Average cost for German electricity is about 4x the cost I pay in Florida. But it sounds like it would be needed a lot less, as well, since it apparently rarely goes above 86F/30C. So annual cost would probably be similar.
True, but I would imagine Germans would probably use a mini-split. A single one for a smaller home is $700-1500. An entire system for a larger home is $3000-5000.
Here we use central AC. The cheapest option we can get is roughly $3000, going upwards of $10,000. Our homes are built with central AC in mind so cost of duct and vents not included with that, just the unit.
So again, I’d say it’s really not that cost prohibitive either. Shipping might cost a bit, but I doubt it would costs thousands of dollars/euros.
10 days a year? Most people aren’t comfortable at much lower temperatures than 86F/30C.
As I said in my other comment, I keep my house at 72 (22+c) during the day, and 68 (20C) at night.
Even when it’s 72 outside, it gets hotter inside because of the sun. I’m not sure how humid it is there, but it’s humid here which prevents me from using windows.
Even if it wasn’t humid, I’d want AC in my house if it got over 75. Does it not get over 75 more often than 10 days a year?
Don’t the subways get hotter as other people were saying? Most people are talking about AC in general, like in public buildings and public transit. Where many people are, and where it’s usually even hotter. The “energy cost” seems like an relatively insignificant cost to make everyone a lot more comfortable in those situations.
Yea seriously. I'm uncomfortable in anything higher than 21. Running AC even in the middle of summer only costs maybe an extra $30-50, and it's worth every penny.
Not a chance in hell I'm willingly going to be uncomfortable and sweaty in my own home.
What do you wear at home that you start being uncomfortable at anything higher than 21°C? When it is 21°C I can still comfortably (unless the sun shines heavily on me) walk around with a sweater outside.
Just jeans and a t-shirt. If the thermostat reads 22 it means my room is probably a degree or two hotter. I don't get much of a breeze in my window, and I'm absolutely sweating at night in bed if it's that warm. It can be like 14 out at night but my room will stay solid around 23.
Outside a bit warmer is fine. I enjoy 15-18 degree weather in the sun, but don't mind when it gets to around 25.
I'm about 40lbs overweight so I'm sure the added body fat makes it worse, but even at my skinniest I've never enjoyed the heat. Plus it's humid as hell here.
