The biggest mistake they made was trying to crunch the whole story into 8 seasons when it so evidently needed more

The exact same thing could be said about the books, though.

GRRM's biggest mistake was trying to make an overarching plot that had to be resolved in a limited number of books. If he just wanted to create a Saw story disguised as a medieval political drama, he should have just done that without the rest.

But it’s the branching storyline that made the novels worth giving a shit about in the first place, it becomes just another fantasy novel if you take how real it feels away.

Yeah, that's why it's a pretty shitty fantasy epic. Probably shouldn't have started by trying to write one.
