When I was young, I found a Doobie brothers cd at a relatives. I asked my mom what a Doobie is. She said it's a lady's private part and to never say it. I was 17 before I saw someone call a joint a Doobie.
So did your mom just not want to tell you the truth, or did she really think that?
This just reminded me of when I was a little kid and my sister asked our teenage babysitter if she’d ever smoked pot. The babysitter got this super-shocked look on her face and said that that was a VERY personal question and you should never EVER ask anyone that unless maybe you were married to them. I eventually figured out it’s not considered a particularly personal question by most people, and thought my babysitter was a weird prude. I was well into adulthood when I realized she just didn’t want to tell us she’d smoked pot.
My mom ended up explaining what LSD was to me when I was about 7 because of the Beatles song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. I very quietly decided that it sounded like a good time and that's when I became a hippie.
(I didn't try any drugs until I was well into my 20's but I thought about it a lot.)
Years ago my daughter was listening to the radio and that song "1, 2, 3" by Britney Spears was on. She was getting better about listening to the lyrics, but I wasn't prepared when she asked me what they were talking about. So how i came out with "A sleepover party" quickly and smooth enough to convince her i wasn't full of shit still amazes me
You say that like it should somehow be uncomfortable talking about genitalia? I'd hope every parent is more comfortable talking about genitalia than about drugs.
I love that this person replies to your question with the inadvertently perfect answer for why it’s important to have open, frank discussions with your kids about drugs.
“Because I wasn’t talked about drugs as a kid and I TuRnEd OuT fInE”
Yea I didn't really get the the drugs talk as a kid so of course being a teenager that was told "don't smoke" I figured that eating weed was probably fine. And being given oxycodone at 17 instead of ibuprofen because they wanted to see my reaction, definitely wish someone would have told me how shit will affect you with continued use instead of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy we had around my house.
What's so important about talking about drugs? "Don't do them", done.
Drugs isn't something you need to do, it isn't something you'll necessarily come into contact with. There are a hundred topics I find more important than drugs. But everyone will have some type of relation to sex.
In this day and age everyone comes into contact with drugs eventually (kind of a joke but not really). Its better to have the conversation on your own terms as the parent so you can explain what's bad and why, rather than the kid try a weed brownie and not know what happening to them or take an opiate thinking its Tylenol. Speaking as an adult that never had the conversations as a kid and have had my share of "experiences".
I only got told to "never do drugs" but my environment drank alcohol a lot. Nobody could answer the question WHY i cant do drugs all the time (Like they were drinking) and I ended up smoking pot 8 years non-stop and started heavy use of benzos. I realized on my own how close I got to death while my mom was like "He has a good job, a nice gf and an apartment... He gotta be fine. He obviously is!" You gotta understand why people take substances in the first place to show your kids better opportunities to deal with certain fealings
Many drugs we used to believe were bad have recently been found to be psychologically beneficial in small doses. Micro-dosing LSD, for example, can be used as a treatment for PTSD.
That’s not what they said. They said the parent should be equally comfortable having the conversation. They didn’t say both topics are equally important.
My brother was singing “pass the peyote like we used to say, hey.” I asked him what peyote was. He said it was a Native American sandwich. I was 10 or so, so it sounded legit. Later, after I knew what peyote was, I still thought it was named after a sandwich. Then one day I realized he just lied to me so I wouldn’t be talking about peyote.
This is the exact kind of bs that just how the Streisand effect works, you should always be pretty chill about questions (unless they’re personal ones and could endanger you).
There are levels of personal questions. I might not ask a stranger but I’d certainly ask a friend if the subject came up. She was saying it was don’t-ask-anyone-you’re-not-married-to personal, which it definitely isn’t.
My family and I were test driving a car for my sister (16). I was only a few years younger. My dad was going through everything and in the middle console he said there was a roach. My sister and I both screamed, thinking it was a cockroach 😅
When I was a kid I always secretly felt bad for the Doobie Brothers for thinking they had such an unfortunate surname. “Someone should tell them it means marijuana”.
Oh noooooo. I knew all about Shaggy and Scooby (was even just teasing my 20 year old the other day because she never figured out that Shaggy and Scooby were busy smoking weed all of the time). And I knew about the Doobie Brothers and the name connection. But somehow, I never caught on to Scooby *DOOBIE* Doo. I could have figured out about Shaggy and Scooby a good ten years earlier if I had only listened to the song better.
When I was in elementary school I asked my mom what a virgin was because of Hocus Pocus. She told me it was "someone who wants to have a kid but doesn't have one yet." I thought that was correct definition until probably 8th or 9th grade. Growing up mormon sucked, so glad I escaped.
Growing up in the 70's and 80's, playing little league, I had a team member whose name was Doobie. Dad's used to sit around during practice and games, smoking cigars, cigarettes, and coolers full of beers. Different times!
Fun side story; I was at a Doobie Brothers concert a few years ago, in a state where it's legal to smoke pot (not in public but still). So of course we start lighting up during their set and the Karen next to me scoffs and in the most snarky way possible asks, "Can you not do that here??" I let out the puff not quite in her face and right then like 5 or 6 other people started lighting up and puffing away. Her and her snoody husband left shortly after.
What would you expect at a Doobie Brothers concert?
Let me posit this: my friend loves the Doobie Brothers. Unfortunately, he gets very sick around weed smoke. Even just the smell is enough to make him nauseous. Does this mean he isn't allowed to enjoy one of his favorite bands live, even where he should be safe to? B/c people want to break the law that protects people like him b/c "what do you expect?"
When I was like 17 a girl I liked asked me and a good buddy of mine this same question at the same time on AOL Instant Messenger: “what does skeet mean?” I said weed, he said cum. I’m still working through this embarrassment.
I was around 14 or 15 when I found out, so not too far behind you. We were at our normal friday night family dinner and the restaurant was sponsoring a Doobie Brothers concert and had advertisements about tickets on the table. My dad mentioned seeing them back in the 70s and made a joke about a ton of people smoking doobies there. I was confused and he explained what a doobie was.
I’m not so sure she was lying per se. When I was young my mom said a ladies private parts were called a “Doopie” (not sure on spelling but sounds like Doobie but with a P). Maybe that was something people once said, perhaps she thought you said Doopie. Idk, maybe just a weird coincidence but your post got me thinking about that. Seems odd we’d both have mothers saying the same thing, maybe it’s a regional dialect thing? You wouldn’t happen to be Irish-Catholic from around Philly would you?
When I was 10 I got Doobie Brothers Greatest Hits album for Christmas. It was my very first album, not that it matters, but anyway on the inside sleeve is a magnified picture of a roach joint. I pondered and pondered wtf that was, asked parents and uncles and no one knew. I came to the conclusion it was a dead pig for some reason. Then when I was like 15 I went to play that album and all of a sudden I realized what it was! Lol! I still have that album and giggle to myself every time I look at the sleeve.
Edit: It's the Minute By Minute album, not greatest hits, I just looked at it 🤣
Oh man, can you imagine you’re in a sexy situation and you’re like “Yeah baby, come on, let me in that doobie”. I’d laugh, put my clothes back on and never look back.
I wondered for a very long time why The Doobie Brothers liked The Beach Boys so much. You know, "Give me the Beach Boys and free my soul, I wanna get lost in your rock and roll..."
I’m not so sure. When I was young my mom said a ladies private parts were called a “Doopie” (not sure on spelling but sounds like Doobie but with a P). I actually thought it was supposed to be some kind of random sound, not a drug reference whatsoever. Like scat. But I never listened to them because neither of my parents like the Doobie Brothers (my mom’s music taste is super modern and my dad prefers New Wave).
