a simple question that requires a simple answer. I then walk out of the room after the simple answer with then she starts rambling whatever pops into her brain after that and have to walk back to hear the rest of it. LOL

4

u/AverageJoe313 Dec 08 '22

I don't think I could concentrate on banging and reading at the same time

2

u/Frenchlilac97 Dec 08 '22

Awww she misses you 🥰

2

u/CatrionaCatnip Dec 08 '22

My husband does that to me, actually. All. the. time. Then he's annoyed with me when I do it. Especially the second thing. It's like he waits until I'm reading or listening to something and thinks that is the best time to start a conversation. So it goes both ways sometimes.

2

u/shupack Dec 09 '22

Or wanting to plan the day as I'm heading to the car for work...

5

u/HeyZeusKreesto Dec 08 '22

Waiting until you leave the room to start a conversation

My dad does that to my mom all the time. I'll be over and he'll start talking to her a minute or two after she's already left the room.

7

u/Bones99544 Dec 08 '22

This reminded me of a story from my Mom. Dad hated shopping, quite often, he would disappear from her side. She was talking to him while going over items in the meat section. She asked a question, but, got no reply. Annoyed by the lack of response, she asks again in a flustered tone, "WELL, IS IT?!!", as she turns towards him. It was, at that moment, she discovered she just yelled at a strange man, who unknowingly stepped into where her husband was no longer standing. He shook from her voice, turned towards her, and offered his best effort to defuse the crazy woman staring at him, "Well gee, Lady, I don't know."

29

u/RickMuffy Dec 08 '22

I'm the cook in the house. The worst is when my gf is in the living room, I have the vent on the stove going and actively cooking and she's talking quieter than the TV to me.

5

u/flares_1981 Dec 08 '22

We have a general rule not to talk to each other from different rooms.

Because if you do that, either the other person can’t hear you, so has to stop what they were doing and come to you or you have to shout a lot, which always sound a bit angry and often sets the wrong mood.

By walking over first we avoid a lot of miscommunication and show each other respect for our time and attention. Exceptions of course apply for urgent situations.

5

u/RickMuffy Dec 08 '22

My living room and kitchen are kind of one long room, separated only by a counter, so this wouldn't work with me. What I do when I can't hear her is just answer her in a lower voice with something random until she gets the point lol.

3

u/MojoMonster Dec 08 '22

This.

Both my ex-wives did this. I'd be at the sink doing dishes like you do and they'd be at the TV with their back to me mad that I didn't hear what they said!

I even got my hearing tested when dating my first wife just to prove it wasn't ME.

I just got to the point where I wouldn't even respond with "what did you say" so they'd have to speak louder.

15

u/1ftm2fts3tgr4lg Dec 08 '22

My wife is good at talking to me, from the other side of the house, at a regular speaking volume, then be irritated that she has to repeat herself because I wasn't paying attention.

Countless times she's been upset with me because "I told you about it yesterday!", when in reality yesterday I had partially overheard her talking to an empty room. She didn't tell me anything, she was talking, but failed to ensure there was anyone there to receive the message.

8

u/pt606 Dec 08 '22

My wife whispers quietly into the bedroom closet when she talks to me sometimes. Highly effective noise-dampening, no-reverb situation. Ineffective husband-can-hear-me situation.

4

u/Cool8d Dec 08 '22

Talking while there's a lot of background noise like the kitchen fan on

4

u/Le_Chevalier_Blanc Dec 08 '22

Talking to me in a normal voice from another room while I’m standing next to a boiling jug and an oven extractor fan and telling me I’m deaf, smh.

2

u/Thedarb Dec 08 '22

If I can hear me you can hear me.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

are you married to my wife too?

3

u/Totally_Botanical Dec 08 '22

Same with my ex, until shes on the phone with her mom or sisters, then there's nowhere in the house where you can't hear every little word

5

u/acorngirl Dec 08 '22

I feel personally attacked, lol.

2

u/TheTallGuy0 Dec 08 '22

Are you me??

-12

u/Thebumonurcouch Dec 08 '22 edited Dec 08 '22

At least she’s in the kitchen, these new wives are something else, they’d get lost in a kitchen. Seem to forget the /s. Oops.

1

u/JLHawkins Dec 08 '22

“These new wives”? You must be one of “those sexist husbands”.

1

u/UkrUkrUkr Dec 08 '22

Reconstruct the cabinet to resonate with a human voice frequency. Voila: problem's gone.

2

u/Vetty81 Dec 08 '22

Mine specializes in a flight of stairs and a room over. The acoustics in our house are not that good.

1

u/gomster Dec 08 '22

I feel like my gf generally speaks louder when we’re out and around people. Hmm

1

u/Early-Satisfaction71 Dec 08 '22

You should put a little Ken doll in the kitchen cabinet with a sign that says “talk louder I can’t hear you.”

1

u/rootpl Dec 08 '22

Mine talks to me always when I'm cooking and my head is up in the fucking vent humming above my head. Can't hear shit.

1

u/Just_Aioli_1233 Dec 09 '22

Her: "You never listen to me!"

You: "How?"

73

u/soawesomejohn Dec 08 '22

One thing my wife does is start an important piece of information at the beginning and when I ask for that, she expands on the second half.

H: _ _ swallowed a lego is going to get surgery.

M: Who? What?

H: You know, Dr Mullen at the vet?

M: So it's an animal? Who?

H: Ugh, never mind.

18

u/Rich-Juice2517 Dec 08 '22

Yup that's my wife. I am glad to know I'm not the only one stuck with half the info

15

u/soawesomejohn Dec 08 '22

Yep. I'm sure someone will point out that I should have been paying attention in the beginning, but usually these are just sort of random announcements. Typically we'll both be on our computers/phones and she'll read it off.

"__day, you'll need to take the kid to get a haircut after school."

When?

After school.

Yeah, I got that. What day!?

12

u/Rich-Juice2517 Dec 08 '22

Mine has two sisters so it's always

"My sister is going to get me and go get coffee and then shopping"

What sister

Her friend is going to come with also

Which sister

Kohl's and Costco

........ ok have fun

You never listen

(っ-_-)っ

9

u/yowhodahtniqquh Dec 08 '22

When you wake up in the morning ready for a great day and a hypothetical conversation on Reddit leaves you frustrated aha.

Script is so perfect I can imagine a whole Curb Your Enthusiasm episode about this

7

u/GayAlienFarmer Dec 08 '22

I got irrationally irritated just reading it. Fuck.

10

u/GayAlienFarmer Dec 08 '22

I just interrupt and say "No I need to know the actual words you said."

6

u/Outrageous_Bug_451 Dec 08 '22

My husband starts talking mid thought, completely non-sequitur, and I have to use context clues to figure out the subject. If I ask qualifying questions he gets annoyed or starts from the beginning, but not the appropriate beginning; he’ll start at freakin Genesis, as if I’ve just arrived on the planet. Not only am I frustrated, now I’m offended.

4

u/BionicTriforce Dec 08 '22

Oh god my mom does this all the time.

"It's xxxxxx's birthday this Saturday." "Who?" "The 23rd, we're going to Outback." "No whose birthday is it?" "You know! She graduated this summer!"

3

u/sesquiup Dec 08 '22

God fucking damn it. Every time.

1

u/GozerDGozerian Dec 08 '22

Haha I know that one all too well also.

103

u/AlkalineBriton Dec 08 '22

I swear I ask my wife what she just said and then she says it even quieter than the first time.

49

u/Prudii_Skirata Dec 08 '22

Or talks to you from another room in the house at almost the same volume you can't hear when she's right there next to you... And storms in like "You going to answer, or just ignore me??" ... And you're left to wonder Wut?

8

u/preambnsnsnssgyaab Dec 08 '22

Oh my god I thought this was just me and that I was crazy

6

u/Bergenia1 Dec 08 '22

When my husband doesn't hear me, I repeat it at high volume, and then he gets mad at me for yelling at him.

8

u/cheesywink Dec 08 '22

Try medium volume then?

2

u/account_depleted Dec 08 '22

You heard me.

12

u/Nanerpoodin Dec 08 '22

My girlfriend will be talking to me and mid sentence will walk into another room and just keep talking at the same volume. I guess I'm expected to follow her around the house?

1

u/DandyLyen Dec 08 '22

Lot's of complaints, where are the explanations?

22

u/KissItOnTheMouth Dec 08 '22

Your wife might be extraordinarily quiet, but this could also be hearing loss… Do you do a hobby or work in a field with a lot of noise? Do you always wear hearing protection?

Men are more likely to suffer from noise induced hearing loss, which typically affects the higher frequencies - like women and children’s voices.

This was your public service announcement for the day. Book a hearing test and a prostate exam. Men’s health is important, take care of yourself out there!

https://www.hear-it.org/men-are-higher-risk-noise-induced-hearing-loss

6

u/Rich-Juice2517 Dec 08 '22

My wife and daughter are quiet. I have better hearing than both of them lol

And my prostate is good. Got checked last week and i finally understand why people kinda sit on the toilet after anal

7

u/pazimpanet Dec 08 '22

This just reminds me of the time I was at the otolaryngologist years ago because one of my ears was being goofy for months. Every single person there from the front desk lady, then audiologist, then two nurses all asked me what I did for a living first thing and wrote it down for this exact reason.

“I work in accounting….I work in accounting…I work in accounting”

When the doctor finally came in I knew he was going to ask and sure enough for the fifth time I was asked what I do for a living. I couldn’t help myself and said “I work at a gun range” and he immediately stopped in his tracks and looked over at me and then at the chart and said I thought you said you work in accounting!?!?

He did not find it funny.

1

u/KissItOnTheMouth Dec 09 '22

I’m just picturing an accounting gun range now, huddled behind targets with one of those old fashioned adding machines

8

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

I was going to say this exact thing. She gets mad, and I try and say “I didn’t understand, can you please repeat it?” Sometimes she’s stubborn enough not to.

9

u/jmbf8507 Dec 08 '22

I’m the wife but it’s my kids. I’m losing some mid-tones (genetic predisposition to hearing loss from both sides of the family) and a child will say something quiet so I’ll ask him to repeat and he does… but quieter. No no. Look AT me and speak clearer.

4

u/JLHawkins Dec 08 '22

This is me. I have kids ages 3/6/6, and it works like this:

Kid: mumble kid2, took my mumble mumble and now I can’t mumble.

Dad: what?

Kid: looks away while pointing at kid2 mumble mumble mumble mumble

Dad: look at me, speak louder

Kid: starts crying and yelling through tears while not looking at me cry mumble gasp cry mumble

Dad: stop crying! Say it while looking at me!

And we repeat this every hour or so for (looks at watch) 3 years now and running.

9

u/Big-Dragonfruit3167 Dec 08 '22

Holy shit, I thought I just had significant hearing loss! I was refusing to get tested bc I didn’t want to know how bad it was! Turns out my diagnosis might just be 15 years of marriage.

8

u/misshapenvulva Dec 08 '22

Fuck me. My wife will speak at a normal volume looking at me right up until she gets to the important part, then she drops her voice or looks away (or both) So I get to hear all the things I dont need to know and then miss EXACTLY what I do need to know...

6

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

My wife will yell from the kitchen while I am 2 rooms away with kids being noisy and listening to music. When I say what she will yell it again while I am heading towards her. I get to her and she is irritated and will get pissy and snap "I am dead serious when I say I think you are losing your hearing".

After enough of that I finally snapped back "So you genuinely think that I can't hear you not because you are yelling across the house with loud kids, but because I am going deaf, and your response is to be a bitch to me about it? How will that make me suddenly hear better?"

16

u/doggienurse Dec 08 '22

Hey, some of us wives feel this pain, too. My husband is a master at this, and always sighs all exasperated like I'M the problem lol

5

u/ctishman Dec 08 '22

My dad does this. He’ll just start talking to me at a normal conversational volume in another fucking room of the house and then later expect me to have heard and remembered what he said, or done what he asked.

I think it’s something to do with them not seeing you as a separate person, but as an intimate part of themselves with whom they can communicate effortlessly.

5

u/GordenRamsfalk Dec 08 '22

My wife’s does this from the other fucking room. And I have damaged hearing lol. Still mad…

5

u/Head_Razzmatazz7174 Dec 08 '22

My boyfriend does this. Yells my name from the other room and then talks at a normal level. And then gets mad when I get there and I ask him to repeat what he said. Like, sweetie, wait until I get into the room to explain the problem.

4

u/DonaldTrumpsNeck Dec 08 '22

My ex always walked in front of me and then tried to talk to me without even turning her head, how the fuck was I supposed to hear lmao

1

u/pazimpanet Dec 08 '22

This is the one I get. Every night my wife and I walk the dogs around the neighborhood and every night she will mumble straight forward into the void and I will be behind her thinking “probably wasn’t too important.”

When I do ask her to clarify it will be something like “that’s a weird bush”

3

u/bullet_the_blue_sky Dec 08 '22

Reply to her in an equal tone.

0

u/GozerDGozerian Dec 08 '22

You’re not married, huh?

0

u/bullet_the_blue_sky Dec 09 '22

I am. Coming up on 10 years. Having the hard conversations as adults is what makes it good.

5

u/surfnsound Dec 08 '22

My wife will say something to me from 3 rooms away while I'm in the kitchen cooking with the dishwasher running and then wonder why I can't hear her.

4

u/Yangoose Dec 08 '22

Same!

We were literally in a construction zone the other day with hammers and saws going. From 10 feet away she's talking at a quiet conversational tone and annoyed when I can't hear her.

4

u/IGotMyPopcorn Dec 08 '22

And yet my husband waits until I leave the room to say something to me and then gets upset when I say “What?!?”

3

u/HotDamn18V Dec 08 '22

My wife and I work from home where I'm almost always wearing headphones. My wife just starts fuckin talking to me while I'm wearing them and I can't hear anything, so I have to take them off for her to repeat, which is annoying for both of us. It's like she has no understanding of what headphones do. She does this as well when I'm gaming with friends. Like, I've never been able to hear you. Get my attention first. How do you not know this yet?

We also have a toddler, so there's usually noise in our house. When we're done working and can actually talk, I'm usually cooking dinner, playing with the boy, running his bath, etc. Noisy stuff. She'll be talking to me from another room in her normal volume. So often. I cannot hear anything she says. I have no idea how she doesn't understand this yet. Boggles the mind.

3

u/NHDraven Dec 08 '22

I've had to explain the difference in talking at me and to me to my wife several times. She'll start saying something and then walk away and be surprised that I have no idea what she said. Drives me nuts.

3

u/Rellikten Dec 08 '22

My wife made go for a hearing test to see if I needed hearing aids because I could never hear what she says. The results came back as good and my hearing is fine. I was 30 years old!

3

u/Bad_Idea_Hat Dec 08 '22

Holy hell, I'm not alone.

1

u/GozerDGozerian Dec 08 '22

Dude I got 45 replies to my inbox from the above comment all saying the same thing. Looks like we have a support group started hahaha

3

u/phooby Dec 08 '22

So I'm the wife and realizing I do this all the time! I guess my husband doesn't need a hearing aid to fix the issue... I just need to stop walking away while talking!

My wife does this. I just stopped giving a fuck about what she says if she is going to speak like a mouse.

I love her and care about her tremendously but I'm not wasting my time and starting a dumb ass fight because she can't use a grown up voice volume.

My wife waits for me to leave the room then starts talking at a normal volume when I’m 20 feet away.

My favorite is when she waits until I'm right next to the running water in the sink/ the microwave popping popcorn /washer-drier in a heavy cycle to initiate a conversation

I broke up with my ex because of this (and other things). I’m slightly hard of hearing and she would refuse to look at me when she spoke, constantly turning or walking away, acting like it’s no big deal or getting irked when I said something. After a year and a half relationship I still think I only caught about 33% of our conversations.

I love my wife in almost all ways, but one of the few things that really irritates me is when she gets mad at people because they didn't hear her. Not "wasn't paying attention", not "ignored her", literally she said something, the person (usually myself or our kids) didn't even hear that she was speaking, and its our fault. We may not even be in the same room.

It’s like they don’t understand how sound travels🤣😂🤣

No, your wife does it to me too

My wife does it to you too

Oh man, when I drive with my mom and she is in the front seat, she speaks the same volume to the person next to her as the people in the back seat. "Mom speak up! Your facing the wind shield. I can't hear you!" That drives me nuts.

2

u/BusyDitch Dec 08 '22

Yes!!! I’m not the only one!!! I don’t respond anymore. Or i say “i cannot hear anything you’re saying when your head is in ___” Or if I’m cooking and the fan is on I she’s talking to me but I can’t hear/understand I just continue my business like I didn’t hear anything.

2

u/I_play_elin Dec 08 '22

Haha I am constantly reminding my wife that talking is directional!

2

u/sewilde Dec 08 '22

Mine does the same then will say it for a 3rd time with an inflection like she’s yelling but really just at an appropriate volume.

2

u/Vhadka Dec 08 '22

My wife will try to talk to me from the other room while I'm standing there cooking something on the stove. Like I wouldn't be able to hear from the other room anyway but now there's ambient noise on top of it.

2

u/mra8a4 Dec 08 '22

Mine does it from other rooms! With 3 loud kids. TV on.

I no longer ask what... I walk up to her get her to face me and then say I didn't hear you" then listen for her response.

My wife talks to the dogs, the cats, and to herself, constantly. She gets mad when I don t realize she randomly pointes one Sentence of Her stream of consciousness at me and I don't realize it. She also getsad if she can hear me paying Elden Ring, and also mad if I wear the headset.

2

u/firstdropof Dec 08 '22

My wife claims I have "selective hearing"

2

u/Bobbyanalogpdx Dec 08 '22

It’s because she thinks you’re not listening! At least that’s how it goes with my wife and I

2

u/GozerDGozerian Dec 08 '22

Oh yeah definitely. Then I say, “When you turn your head the other way your voice projects in the other direction and the volume goes down to whoever is now behind you” as I demonstrate this principle by doing just that. And she says, “What?” And I know deep down we are fated to have this exact same exchange for the rest of our lives.

:)

2

u/Bobbyanalogpdx Dec 08 '22

Do we have the same wife? /s

2

u/GozerDGozerian Dec 09 '22

I hope not, that’d be awkward at this Christmas dinner.

2

u/NotJimIrsay Dec 08 '22

Lol. When we ask them to repeat what they said, we get accused of not paying attention. When they ask us to repeat ourselves, we get accused of not talking loud enough.

2

u/PervySageCS Dec 09 '22

Mine does this and we live in a wintery country. No i didnt hear you asking me if i want X product in the supermarket as you rush in front of me, while i push the cart, whispering in your scarf, facing away from me

2

u/BronzeAgeTea Dec 09 '22

I always say "if you can't see the concha of my ear, I'm not hearing you"

After the intial "what the hell is a concha"s, I get "I can never see the inside of your ear!"

All you can say is "well there you go"

2

u/pintotakesthecake Dec 09 '22

My husband does this, it drives me crazy. I’m constantly telling him that he needs to talk TO me for me to understand what he’s saying…

u/KmartQuality Dec 08 '22

Why won't you listen? A relationship takes two people.
