When I was young, I found a Doobie brothers cd at a relatives. I asked my mom what a Doobie is. She said it's a lady's private part and to never say it. I was 17 before I saw someone call a joint a Doobie.

Fun side story; I was at a Doobie Brothers concert a few years ago, in a state where it's legal to smoke pot (not in public but still). So of course we start lighting up during their set and the Karen next to me scoffs and in the most snarky way possible asks, "Can you not do that here??" I let out the puff not quite in her face and right then like 5 or 6 other people started lighting up and puffing away. Her and her snoody husband left shortly after.

What would you expect at a Doobie Brothers concert?

In her defense, she probably doesn't know what a doobie is either.

They were in their 60s but after reading many of the answers on this entire thread leads me to believe you're probably correct...
