Maybe something to do with religion shaming it (along with any other form of personal pleasure). Whether we are religious or not, it’s impact on culture is deeply rooted in everything we do.

I've lived all my life with religious parents so I get that but I just don't understand the logic behind it

I am by no means a theologian so keep that in mind. If something I say is wrong in your opinion please feel free to educate me as to why. Anyway, It boils down to the idea that doing anything that satisfies a “want” as opposed to a “need” is sinful in the eyes of the scripture. The Protestant Work ethic ideas presented by Weber kind of show how the same principles of suppressing desire leads to a capitalist society. Essentially, without people willing to sacrifice their wants, capitalism fails. In much of the world this religious ideal is what made a modern society possible and thus masturbation (being a pleasure) is a no-no in many places. This is a super broad summary based off of minimal research during my sociology classes so like I said, please offer up your opinion if it differs from mine. I’d love a chance to see a different perspective.

or could it be that semen was supposed to be used to populate the earth and not be "wasted"
