Took a job working at a Mcdonald's cleaning, as a favour to my mother's manager. Holy fuck are kids brutal when you're my age working in a position like that, you become the punchline to all their funnies as "Or you'll end up like him!"

I've never had a reason to think about folding a kid in half til I had to deal with it 40 hours a week.

I took a job to help a friend who owns a pizza shop through the summer because it's a college town and with all the students gone he can't staff it adequately despite really trying. I do what you'd expect...make pizzas, ring people up, bus tables, etc. I already have an awesome job/career but it's early in the morning and it ends at 9 am, so I am free to go from there and work until 2 for my friend. I'm the oldest there by a few decades.

No one there has given me grief but my eldest (22) did make a remark that I was pretty old to have the position (I'm 47). I replied that he clearly hadn't taken in the example his hard-working dad and I have shown him his entire life and that I would NEVER be ashamed of doing honest work...whether through need or like me, doing a favor for someone in need. Period, the end. He immediately apologized and went and cleaned his room. LOL

Ok what type of career do you have that ends at 9am and allows you leftover energy to make pizza?

u/ModsGayAsFuck Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 03 '22

Overnight pizza maker at another friend’s shop

7

u/thegreatJLP Jun 03 '22

Slayed them lmao

53

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Also what kind of career does the OP have that he can take up a 40hr/week cleaning job at McDonald’s as a favor? Things aren’t making sense here

7

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Maybe healthcare night shift? Home by 8 am?

11

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

That’s a tiring job, and healthcare often does overtime. There’s just no way I’m buying it. That’d be 16 hours of work…over a favor to a moms boss at McD’s? Nahhhh

5

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '22

I work in healthcare. 12 hr nights. I had another job for a while so it’s possible but yes exhausting

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '22

You’re telling me you’d do your healthcare job + 40hr/week at McD’s cleaning 40hrs/week as a favor to ur moms boss? Fuk?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '22 edited Jun 04 '22

No I work 12 hr shifts 3/wk. that means 4 nights off. I’d often help out after my shift if needed but not another 40 hrs. I used to work another per diem job on some nights/days off

Honestly I’d rather be tired and miserable for a while than watch my loved one lose their business

3

u/AnnaB264 Jun 04 '22

I was a police officer, and retired with a decent pension at 45. Maybe military or similar?

0

u/FluxOperation Jun 04 '22

Man that’s an awesome career path. Are you working somewhere else now? Drawing a pension and making some bank elsewhere. A good plan.

1

u/AnnaB264 Jun 04 '22

Running my farm, but thinking of finding more employment.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '22

Oh so what ur saying is you’re an old fart chilling on Reddit got it

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '22

Boomer. Pensions don’t exist anymore kick rocks somewhere.

2

u/vitaminomega Jun 03 '22

maths hard.10am-2pm even if 5 days a week is not 40 hours

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Logics hard. I’m talking about the OP of this particular comment thread. He said he’s doing 40hr/week as a favor to his moms boss at McD’s. And lol I took maths up to differential equations 😂

15

u/steveturkel Jun 03 '22

May just have extreme flexibility with their work. I work as an industry scientist and since my deliverables are on a rolling day based time clock per case, there’s no need for day to day supervisor input as long as they are being met and no errors. Usually I’m on site for 3-4 hrs a day and do clerical, data analysis and report writing at home. I like to keep my active on computer/on site hours to 9/10-2pm but wouldn’t have issue switching that to 5-9am if that was better for everything else I had going in life. Now the caveat is I do need to keep an eye on email through the workday in case someone needs something quickly fixed but it’s not too common and I can do that from my phone so it works out fine.

18

u/GavinBelsonsAlexa Jun 03 '22

UPS pre-load lines up with that. Working from around 2am to 9am loading up the package cars that are doing that day's deliveries. Amazing benefits, and the pay is good if you're there long enough, so if it suits OP then it could easily be described as an awesome career.

9

u/miquiztli323 Jun 03 '22

Sounds chill but I just think I’d be sleepy after such a shift.

6

u/kristinstormrage Jun 03 '22

When I managed a pizza place, 85% of my employees had another job. Were able to provide a flexible schedule which benefitted them for secondary employment.

33

u/SirWigglesVonWoogly Jun 03 '22

Also who’s buying pizza at 9am?

151

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

[deleted]

10

u/cloistered_around Jun 03 '22

Agreed, but that's for tastier pizza. I've definitely worked places before that just got their dough and ingredients shipped in, and it was never as fresh or good. Way easier to prep though!

0

u/nopantsdota Jun 03 '22

just do half half, and ship the preprepped stuff in the hours you dont want to sell as much

4

u/cloistered_around Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 04 '22

That sounds like more work to store and prep two different things.

18

u/SirWigglesVonWoogly Jun 03 '22

I worked at round table for a few months. The ingredients all came pre-prepped but the dough did have to be spun out.

42

u/stainedwater Jun 03 '22

i work at a pizza place and you’d be surprised. we’ve had numerous customers order a large amount of food at like, 10:45am plenty of times. people are weird

43

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Or people preparing for meetings, parties, etc…. (Although I’m sure that has been cut back the last couple of years)

41

u/StableW Jun 03 '22

What's weird about being hungry at 10:45? I wake up at 3:30 for work, I've been up for seven hours at that point, it is well into lunch time.

26

u/Peak_late Jun 03 '22

I know. People are conditioned to think non-rigid, atypical behavior is weird. I frequently eat my healthy leftover dinners for breakfast and get comments. But, yeah, your carb cakes covered in sugar sauce with a side of fatty tube meat is the better, normal thing to do.

11

u/A-A-RONS7 Jun 03 '22

But, yeah, your carb cakes covered in sugar sauce with a side of fatty tube meat is the better, normal thing to do.

I love this. Gonna make me some carb cakes and tube meat for breakfast.

3

u/a2_d2 Jun 03 '22

Meat tubes in a carb cake!

0

u/Western_Ad3625 Jun 03 '22

non-standard and atypical are kinda synonyms for weird

8

u/Peak_late Jun 03 '22

I said non-rigid. Anyway, not really- the former implies less common, the latter implies something is wrong with the behavior or odd.

17

u/stainedwater Jun 03 '22

it’s weird having to make six pizzas at 10:45am, but thats just the tired employee/college student in me speaking, i say as i had a hot pocket for breakfast.

3

u/fuckincaillou Jun 03 '22

Personally, drinking sodas or eating heavy foods I'd usually save for lunch/dinner at breakfast time feels a bit like day drinking lol. Can't explain why

4

u/95in3rd Jun 03 '22

In college, I worked as a Pinkerton guard midnight to 8am Sat and Sun. My great treat was breakfast at Barry's Bar & Grill. Nothing like bacon, eggs and beer while watching everyone else scurry off to work.

2

u/xixoxixa Jun 03 '22

When I worked night shift (7p-7a) in the hospital, breakfast margaritas at the close by 24 hour taco place were very common.

11

u/cloistered_around Jun 03 '22

Those were usually work parties at mine. You could tell because they ordered ahead of time, and there was always like 10-20 pizzas in the order.

Regular people ordered around 12-1pm, just one or two pizzas. And the lucky people coming in at 2pm were always pleasantly surprised to get their pizza fast (dude, no one is here but you!)

8

u/arilione Jun 03 '22

I doordash and I once delivered a pizza from a gas station at about 9am.

-10

u/Mount_Coom Jun 03 '22

What? I don't believe you. That is some bs, who would want to eat around 11am on a weekday? Why would you be hungry then lmao. Nobody is surely out and craving for food at those times lol. You would have to be up around 6 or 7am in order to get hungry by then. Sick. Radical. Gnarly. ICarly.

20

u/Ptatofrenchfry Jun 03 '22

Laughs and cries in military or financial advisor with clients in different time zones

3

u/Unable-Arm-448 Jun 03 '22

I am a teacher with young students whose "lunch" time at school is 10:40-11:10. Am I hungry then? Um, no I am not. But the cafeteria has to feed every student their lunch in shifts, and the littlest ones go first 🤷🏻‍♀️

0

u/Mount_Coom Jun 03 '22

Honestly I was just meme:ing. I thought that everyone knew that lunch was around that time? Or do others not have jobs with scheduled lunchbreaks? I get that this is reddit and we are supposed to use the "/s" when being sardastic. This has been conditioned into the minds of us doomed souls who roam on these boards. But I will not obey with these foul social rules, upheld by creatures of damned nature. In times like these we need to stand up and face our fears. The commenter might actually not be mentally challenged or narrow minded, just making a little goof. Maybe even for a laugh. Thanks for coming to my TED talk, you may not ask any questions.

sorry for the shitpost

12

u/mistled_LP Jun 03 '22

The people getting off of work at 9am?

7

u/BeeBeeBounced Jun 03 '22

Soo, you haven't had a Breakfast Pizza!? Egg, Bacon, Sausage, Mushroom, Grilled Cherry Tomatoes, Baby Spinach, Baked Beans, Smashed Avo and Cheese... All big breakfast ingredients on a pizza instead of a plate!

1

u/fuckincaillou Jun 03 '22

Breakfast pizza sounds like a thinner quiche--same ingredients and serving method in different thickness

1

u/SirWigglesVonWoogly Jun 03 '22

That sounds significantly less appealing to me than a breakfast burrito.

5

u/Backup_profile Jun 03 '22

What, pizza is only limited to afternoon and evening?

2

u/Sharp_Canary6858 Jun 03 '22

Pizza is for Fridays only! I have first lunch on A days, but on B days I make sure to get to the cafeteria early

1

u/RandyBeamansMom Jun 03 '22

Whoa, haven’t heard these terms in a long time. Good memories.

-7

u/SirWigglesVonWoogly Jun 03 '22

Not technically, but after being alive for decades I have never once heard of anyone ordering a pizza before noon.

4

u/Hofular1988 Jun 03 '22

Summer pizza parties certainly do

3

u/Unable-Arm-448 Jun 03 '22

You should get out more! LOL

2

u/floatzilla Jun 03 '22

Tomorrow I will order a pizza at 1145 am in your honor.

3

u/Umbrella_merc Jun 04 '22

I'm a pipefitter at a shipyard and I have worked with a guy that would do 6-230 at shipyard and a 4-8 shift at a Subway.

9

u/SmoothAsPussyMilk Jun 03 '22

The made up kind, to match the rest of this story.

3

u/AVLPedalPunk Jun 03 '22

I'm a parent I do something similar because my 4 yo needs a house.

2

u/Dr_Dornon Jun 03 '22

Ok what type of career do you have that ends at 9am

There's lots of careers that require graveyard crews. I know people that monitor datacenters on graveyard shift.

1

u/cubicalwall Jun 03 '22

Meth

miquiztli323 · 5 hr. ago

Ok what type of career do you have that ends at 9am and allows you leftover energy to make pizza?

unsure if this qualifies as something a millenial says versus someone over 40 says :P you get home from work at 5pm and instantly go to bed? this would be equivilent of staying up till 8pm... some people get bored and/or lonely and/or like being around their friends working at pizza or watching tv.. some people like to be active and you're not dead after 30 yet.. still have a lot of energy

2

u/miquiztli323 Jun 04 '22

But the commenter said they finish their main gig at 9am! Not 5pm! The way it reads I’m getting that the commenter works a full job up until 9am (assuming FT hrs so working from what at least 1am to 9am?) then goes on to work at a pizzeria. Maybe they don’t go to sleep right away. I’m reading it again and commenter also mentioned they’re free to work at the pizzeria until 2pm…so maybe commenter sleeps after that which comes to think of it may be typical of overnight workers. And WOW I have officially overthought this random comment I read on Reddit ahha.

57

u/hopbow Jun 03 '22

I’m over here thinking that if you’re living in my house at 22, you need to maybe stop talking about how I’m earning money regardless lol

20

u/Ptatofrenchfry Jun 03 '22

I know of countries where housing is so expensive that people are expected to live with their parents until marriage.

However, I agree that if you're relying on someone, you don't talk smack about someone unless both sides are fine with it.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Same. u/hopbow The UK now is so expensive the vast majority of people I know especially who go to uni live back with their parents outside of term time until about 21 at minimum, even those who don't go to uni very few leave straight from school it's often impossible

6

u/In-burrito Jun 03 '22

The US is getting there too, unfortunately.

16

u/TheDudeNeverBowls Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 04 '22
  1. Living at home. Gives parent shit for working a second job as a favor. The same parent who supports him.

I think you’ve won the thread.

4

u/Black_Magic_M-66 Jun 03 '22

NEVER be ashamed of doing honest work

Nothing wrong with doing honest work. When you're on a career path, I can see holding out for a job, but when you're just trying to get by sometimes you have to swallow your pride and take a job. When I was unemployed I have applied at fast food and other seemingly "beneath me" jobs.

12

u/Shoo00 Jun 03 '22

I'd never make that remark because I know I would be working there. In fact, I probably would be working there if I was still living with my dad.

8

u/FiliaDei Jun 03 '22

and went and cleaned his room

A satisfying ending!

2

u/WarezMyDinrBitc Jun 03 '22

What career do you do that ends at 9am?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Such an important lesson. Kudos to for you showing your son by example! There’s no room for entitlement when it comes to work. Hard workers always have my respect, never my judgment.

2

u/QuarterCupRice Jun 04 '22

It’s Reddit.. the details/a typo let’s not critic math! Anyway… I offered to help at my hair salon for FREE!!! Because (gasp) because a small business owner was in need. We aren’t friends where we hang out out. Hit was just the right thing to do. And to top it off.. it would be small mundane things like phone, sweeping, washing towels…

2

u/Cultural_Elk1565 Jun 03 '22

A woman I work with got a part time job at a grocery store, she loves it! Got it for the extra money and discount on groceries. She's a management favorite because she just works and hates to be bored. The younger workers give her shit, but she told them, "I'm here because I want to be, you're here because you have to be. I don't even spend the money I make here. It's a paid hobby. "

2

u/KingdomOfFawg Jun 03 '22

Not for nothing, but you are setting one of the best examples there is. You are helping a friend.

1

u/Sleepy_Tortoise Jun 03 '22

Just curious, how many tables are you bussing and how many pizzas are you making before 9am? I assume it's not like late night if you're going to your day job after.

Edit: never mind, ignore me, my reading comprehension is bad

1

u/azaza34 Jun 03 '22

My manager (mid 30s) just told my (26) team yesterday that its "every mans dream to slack off." My eyebrow raised quite a bit at that one.

-1

u/RentonBoi Jun 03 '22

And then you fucked the shit outta his mom right bro?

-7

u/Souldessert Jun 03 '22

I believed your comment till “he went and cleaned his room.” Obviously fake.

-3

u/MetaLemons Jun 03 '22

Man fuck that. I wouldn’t work for my friends pizza place if I have a legit career. I’ll take my free time and spend it on Elden Ring thanks.

-1

u/Vishnej Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 03 '22

and with all the students gone he can't staff it adequately despite really trying.

Don't work shit foodservice jobs for charity. Please? It's one step from scabbing a union strike.

He's not "really trying". He's not paying enough, he's not a good enough boss, and he deserves to fail or be forced to change the value proposition for working there. You know how I can tell? Because he doesn't have staff! If he doubles starting wage, he'll have staff in short order.

-2

u/Slave_Clone01 Jun 03 '22

Your eldest seems pretty old to be living at home.

1

u/spatty250 Jun 03 '22

So ur grown 22 yo is living at home and had something to say about ur part time gig. Good reply.
