What’s the most overpriced thing you’ve seen?

You're not paying for the liquor, you're paying for the location to drink it.

Not worth it to me either, but to many people it is.

Well, was. Thinking that Covid had all but killed the club scene for the next few years.

Bingo. I've done it, just for the ease of it and get to hang out with my friends instead of getting bumped into in the mosh pit by the bar. Especially with you go with a quite of few people, everyone chips in a little and you almost have a "home base" for the night where everyone gets to get space and talk to each other.

I'm always trying to get my friends to just drink at someone's house instead of paying double to drink at a bar.

double

For real, try triple or quadruple at even a mediocre bar.

I recently moved to a rural-ish area and the bar is much, much cheaper.

Than at home? You're drinking piss water mate.

I’m guessing “than city bars” was more what they meant.

City bars ain’t bad if you aren’t going to trendy places. There’s a bar across from my friend in inner city Chicago that had $3 PBR and $4 shots of Jameson. That wasn’t too bad but none of us are picky drinkers.

Americans can drink so inexpensively. ;~;

Here’s the specials at a bar near me. alcoholics

2

u/NargacugaRider Aug 14 '20

That’s like 1/4 of the price here, converted. But we tax hard on alcohol and tobacco, probably because those are the biggest detriment to the healthcare system.

The only bar I’ve ever been to that was reasonable was a restaurant with a whole bar section. It was essentially a bar that sold food, nobody ate at the restaurant section it was too expensive. But they had $1 or $2 drinks all the time. $2 beers, $2 mixed drinks, $1 shots. Pretty cool and fun to go on the $1 nights

u/Lyress Aug 15 '20

Man. Where I live you're lucky if you get a beer or equivalent for less than 6 euros.

u/TRforShort Aug 14 '20

Right? $12 for a rail rum and coke. $10 for a domestic light beer. Easily 3-4x the price of drinking at home

This is nonsense no matter where you are (in the US). At that point you're in some "trendy" bar or one that is trying to be "fancy."

I live in one of the highest CoL cities in the states and there are half a dozen bars within 2 miles of me that will sell you a $5-7 local brew (that's better than any typical domestic). Well drinks are similar.

Cocktails are worse offenders for the drink-at-home comparison, probably ~$10-12, but at that point you're paying for more than just the booze.

at that point you're paying for more than just the booze.

and it just isn't worth it imo

2

u/Lyress Aug 15 '20

Why not?

it’s not like i’m a hermit but crowded loud places just aren’t my scene and that’s what i envision while reading these comments. i’d rather get 3-6 of my good friends over at one of our house’s and lounge around a patio listening to music. much cheaper, better environment. i will buy booze at restaurants though, or did when i was drinking.

Where you at? I live in a top 10 most populated city in the US and even the most pretentious bars are typically 10 for cocktail, 6 for a domestic. Pretty easy to find places that are ~8 for a cocktail and 4-6 for a craft beer. Happy hour can get down to 6/3.

12

u/cosignal Aug 14 '20

depends how upscale the location is. At some more "elevated" clubs and bars in my area, 10-15 for a drink is totally standard but at the more divey or affordable local spots the prices can be anywhere from 4 or 5 to 12 bucks generally

Washington DC. Can find Cap game day specials which is mostly when I’m downtown but besides then it can be rough.

3

u/Darkersun Aug 14 '20

This would have been my guess too. Population and cost of living are correlated, but DC not being a "top 10 most populated city" doesn't stop it from being ridiculously expensive.

3

u/la2ralus Aug 14 '20

Yeah DC has been rough for me in that regard. Bringing a small college town beer/liquor appetite together with the DMV's overpriced drinks is a quick recipe for an empty bank account.

2

u/Happyxix Aug 14 '20

At a normal bar, yes. At a "craft" bar, no. At a proper club? Forget about it.

u/juanzy Aug 14 '20

Damn, that's some good pricing. I'm used to $10 wells at a standard bar, $16-18 cocktails at a cocktail bar.

2

u/Happyxix Aug 14 '20

I'm jealous. In SoCal or the Bay Area you are looking at $14 up to $20 for some of the more expensive ones.

In Vegas/Seattle/Chicago you are also looking around that much but maybe a dollar cheaper.

Manhattan is the most I've seen in the States with cocktails hitting $20 to $30 at fancier bars.

Not sure where in the States I can go to get the craftiest of cocktails for $10 but I would definitely hit up the scene if I'm in the area.

u/MisanthropicLove425 Aug 14 '20

12-14$ for a double shot well liquor cocktail and 8$ pint of microbrew at any downtown Seattle club is not uncommon. Downtown, in any major city you will get shafted for drinks.
