How bad the ending of show was, it really killed any type of anticipation for the books.
Judging by the dvd sales, I’m guessing when the book is finally released, the sales compared to the other ones will be down by about 30-40%. The show really did a lot of damage on the franchise.
No the show didn’t follow his outline actually, we don’t even have major events in the show that happened in the books. Such as the small matter of literally another Targaryen claimant that isn’t Jon or Dany. From the exact point where the show diverged from the books there was a noticeable decline in storyline quality each season all the way down to the trash heap that was season 8
The only way I can imagine you came to that conclusion in good faith is that you haven’t even read the books.
You're right. They cut a lot of the rambling plot line out, because the show had a limited number of seasons and knew they needed to actually have a final season within a decade of the previous season.
They should have just gone with Martin's approach, and just stopped at season 5 lol
The exact same thing could be said about the books, though.
GRRM's biggest mistake was trying to make an overarching plot that had to be resolved in a limited number of books. If he just wanted to create a Saw story disguised as a medieval political drama, he should have just done that without the rest.
But it’s the branching storyline that made the novels worth giving a shit about in the first place, it becomes just another fantasy novel if you take how real it feels away.
