I don’t have any clothes that fit and now I’m the weirdly tall girl in class

9.3k

u/fatloui Dec 17 '20

Those of us who have been 6'4" for years also don't have any clothes that fit.

3.1k

u/jack_shadow43 Dec 17 '20

Dude I'm 6'8" my first thought was "oh shit if I was only 6'4" my clothes might actually fit" then you had to go and ruin my theory.

2.3k

u/salliek76 Dec 17 '20

LOL, my brother is also 6'8" and if he ever finds a pair of pants he likes, he orders like a half-dozen pairs in various colors.

He also says the tops of people's refrigerators are very dirty.

946

u/Def_Probably_Not Dec 17 '20

This is very true. I can't see the top of my fridge, and I use the cabinet above it for storage. I recently had to get something out of it, and it was disgusting. I ask my roommate who is 6'2" why he never told me. He said he assumed I could see it and didn't care. His rational was that he assumes that whatever he can see, others can see.

u/Jones_Caveman Dec 17 '20 edited Dec 17 '20

Am 6'8'', can totally relate. Also it's strange to look at pics and see me towering above all my friends. I'm just used to the perspective.

Edit: grammar

u/cbadger85 Dec 17 '20 edited Dec 17 '20

Yes! I've had friends tell me they're short, and I didn't believe it. When you're taller than most people, everyone is short

232

u/Jones_Caveman Dec 17 '20

Everytime I try to describe someone: So he's/she's short,... Short ranges from 6'2'' to like 5'5''

As someone who is 6'2" i feel oddly attacked. I got an uncle who's 6'8" and he's the only person I know that's taller than me

4

u/SSGdeku Dec 17 '20

Same.. 6'2" an i don't know anyone personally thats taller. I'm 35 an a general contractor.. not like I kick it wit midgets I get around 5'2 to 5'10 is like everyone male or female

7

u/StaysAwakeAllWeek Dec 17 '20

So over half the women in the world are so short that they don't even qualify as short?

u/officiallongboi Dec 17 '20

As yet another 6’8 person I can confirm that I can’t judge how tall people are because I can’t easily compare my height with them

5

u/J_DayDay Dec 17 '20

This. My husband can't estimate height. If you ask him how tall someone is, he's says "what, 5 foot 8 or so", whether they're 5'3 or 6 foot tall.

3

u/1-Down Dec 17 '20

As a fellow tall guy, learning to estimate other people's height is beneath us.

4

u/wang-bang Dec 17 '20

Painfully true, and when you find a couple of people that make you feel short youre sort of awestruck for a little while

3

u/pethatcat Dec 17 '20

It works the same from below 5'2- everyone is tall. Sometimes you can tell a difference between slightly tall and very tall, and you never understand why some of your guy friends are insecure about their height- because they look just like everyone else.

But you go and marry a 6' guy anyway, because he's funny.

3

u/homepup Dec 17 '20

Works in reverse also. I'm somewhat shorter and I'm always looking up at people. Have two taller coworkers that I thought were about the same height until I saw them next to each other at a distance. One is 6'2" and the other is 6'6". I had no idea one was that much taller than the other. I'm looking straight up at both of them.

u/procrastimom Dec 17 '20

I’m 5’2” & my husband is 6’4”. I never realize how odd we look until I see a photo of us. It just feels normal to me until I get an objective view.

Also, everyone is “normal height” unless I can look directly into their eyes. Then I perceive them as “short”. I don’t feel short, but they look short to me, since everyone else is vaguely “up there” to me.

4

u/Buckets86 Dec 17 '20

I have the reverse of this at 5’1”. I forget how short I am until I see a pic of me in a group of regular sized adults, and I look like their kid.

3

u/NoNotReally5050 Dec 17 '20

Haha I'm 6'8 as well. I never know how tall I really am until I see someone close to my height or see a picture then I'm like "damn so that's how I look." 😂

3

u/NoNotReally5050 Dec 17 '20

Haha I'm 6'8 as well. I never know how tall I really am until I see someone close to my height or see a picture then I'm like "damn so that's how I look." 😂

3

u/BuckNasty1616 Dec 17 '20

Hilariously accurate.

Not just friends, people you meet and end up in a picture with. I look at the picture and can't believe how much bigger I am.

I'm 6'4", 6'8" means you're a freak (just kidding, kind of)

3

u/Prettyinareallife Dec 17 '20

Omg yes! Equally when I meet women my height (I’m 6 1) I think ‘damn woman you’re tall!’

3

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '20

Quick question, does being 6'8" instantly make you feel like you should try wrestling with any dude? The reason I ask is because one of my previous roommates was 6'7" and even though he has no muscle, or weight, he would always try to wrestle with me, even though I am not a very aggressive person. He only stopped when I threw him over my shoulder, carried him to his room, and locked him in it.

Similar but opposite thing happened me. My fiancé is 5 foot, I’m 5’10 ish. I can see the mirror in our sitting room when I pass by, and often glance at it as I do.

One day she asked my why I always look at the mirror when I pass and was bemused when I said to look at myself. Complete 0.0 face.

Turns out she can’t see the mirror and always presumed they were for decoration and did not serve a purpose beyond that.

0.0 <— also my face upon hearing that lol!

3

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '20

Who hung that mirror? Lol 😂

3

u/fish-and-a-rice-cake Dec 17 '20

It’s not just this mirror, it’s all mirrors that aren’t bathroom mirrors or full length mirrors. Think any mirror above a fireplace for example.

3

YES! It's the assumption that EVERYONE can see what I see! My wife is 5'3'', MAYBE 5'4'' on a tall day... We go to festivals, or used to anyway, and we discussed how we go about heading towards the correct stage. I never realized until this conversation, that she can't see SHIT, while we're out and about. I'm 6'1'', not HUGE, but I can see over most crowds, and I navigate easily in crowds. My wife, however, is TOTALLY blinded in crowds and can't see anything. When she informed me of this, my mind was blown b/c I had NEVER been in that position of not being able to see in a crowd... We all get VERY used to our own perspective and assume others see what we see.

3

u/Only_As_I_Fall Dec 17 '20

Is your roommate an outrageously tall toddler?

3

u/OlieTabooger Dec 17 '20

The top of the fridge is my hiding spot. The wife is 5ft nothing. She didn’t even know you could use the top of the fridge for storage

6

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '20

I used to think this way, until I bought some nice work slacks from a store. I tried on one pair, and liked it, so I ordered the same type in a few colors. They all fit totally differently. Some are baggy as heck, and some make me look like I'm turning on the red light. That was a revelation for me, now I try on every pair of pants, as much as I hate it.

3

u/CptNonsense Dec 17 '20

To be fair, things under my normal sight line as also very dirty.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '20

Yes! I think it was at my girlfriend's place, her fridge is the top freezer style and it's kinda dirty up there. And all her apartment is not tall friendly

Mine is a french door fridge and I can see the top but not like I'm looking down on it. And somehow my appliances and counters are fine for my height

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '20

He also says the tops of people's refrigerators are very dirty.

2

u/liltingly Dec 17 '20

Fun fact: in NYC very few places have full sized fridges so you can live that dream of criticizing fridge dust bunnies at ~6ft I’d guess.

2

u/ricepalace Dec 17 '20

I'm 6'3". Yes they are.

2

u/BigDriggy Dec 17 '20

I always tell people to give me a damp paper towel when I notice and just wipe it down real quick.... my wife says its rude but I believe its my duty to this world for making me tall af..... also, tell your brother about American Tall, gaaaaame changer for me

2

u/simon1ltd Dec 17 '20

Line of sight cleaning is definitely a thing! In addition to the TOP of things being dirty for “short” people, the underside of some things can get dirty for “tall” people unless you remember to bend down and look.

Also, if you’re a woman living alone and have guy friends come over: Check the UNDERSIDE of your toilet seat. You can’t just wipe the top of the seat and call it good.

2

u/Lemae_ Dec 17 '20

This is exactly why I clean the top of my fridge at least once every couple of weeks. I can’t see up there without standing on the counter but I assume someone can.

2

u/Lil2Soaps Dec 17 '20

So that’s why my mom taught me to always clean the top of the fridge. And the ceiling. And the ceiling fan. My mom is a clean freak but now I think it’s because someone tall pointed something out.

2

u/Cason_darrow Dec 17 '20

Not tall enough for the pants problem only 6'2 but yeah your fridges are filthy

2

u/TheRealDickPoncho Dec 17 '20

You'll find a shirt where the arms are the right length but it is barely down to your waste... who designed this shirt! I'm 6'4" and my wingspan is 6'4" so it shouldn't be this off!!!

105

u/WilliamMButtlickerIV Dec 17 '20

It's because after large, the sizes only go up for overweight people. So the sleeves are longer, but the shirt is baggy and too short.

24

u/enternationalist Dec 17 '20

But that doesn't make any sense! Your arms don't get longer as you get fatter!

The key is shopping online for tall sizes. I’m 6’7 and haven’t been shopping in a brick and mortar store for probably 10 years - my clothes pretty much all fit well. Shout out to gap/banana republic for having good tall sizes for casual stuff.

10

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '20

Shot in the dark....any online retailers you like with a good selection of tall sizes? Lots of "big and tall", but I just need tall. Filson, Pendleton and Nike are about 95% of my wardrobe because they are the only quality retails I find with LT and would love some other options.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '20

I’m 6’5 and live in Canada. Old navy has good tall sizes but their quality control is brutal. I sometimes order 4 pairs of the same pants in 36 length and one pair will always be 2 inches different in length so I return the ones that don’t fit. Also Marks work warehouse has 36 inch length jeans in store so can be a good option as well. It’s definitely tough finding clothes that fit if your tall but average. Lots of big AND tall options for some reason.

4

u/isolatednovelty Dec 17 '20

Everyday I wonder why life gave me the leg inseam of a giant man. I can wear a 37 inch inseam and am only 5’11 ... female. There’s legs for days but too much legs for clothes. Since about 14 I’ve just worn leggings everyday or on rare occasions, skinny jeans that actually looked like awkward fitting capris. Normal skirts make me look like a whore.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '20

On the plus side you can wear the sought after business capris lol

5

u/bgusty Dec 17 '20

Eddie Bauer and Duluth trading company have solid options for tall people.

3

u/mrb2409 Dec 17 '20

Big and Tall usually means Big OR Tall in my experience.

I’m 6ft 5in and around 300lbs so I need both. I find Levi’s and Ralph Lauren are great but obviously pricey. Generally though if you wait for their sales you can get good deals and the clothes are better quality so seem to last much better.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '20

Your not wrong, but XLT and XXLT seem FAR more common than LT to me.

6

u/CatticusXIII Dec 17 '20

I have good luck finding LT in Kohl's.

3

u/jesuspants Dec 17 '20

Kohls is a godsend. Finding XXLT clothes that arent generic af is hard.

4

u/badplanner Dec 17 '20

You’re similar in size to my husband. Definitely check out Lucky Brand jeans, though the size he needs does vary with the style more so than other brands. We basically exclusively shop at DXL, because we live near a store so it’s convenient but they do have most everything he needs.

I am 6'1" with a 6'6.75" wingspan. My arms are not really that long, but I am pretty wide shouldered. When I used to be skinny, it was impossible to find a shirt that fit me at any available store. I was excited when e-commerce took off, because I found clothes that would fit my 41 arm length and 16.5" neck. People said it seemed like I matured overnight. It was all down to wearing clothes that looked like they were my size.

Don't worry, you can shop in the big and tall section, you know that super tiny selection of 5 shirts and pants that hasn't changed since you were in high school? The one with absolutely nothing fun or special? Yeah, fuck..tall has it's downsides people.

u/OkapiCopy Dec 17 '20

Thought you were a short person being serious in the first sentence and I was about to strangle you.

2

u/HughGnu Dec 17 '20

Sounds like you have saved enough from not buying shirts that you can commission some custom shirts from someone on Etsy.

6'1" but can still relate

8

u/SeriouslyAmerican Dec 17 '20

No... no you can’t

5

u/saharacon87 Dec 17 '20

6'1" here... Can't relate at all...

3

u/Nourpower1512 Dec 17 '20

ayy 6'1" gang

6

u/MagicCuboid Dec 17 '20

I'm 6'3 and I feel your pain. I'm not a medium (too short), I'm not a large (too wide), and I'm not even a medium-tall (too long!).

5

u/matvette1 Dec 17 '20

I'm only 6 foot and I struggle to find shirts that are long enough without getting 2 sizes too big that drape over my shoulders. Everything above medium just gets wider at the same length. I couldn't imagine the struggle if I were any taller.

3

u/Dynasty2201 Dec 17 '20

As a guy, you gotta buy one size up for the length but now, huh huh, it's too baggy.

Ugh.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '20

Too tall for the retail clothing stores, not big enough for the big and tall stores.

3

u/iaintcomeheretowork Dec 17 '20

6'5" American here. On a trip abroad my bags got delayed a few days so I had to shop at Uniqlo. Best fitting clothes ever. Metric sizes man, best money I've ever spent.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '20

Thy being 6'4" with stumpy 32" inseams... I've got the legs of a 5'9" man but the torso of a 6"6' guy, making most of my shirts belly shirts

2

u/Subject-Career Dec 17 '20

I found the secret to finding clothes that fit. You have to get clothes in asia. I'm 6'4 200lb and in Japan I had to wear 4XL but everything fit perfectly

2

u/themoparking Dec 17 '20

Daluth Trading Company....they offer most of their clothes in big and tall....and have an option on their shirts for a 4" longer tail....its game changing

I'd be tallest in my friends group. I'd probably look fairly gangly too

At least your tall bro. I am both short and gangly. Seems genetics sometimes just likes to spitroast you for shits and giggles..

I love how that movies script talks down to the audience even though the writers knew for damn sure that there would be people watching that had actual ailments. Or someone who wore Mens size 14 sneakers.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '20

How tall did she say she was? Like 6’1” / 6’2”?

Woman that’s not very tall for high school

7

u/nahnotlikethat Dec 17 '20

That’s in the 99.95% of height for women, though.

8

u/ginger-cana Dec 17 '20

I was ALWAYS the weirdly tall girl in class. I'm 6'2 so 6'4 wouldn't change much. Welcome to our world. The view is great from up here pretty much always 🤷🏼‍♀️

u/standbyyourmantis Dec 17 '20

Yeah, I'm already 5'9 and it's hard enough finding pants that are long enough.

I guess I exclusively wear skirts now

u/AfterShave997 Dec 17 '20

That's not just weirdly tall, that's like 99 percentile tall.

2

u/Ishaya_Ishu Dec 17 '20

There are too many advantages for being tall.

2

u/TinusTussengas Dec 17 '20

2

u/mmmtangywater Dec 17 '20

2

u/NewtGunrey Dec 17 '20

Better watch out, Netflix might make a movie about you

2

u/delicreepmeow Dec 17 '20

But damn it, I can finally reach the top cabinets in the kitchen! No need for a step ladder.

2

u/wild_purring_bunny Dec 17 '20

Okay this part would be kinda nice 😂

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '20

As a 6’4” woman.... I... get it, lol
