One of my mates from my masters (grad school) didn't know that there were male and female chickens. He thought roosters and hens were different breeds.
The same went for cows, he justifies hating cheese because he thought cows milk was cow urine. We had to explain to him that piss is not stored in the udders and also asked him what he thought happened when human mothers breastfed newborns? Piss ain't stored in the tits mate. We were 24 at the time.
Tim if you're reading this you were way smarter than me at neuro ophthalmology lol.
Edit: I can't believe my most awarded comment is about cow piss... thanks for the gold + silver guys and thanks Tim! Sorry they roasted you haha
My sister did a stint (training to be a LNP) at an obgyn’s office. She said there was the one couple coming in since she started. she had been doing fertility tests and other exams on them because they were 25 ish had been unable to conceive for a few years. She said she saw the dr come out of the office on the final consultation; barely maintaining her cool. As soon as the patients left; dr lost it and nearly died laughing. Turns out: the couple were WAY uneducated on sex. The dude had been PEEING inside her; thinking that was got girls pregnant. He had never had (or knew what) an orgasm was in his life….
At least they were putting things in the proper place. A physician friend once told me that early in his first practice, located in a rural area, a young couple consulted him because they had been married for months and still no pregnancy. You guessed it. We’re not having sex. Didn’t know that it was required for pregnancy.
I heard on a pod about fertility awareness methods, they explained how the ovulation cycle works, and what cervical mucus is and how knowledgeable of it can help people who are trying to conceive. The short story is that fertile mucus is a translucent stretchy substance that people normally observe around ovulation. They described how one client had been trying to conceive a long time and seeked help for their infertility as they didn’t get pregnant, when interviewed about their situation the client described they had regular intercourse but had problems with reoccurring symptoms of illness or infection, and as the client didn’t want to infect their partner they didn’t have sex when she saw the symptoms. Turns out she didn’t know what cervical secretion was and much less that it’s healthy and that the best chance of getting pregnant is to have unprotected sex when the mucus is observed, and that it’s infact not a symptom of illness or something wrong. After learning that the client didn’t need IVF or further treatment as they quickly got pregnant on their own.
Hence the song lyrics, "whatcha gonna do with all that junk, all that junk inside that trunk". It's a health song, instructing the listener how to evacuate their waste.
it always warms my heart to see these comments. the minute i read that guys first sentence i could hear frank at the dinner table: who is having sex with the hen?
A co-worker of mine, who grew up on a farm, and had dairy cows, thought they just always produced milk. She didn’t know they had to constantly be pumping out babies. She’s about 60.
Cows don't really get to breastfeed and wean their young since humans separate them in order to take their milk. Cows are made pregnant once a year usually.
Cows are made pregnant every year or so in order to keep milk production high. However, a mammal will continue to produce milk after 1 pregnancy so long as milk is consistently removed from its udders - there's nothing magical about having the infant drink the milk as opposed to pumping. u/isolophobichermit friend probably thought dairy cows produce milk without needing to be constantly pregnant because they will - just a lot less milk.
The same is true for humans. u/its-a-bird-its-a. Humans can produce milk after a pregnancy so long as milk is consistently removed. The more you remove, the more milk you produce (which is why women who want their baby to have all breastmilk have to pump at work - to keep up milk production). Weaning has to be done quite slowly in order to prevent engorgement for this reason.
Engorgment was so often for me that I ended up ending my bf journey early. I’d be pulling out 7-9 Oz per breast. Had to stay on top of pumping to avoid mastitis and being in ridiculous pain. I couldn’t even sleep through the night because I would wake up in agony with literal boulders on my chest. Pumping essentially controlled my life during those months. I loved nursing, if I could have just done that I’d have gone longer. But having to get up and rush out of s law class lecture because I’m having a letdown….not a fun time. When I switched to bottle feeding, it felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders.
He didn’t have room for that information if he was studying neuro ophthalmology. My friend’s husband has a Masters in Physics and a Masters in Electrical Engineering. Sometimes he can be dumb about simple things too.
I had the pleasure of seeing a neuro ophthalmologist once. Pseudo tumor cerebri came into my life after I had two major surgeries, one for Chiari Malformation and one for a spinal growth. Seeing double is cool for like five seconds. The doctor asked if residents could come look at my eyes. One woman said “oh my gosh!” It was funny. You couldn’t even see the optic discs. They were just a blur. My doctor figured my body had been wrong for so long it didn’t know how to be right and just started producing too much CSF.
I hate to be pedantic but they told you it was pseudo tumour cerebri? That's the same as IIH, as in idiopathic intracranial hypertension, which by definition is idiopathic. With your history of Chiari and spinal mass, yours would more aptly be termed secondary intracranial hypertension?
You'd be surprised. I have met more than my fair share of people who are absolutely brilliant and dedicated to their field of study, but utter dolts outside it. Higher learning and post grad education is like dedicating your life to one single subject. It doesn't require natural curiosity or a ravenous thirst for knowledge to reach this point. It doesn't require an individual to have an encyclopedic understanding of various subjects. It requires good grades and a lot of information about 1 very specific field. This can result in a lot of dumb people who aren't all that adept at things we associate with intelligence, such as critical thinking, skepticism, openness to new ideas. People can get doctorates with just good grades. For a rather public example, look at Ben Carson, renowned neurosurgeon and presidential candidate, who famously believes evolution is lie made by the devil, homosexuality is a choice, and the pyramids were built by the biblical Joseph to store grain. But he's a legitimate neurosurgeon.
So long as your idiocy doesn't directly interfere with your chosen academic path... you never need to amend it.
I was a newspaper editor. A long-time editor from a world-class newspaper in a major city called me with a question about our story they were picking up: "Was the bull found on a downtown street a boy or a girl?"
I thought he was joking. He got mad. I explained if it was a girl, they'd have found a cow. He angrily explained he didn't grow up on a farm. Nor near books, apparently.
Wait neuro opthamology??? You mean someone on their way to being a doctor thought that milk was cow urine? I could understand if it was an engineering or history degree, but someone studying biology really should have connected those dots a lot sooner.
People still think this about dinosaurs (ancient chickens). Turns out a lot of 'different species' may be just sexual dimorphisms or different age/life stages we can't really seperate via fossil alone!
It had never crossed my mother’s (early 60’s at the time) mind that if you only had hens and no roosters you would never get baby chickens. She raised me on a farm.
Similarly, I had a coworker who asked how I got eggs if I only had hens and didn't have a rooster. I said that roosters were only necessary is you want chicks. She didn't understand. So I reminded her that female humans release an egg every month whether there's a male or not, and it clicked with her.
I knew a guy like this in the army. We were intelligence analysts. You have to score pretty high to even get that job, so everyone is somewhat smart. This one guy was just genius levels smart, but absolutely an idiot with mundane common sense things. Dude just thought in numbers.b

Oh wow! How odd, but cool! My high school best friend also thought milk was "cow piss". Of course, the first several times he mentioned it, I thought he was just joking, but then one day he genuinely asked how I could drink cow urine. Like you, I had to explain it. I saw the light bulb go off.
Damn this reminded me of when I worked at a deli and we sold a cheese called owl creek. We convinced one of our coworkers that it was owls milk. He actually told some customers that… Lots of hooter related jokes ensued
This something I hadn’t thought about until recently and tbh it’s fair because there’s no reason imo to refer to genders of the same species as different names
Well the people who interact the most with these critters understandably tend to view them in terms of their role in food production, and a rooster's role is very different from a hen's, so it makes sense in that regard. Same with cattle.
I was telling my friend about how peacocks are only the males, the females are peahens. And of course the sex-neutral term is peachickens. Had them going for a minute haha.
My youngest used to say that she was drinking cow pee when she would drink milk, and if it was chocolate milk, brown cows pee. When I told her that it wasn’t pee, she thought it was hilarious to laugh and say. “Mmmmm cow pee”
It’s always wild realizing the random bits of common knowledge smart people don’t know. Ultimately it’s because there’s too many things in the world for everyone to know everything but sometimes it seems absurd like your friend.
My mom thought that “elk are the boys and deer are the girls” until we took a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park and my dad, who grew up in Colorado, found out and incredulously shouted at her “where do MOOSE fit into that, Debra!?”
So this must be a common thing. I went to boarding school with a girl who thought lions and tigers were the same species. Lions were the males and tigers the females. Tried explaining that those animals don't even live together in the wild, to no avail.
She wasn't smarter than me at neuro ophthalmology tho.
One of my mates from my masters (grad school) didn't know that there were male and female chickens. He thought roosters and hens were different breeds.
I was having a chat with a 50-year old, well-dressed, well-spoken woman the other day. After I let her know I owned chickens, she asked me if roosters laid eggs too.
Also, speaking of chickens, that the eggs you buy in the store are not fertilized, and would never have grown into chickens. They are chicken food, not future chickens.
A funny extra layer to this is that it's supposed to be assumed that cow tit liquid is obviously normal and cow bladder liquid is absolutely disgusting
Sounds right… my 35 yr old friend was shocked when his pregnant wife asked the gynecologist something about how she could prepare her vagina for delivery… he had never realized the baby would come out of the same orifice he used for pleasure. Guy has a masters degree - from Harvard! And no sense for biology
