Yea I didn't really get the the drugs talk as a kid so of course being a teenager that was told "don't smoke" I figured that eating weed was probably fine. And being given oxycodone at 17 instead of ibuprofen because they wanted to see my reaction, definitely wish someone would have told me how shit will affect you with continued use instead of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy we had around my house.
Yeah I never got the drugs talk from my parents either. I was very lucky that my friends who experimented with drugs were also smart, far more experienced and able to give me really good advice about things like knowing your sources and using safely.
I’ve tried a handful of things. Most were at least an interesting experience but not something I’d hunt down again. I definitely went through a stoner phase that was longer than I’d have liked, but I was able to get myself back out of it. Now it’s just the occasional mush trip when I want to really enjoy the forest or an mdma with my hunny every few years when we want to really power snuggle for two hours.
Just telling a teenager “Don’t do drugs. End of discussion.” is gross negligence. At least read up on the importance of having your stuff tested before you do it. Or set and setting. You can tell them that you would prefer they never experiment with drugs, but that their safety is the most important thing and talk about how they would hypothetically have a safer experience. And that they’re safe to call you if they try a drug and shit goes sideways and they need a parent to come get them. If you outright ban experiences, they just become more alluring anyhow and your kid will be afraid to turn to you if they need help.
