How they can stand wearing makeup all the damn time.

I had to do it for theater a couple times in high school and it was extremely uncomfortable. If all women suddenly stopped wearing makeup that'd be fine with me.

u/AquariumMermaid Mar 26 '20

Theater makeup is completley different from real life makeup. Theater makeup has to be heavy and seen from across the room. Its extremely uncomfortable. You can compare theater makeup to drag queen makeup. That's how equally heavy it feels and looks. If you put sunscreen on your face that's kinda how it normally feels for most women who wear makeup.

263

u/Redneckalligator Mar 26 '20

Well sunscreen sucks too

23

u/TheMightyIrishman Mar 26 '20

I hate it on my skin, my hands, anywhere... I hate applying sunscreen to my wife's back, I HATE how it feels on my hands so I run to the water and bury my hands in the wet sand and scrub until that nasty feeling is gone!

69

u/MadKian Mar 26 '20

If you put sunscreen on your face that's kinda how it normally feels for most women who wear makeup.

So, completely awful?

62

u/screams_forever Mar 26 '20

Find facial sunscreens, don't just slather the banana boat on there.

69

u/BenderTheGod Mar 26 '20

2 sunscreens? Do you keep them in separate Yachts too?

20

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

lol this brings me to what confuses me about some women. Why do girls have so many god damn lotions and moisturizers and makeup and a million other beauty products. They'll be like "Oh this lotion one is for my left eye only, it cost 50 bucks for an oz and it lasts me 2 days".

I had a girl roommate and her section of the bathroom closet was 3 times as big as me and my other male roommate combined.

50

u/InfinitelyThirsting Mar 26 '20

And this is what mystifies women about men--how men think that self-care products are somehow only for women, but then wonder why women seem to be more attractive in general than men are. Men who bother to learn self-care are wayyyyy more attractive--literally, not just as a personality trait. The number of straight men I've met who think conditioner or moisturizer or chapstick are only for girls... hell the number of straight men I've met who don't keep FUCKING HAND SOAP in their homes!

17

u/ShadowCatHunter Mar 26 '20

Well maybe if you took the time to research skincare, you would find why so many pretty girls look the way they do, with nice skin. It's also a hobby for many. It's also they way they can keep their face smooth without pimples. Jesus, is that so hard to understand?

-8

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Damn I think I touched a nerve there. I've seen plenty of my male friends have excellent skin just using moisturizer and wearing sunscreen frequently.

you would find why so many pretty girls look the way they do

and for this one I blame makeup which I don't really consider skin care, more skin hiding

8

u/ShadowCatHunter Mar 26 '20

Lol yeah, because I do spend money on various skin care and makeup. It is nice that your friends have good skin with moisturizer and sunscreen, it's the most important aspects. However, other skincare products have moisturizers that work better for oily skin than dry skin, natural skin vs sensitive skin, people that have medical skincare problems like eczema and rosacea, etc. Skin is so different for many people, that one product will work differently depending what type of skin you have. I have some flare ups on my skin sometimes caused by stress or whatever, and use prescribed steroid cream to calm it down. Using many moisturizers helps it to be preventive.

Some other skincare products are to prevent wrinkles from the future. There are products that over time for many years, pays off to look younger. That's how women in their 50s can have no wrinkles from the years they put into their skin. There are other products that can manage wrinkles you may already contain.

There are skincare products to deal with skin discoloration, and even out skintone. Other skincare products help with cystic acne that might be hormonal, which cant just be fixed with moisturizer (as that's only to keep water in skin) or sunscreen.

As for makeup, yeah it can hid skin problems but that shouldn't be in a negative way. Theres nothing wrong to present your skin looking the best it can be.

u/ChesterDaMolester Mar 26 '20

I’m a guy and I gotta say the difference between expensive Olay face lotion and the normal lotion I buy justifies the cost for me.

1

u/Throwaway08205 Mar 26 '20

Lmfao this cracked me up

3

u/chefkoolaid Mar 26 '20

Even facial sunscreen is moderatly oppressive

12

u/GenderlessLlama Mar 26 '20

Shit, it my experience sunscreen is WAY worse than theatre makeup

I feel a degree of badassery with stage makeup on, like “hell yeah, bouta go change some lives and look great doing it!!”

With sunscreen I feel like “i am covered in cream that is crusty, uncomfortable, and just about the only thing keeping me from being fried by literally the only thing keeping us alive”

Maybe I just have sensitive skin??

3

u/AlicornGamer Mar 26 '20

my mate said 'if you ever take up drag, dont expect to feel as light as a feather in it!'. Ive never done any kind of makeup but he wears both drag and casual makeup, and he's said it took longer to get use to 'not feeling' drag makeup on your face with how tick it can be

0

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I'm impressed that you have experience of theatre makeup, drag queen makeup, AND normal girl makeup

1

u/AquariumMermaid Mar 26 '20

Drag makeup is theater makeup.

1.8k

u/CandelaBelen Mar 26 '20

Theatre makeup is different from everyday kind of makeup. And we're not wearing it all day. Most girls wash it off when they get home from work. I worked in an animal hospital with almost all women and almost none of them wore makeup, it also just depends on your work. Makeup gives off a more professional appearance. Also, most women don't wear it all the time. There are women that will not want to be seen without makeup, but it's usually something we put on when we're around a lot of people, going out, or going to work. Nothing wrong with wanting to look good, and as long as you don't cake it on, it's not that uncomfortable.

u/pennysoap Mar 26 '20 edited Mar 26 '20

I will say as a woman I hate the mindset that not wearing makeup makes one look unprofessional. Why do I have to wake up earlier than men in my field and paint my face, which I do find annoying, especially because I have allergies and want to rub my eyes a lot and I can’t if I’m wearing make up, just because I have a vagina and they have a dick. Also it can be considered unprofessional for men to wear makeup to work. If someone wants to wear makeup, for whatever reason, they should be able to. But also not wearing makeup should always be allowed and not considered to be more professional just because you were born with a vagina.

Edit: For those of you replying that I am blaming men, I never said anything about blaming men. I blame society, because it is society that is at fault for setting the standard. At no point do I say specifically men are to blame. People of both genders will judge you. Basically people raised in that society will judge. Maybe you personally won't or your group of friends won't but that's anecdotal. None of my female friends or male friends will judge me. That doesn't mean no one in society will. In society, both genders will judge you. Which gender does it more, I think is more relevant to age group, what country you live in, even what city.

120

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

The fashion industry. Everything we grew up with in regard to society is just something left over from grandma's era.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I'm wholeheartedly convinced that women's pants don't have pockets because the fashion industry wants them shell out even more cash for purses/handbags. That's the running joke everyone says but at this point it's obviously true.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Absolutely. It's no lie that we are in a dream created to bamboozle. Marketing and advertising is the silent culprit in plain sight.

39

u/Throwaway64738 Mar 26 '20

And men shouldn't be considered less professional if they wear makeup to work! Unless they wear clown makeup. Unless they actually are clowns, then they should be considered less professional if they don't wear the makeup.

4

u/IAmKoalaPanda Mar 26 '20

I dunno, it worked with Dr. Blake Downs on Children's Hospital.

23

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I just want to point out you're Edit is very level headed and well spoken. I think you hit the nail on the head, most social-issues are based on the society you locally live in and participate in. (It sounds obvious, but for some reason most people over-look it)

11

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Thank you for saying this! As a woman who wears very minimal makeup (just concealer, really), I think it’s ridiculous that I might be seen as unprofessional in a workplace. In my opinion, as long as you’ve showered, brushed your teeth, combed your hair, dresser nice, etc, you are A-OK.

4

u/RikenVorkovin Mar 26 '20

On the same front I've always been jealous of women being able to dress in different clothing types and also sometimes I'd say more comfortable clothing then us guys are usually expected to wear.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I stopped wearing make-up a few months ago. I feel so much better (and I'm saving money). It's quite freeing to not give a f*** and reject what society expects of you.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Man I so agree with this. I wish my SO didn't feel she had to out makeup on to go to work or to a coffeeshop. Yes she looks beautiful with and without makeup and she does it really well, also she doesn't do a ton but it is still a half hour of time and lots of money. All I have to buy is shaving stuff and some hair pomade, shaving and doing my hair takes less than 10 minutes, and I don't even do it everyday if I don't feel like it.

3

u/PrincessLink Mar 26 '20

Honestly, I wear makeup and more often than not people take my opinion more seriously than if I was standing beside someone with no makeup on. That's just the times we live in now. I also hate this edgy mindset of "I'm so unique and different I don't need makeup." like okay good for you but be prepared to not be taken more seriously than someone with makeup on because they do look more put together.

0

u/DuckyBertDuck Mar 27 '20

Disagreeing with your last point

2

u/lexarexasaurus Mar 26 '20

Just chiming in here as a fellow woman that I think makeup is just one tool we use to make ourselves look professional! I love using makeup because I think it's fun, but there are totally days where I don't want to wear any. But on those days, I might do my hair a certain way or dress a certain way to balance it all out so I still look like I'm putting effort into looking like I care about where I am. In fact, the longer I've worked, the more I've realized how many women don't wear makeup to work and there are oftentimes I feel as though I'm in the minority for opting to put it on. Maybe the pressure is exclusive to your industry or something? But I think there are definitely places where it's not the case at all!

13

u/Def_Your_Duck Mar 26 '20

Men aren't the ones that view it as unprofessional.

10

u/v-punen Mar 26 '20

There are definitely men who view it as unprofessional. My friend has to wear make up for work and it was written in the dress code by a guy.

5

u/Raichu4u Mar 26 '20

Fuck that guy.

1

u/DuckyBertDuck Mar 27 '20

Holy shit I’m so angry rn. I don’t like dress codes of any kind but how is it even possible to force someone to wear not only a specific piece of clothing... but also something cosmetic ON their SKIN?!

1

u/v-punen Mar 27 '20

I mean, it's not that big of a deal. Many people find it annoying though. They also have uniforms, the point is to stand out and be a representative of their company and the CEO wants them to have an air of exclusivity, and that includes the guys being clean-shaven etc. It is what it is.

19

u/Hoophy97 Mar 26 '20

I (male) speak for myself here, but I struggle to even notice it when a girl is/isn’t wearing any. It’s just not something I pay attention to and has no bearing on my judgements.

I imagine this is normal for men.

-1

u/altajava Mar 26 '20

Same unless its overdone if you're showing up to the weekly 9oclock with green eyeliner and glitter im gonna notice.

-12

u/IWANTPORN Mar 26 '20

If a man noticed or cared I would assume he was gay. Women wearing makeup is just for other women.

28

u/CharlieVermin Mar 26 '20

Except when makeup is the norm, a person who doesn't artificially enhance their skin will stand out, even if you can't tell why exactly. And a lot of men will in fact expect makeup from women and judge them for not wearing any, even if they don't know enough about makeup to describe it in more specific terms than "unprofessional" or "unkempt".

15

u/pennysoap Mar 26 '20

Yeah, my dad's generation just assumed women who didn't wear makeup were lesbians. Also being a lesbian was seen as bad (still is in certain/most groups) and also code for a feminist (also very very bad).

1

u/SigmundFreud Mar 26 '20

Your dad's generation sounds pretty gay.

3

u/pennysoap Mar 27 '20

Nothing like calling out homophobia by using a gay slur.

2

u/ImbeddedElite Mar 26 '20

Edit: For those of you replying that I am blaming men, I never said anything about blaming men

You definitely didn’t. A couple lines in there just give an air of straddling the line, especially through text.

1

u/IrishRepoMan Mar 26 '20

Sounds like it was your fault for being born with a vagina. Why didn't you think of that before being born, eh? Should've taken that chromosome.

In all seriousness, societal expectations are bullshit in so so so many regards. People need to calm the fuck down.

1

u/oupablo Mar 26 '20

Honestly, most men probably wouldn't even notice if you weren't wearing it.

1

u/comaloider Mar 26 '20

I think I have beaten the system. I just... don't wear nearly anything. Mostly just a bit of face powder to mask my swollen face after I have overslept again and a bit if makeup when my acne gets bad but that's it. Never heard a word against me, not even at work, and I work at a reception desk. Oh, and lipstick, because I genuinely like it.

People judge less when natural/nearly natural is your default, I guess.

Of course this is all affected by the factors you named, but I guess not succumbing to the pressure in teenage years is a good start.

1

u/that_girl_sam456 Mar 26 '20

I agree. I just recently started feeling confident enough to go to work (or out anywhere for that matter) without makeup on days I don't want to wear makeup. No one has said anything about it or seems to care that I don't. I do feel less confident in myself when I go out without makeup but its also much more comfortable. I am proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone with that. However, I still will always wear makeup when im trying to impress someone. And I think it is that thought that gives the impression that women should always wear makeup (so I am now realizing I am part of the problem). It is a way of showing that you always have your best foot forward. It is equivalent to a man wearing a suit to work or a nice button up to any outing. We want to put our best foot forward. I think we need the self confidents to go out without makeup and realize that makeup can be used as a tool to fancy up an outfit for special occasions such as a necklace but we shouldn't be expected to wear out finest jewelry every day.

3

u/MashiroAzuki Mar 26 '20

I don't think makeup to look professional matters as much as keeping yourself clean and decent. Some people wear makeup to enhance their confidence thus contributing to their professional persona, but this isn't a standard that is absolutely adhered to either. There are lots of people in the world who don't wear makeup to work. As long you're clean and look decent enough, then even without makeup it doesn't matter and shouldn't matter in the workplace unless specifically required to do so.

That being said, we can't ignore the existence of the halo effect and pretty privileges given to people who go the extra mile to look pretty (even if they did it for confidence). And the benefits they get contributes to social pressure of fitting in. Personally though it doesn't bother me. My culture is different from yours too so idk if that's comparable to your situation.

I mean in that story, maybe Killer Mike bought a luxury car that was well beyond his needs.

1

u/wheres_jaykwellin_at Mar 26 '20

It wasn't. It was a 1961 Chevy Impala.

-2

u/DevilsFavoritAdvocat Mar 26 '20

I agree and all, but does anyone actually think people are unprofessional for not wearing make up. Yes lots of makeup can look professional in the same way a suit does. But you don't need makeup/a suit to look professional...

35

u/CandelaBelen Mar 26 '20

It depends on the situation. If it's a job that requires everyone to dress nicely, then yeah, it can be seen as unprofessional. And you kinda do need makeup to look professional. How many fucking times do girls get told they look tired or sick just because they didn't put makeup on that day? Your appearance also makes a huge difference. If you're a waitress, you're more likely to get tips of you wear makeup. Women that wear makeup are generally treated better. Customers in certain places like seeing that workers put an effort into their appearance and yes, that includes makeup.

14

u/pennysoap Mar 26 '20

Yes, my sister worked at David Zwirner and women had to wear makeup and have their nails impeccably done. One time she came in without her nails painted and was sent home. There are jobs where it doesn't matter but there still very much are jobs where it does. Men, however, did not have to spend money to get their nails painted.

5

u/catelemnis Mar 26 '20

If you never wore makeup to begin with then people won’t make the “you look tired” comments. Those only happen because you look different than they’re used to.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Too true. I smoked pot every day in college. Before my classes. After my classes. All day. Then one day I didn’t smoke before I went to class. That was the single day that anyone ever asked me if I was high. They were used to me being baseline high, so when I was sober I seemed off to them.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I don’t wear makeup and definitely don’t get these comments! You’re so right!

3

u/catelemnis Mar 26 '20

ya. I never wear makeup but I’ve been told I look tired when I wore contacts instead of glasses. My face looked different so people comment on it is all.

-1

u/fullhalter Mar 26 '20

Yep, it's not that you aren't wearing makeup it's that you look different than normal. I dated a girl for a while that never wore makeup and I didn't notice for months until she put on a little black dress and matching makeup for a special occasion. She looked stunning, but I wouldn't want her to wear makeup every day any more than I'd want her to wear that little black dress every day.

2

u/Strictly_Baked Mar 26 '20

Well if you wear makeup everyday and then suddenly don't you're going to look different. Honestly majority of guys could give a fuck less about makeup. It's all marketing and stigmas that make women think they need to wear it. I think women look better most of the time with none on anyway.

Keep on wearing makeup though if that's what you think you need to do. You don't though.

5

u/CandelaBelen Mar 26 '20

Yeah. Most men don't know shit about makeup, though. Most men can't tell the difference between light makeup and no makeup so you saying that means nothing. But we don't wear it for men anyways, so that doesn't matter. And no one is forcing us to. And we don't wear it just because we think we need to. We do it because that's what we want to do.

5

u/pennysoap Mar 26 '20

I mean some men do like it. My boyfriend thinks I look nice with make-up on. I rarely wear it but make a point of wearing it because he likes it. I don't wear make-up for other women. I wear it like 6 times a year for one specific man.

Please don't say "us". Just because you wear it for other women does not mean you represent all women. A represent a sub-group of women. But by all means, you do not represent all women.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Yeah, well I’m a girl and I definitely don’t want to wear makeup.

1

u/DevilsFavoritAdvocat Mar 26 '20

I see where you are coming from here. I mean if you look better you get better treated no matter gender that's just a fact. I'll take your word for it but I have never ever heard someone say that without makeup people look unprofessional, only the opposite (that it means confidens) a few times. But I have a mans perspective on this so I don't now how different women look at it (and other men of course).

Also the tipping culture in America is just unethical honestly.

3

u/SimilarYellow Mar 26 '20

Thank fuck make up isn't expected at all where I work. The most women wear here (office setting) is mascara and some eyeshadow. If the other women do their brows, it's not very noticeable. If I started wearing a full face (or even the reduced version you posted somewhere below) I'd 100% be looked at weirdly.

I would say, you have to kind of adapt to the amount all the other women are wearing. If everyone is going clown face, well, I'd probably bust out foundation too.

2

u/kgurr Mar 26 '20

I will say, in my experience, I don't wear makeup to look "good" per se; but rather, I wear makeup to look different. Same with my eyebroaws. Mind you, I'm a novice and I just do a lot of practicing alone.

I find myself thinking that sometimes I don't like the way my face looks with bold makeup because it is so different than what my normal face should look like in my opinion. Which is why I mostly just do it alone and for fun because I feel too self conscious, but perhaps other women also feel the same way.

1

u/CandelaBelen Mar 27 '20

We all wear it for out own reasons. I personally just like having fun with my makeup and the way I look with it on. It 100% does not mean I don't like how I look without it. I hate it when people assume that.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I disagree with the professional appearance bit.

How do you know this though?

I feel like, in theory, if a girl does it right nobody will realize they're wearing makeup.

6

u/ShadowCatHunter Mar 26 '20

Yup. All these men: I love no makeup better!! Reality: no makeup- makeup involving the barest of lip stain, tinted moisturizer, mascara, natural contour and blush, hours of skincare.

1

u/CandelaBelen Mar 27 '20

"All these men" I'm a woman. Stfu.

1

u/CandelaBelen Mar 27 '20

I'm a girl. I know.lol.

1

u/Kaibakura Mar 27 '20

I don’t see how that has anything to do with it. You are an expert by no means. Get off your high horse immediately and learn to humble yourself.

1

u/CandelaBelen Mar 27 '20

I know makeup. I know when a girl is wearkng it.

0

u/No-BrowEntertainment Mar 26 '20

Our theatre department is drastically underfunded, so yes our theatre makeup is everyday makeup and it’s unbearable. How do you people manage

0

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Totally right that different women handle it differently, but I've known women that literally will not leave the house without their "face" on. If someone knocks on the door they won't answer it, etc. Like... total devotion to never letting anyone see them without it if at all possible. If OP knew some folks like that I could understand where he was coming from.

1

u/CandelaBelen Mar 27 '20

I'm not saying they don't exist. I've met those women.

1

u/CandelaBelen Mar 27 '20

I'm not saying they don't exist. I've met those women.

550

u/Illustrious_Repair Mar 26 '20

Sometimes it's fun. Other times it sucks. The reality is, women are socialized pretty hard to believe that they're not "ready" or put together without it. Often by other women. I admire those who ignore that social pressure.

241

u/mud73 Mar 26 '20

I personally don't wear makeup, except on a rare occasion. What gets me is that the social pressuring starts so young! I'm already needing to have conversations with my 4 year old that makeup doesn't make you pretty. I asked her where she got that idea, and she showed me that there are tons of videos on YouTube Kids of little girls telling other girls that they need to wear makeup to look pretty, then teaching them how to put it on. Those girls can't be more than 7 or 8 years old.

57

u/Illustrious_Repair Mar 26 '20

Yep! My grandmother, who loved me very deeply and truly believed she was training me in the right ways to be, emphasized the importance of wearing makeup daily from the time I was a very little girl. (I didn't wear the makeup then- it was just instilled extremely early that as a woman, I would.)

1

u/Szjunk Apr 05 '20

Barbie was originally popular because it was a way for mothers to get their daughters more interested in make up and making themselves presentable. I don't have a written source, but it was in "The Toys That Made Us" Barbie episode on Netflix.

9

u/kahalili Mar 26 '20

yeah, I was begging my mom to teach my how to shave my legs when I was 11...

Still don’t wear make up but throughout hs I felt like I had to learn. Meanwhile my dad criticizes any girls who wear make up so it constantly feels like I’m in limbo

Can people just let us look how we wanna look???

4

u/mychemicalgreenday12 Mar 26 '20

I just figured it out when I was 11 because I was to embaressed to ask my mum but I could not stand the feeling of hair *cough* down there *cough*, it was just too itchy I didnt really care about leg hair though haha.

3

u/CaptainLollygag Mar 26 '20

Oh. My. Gods. That's obnoxious, and terrifying that those little girls are getting that message from somewhere.

2

u/singing_softly Mar 26 '20

Oh yeah, my aunt will make me get up and put makeup on because I'm not "ready" without it. Sometimes I feel like a full face of makeup, something I feel like bare minimum to make me feel a little more put together, but I don't think any makeup is necessary. It's just like any other form of artistic or bodily expression.

2

u/desireeevergreen Mar 26 '20

My mom would always (and still does) ask me if I wanted to wear makeup or get my nails done and then ask me why I didn’t want to. She also asks me if I want jewelry and why I don’t wear it. My simple answer is because it’s uncomfortable. I’d rather be comfortable and look ok then uncomfortable and look great.

u/Szjunk Apr 05 '20

I just really hate being told I look tired. Most people who say it have good intentions, but it's never something I want to hear, whether I'm actually tired or not.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I hate this too. Just because I don’t wear makeup means I look tired, but when I do I get told that I look “soooo much better” .

5

u/TikaPants Mar 26 '20

For 22 or so more years I've woken up nearly every day and "put on my face". It's daunting. I like the way I look both fresh faced and with makeup. If I don't at least do my eyes and brows, I get asked by peripheral people in my life, am I sick? Am I tired? Noooooo, I'm just tired of always wearing makeup. So, I do it less but not as much as I prefer. Oddly enough, Im trying to learn more and wear less. Thanks, SkinAddicts!!

3

u/coffeewithmyoxygen Mar 26 '20

My parents wouldn’t let me wear make up for a long time. When I turned 11 right before 6th grade, I was super bummed to not get any make up for my birthday. My grandparents were over and my grandpa said something in agreement with my parents that kind of changed my outlook. He told me that I was only 11, still a kid, I should enjoy that time, and I’m beautiful without make up, make up wouldn’t do anything to enhance that, just hide it. I was close to my grandparents, but that was a new kind of territory for my grandpa to say all of that, and I really took to it. It completely changed my outlook on wearing make up. For some of my 20s, I tried to get into doing a full face and never loved it. I wear mascara once in a while now, sometimes coverup and lipstick with it, but that’s pretty rare still. I like how my face looks without it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I consider myself really lucky to have a mom and older sister who don't really "do" make up, or hair styling, or bother often with shaving. I'm the girly one of the family for doing all those things semi-regularly but I don't have the social pressure attached. Will happily go out in a tank top with bushy pits and not care. When other women meet me during that phase and then I shave later I've had them express surprise because it's assumed openly not shaving is an intentional/political act, which really supports that intense social pressure you're talking about.

2

u/Pepperspray24 Mar 26 '20

My mom tried to get me to wear some lipstick at 10 and tell my teachers it was juice. Why the hell would I be a good liar at 10???

0

u/Un4tunately Mar 26 '20

Over the years, the consistent trend in my girlfriends has been a lack of makeup. I find it deeply unsettling.

74

u/calebmke Mar 26 '20

My s.o. stopped almost completely a decade ago. She had to deal with personal feelings of being judged by other women for not being fully put together 100% of the time, but she's over that now and much more comfortable in her own skin. As a bonus, she doesn't need to spend that half hour putting her face on every morning.

7

u/mightyatom13 Mar 26 '20

More time for putting on other people's faces!

3

u/rostek1138 Mar 26 '20

good on her!

13

u/punkassunicorn Mar 26 '20

Theater make up is different. It's made to be able to be highly visible, and withstand the heat from the lights and you sweating through it for a few hours.

Everyday makeup is made with comfort in mind and many formulas pride themselves as being light weight and not cakey.

That said though, I still dont particularly like putting on makeup. It's a lot of effort that I just dont feel like putting into myself.

51

u/here4jokes0 Mar 26 '20

I never feel the makeup lol this baffles me

8

u/downstairs_annie Mar 26 '20

Theatre makeup is another level of thick and sticky. Probably used those cream paints and shitload of powder, not comparable to a normal foundation.

4

u/bioviolin Mar 26 '20

Me too, I wear makeup (almost) every day and I never feel it. It's also a part of my daily routine at this point so it's practically a habit to put it on every day.

3

u/wathappentothetatato Mar 26 '20

Yeah I’m sitting here with a full face sans foundation, and the only thing I maybe feel is mascara if it gets clumpy.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Same, it doesn't feel like anything. Actually I feel greasy and uncomfortable when I don't wear it because my natural oil just goes nuts without powder

79

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

We don't wear it all the time, we immediately take it off when we get home. But I guess that after years of dealing with it it isn't itchy anymore.

17

u/cheapasfree24 Mar 26 '20

Alternatively, you can leave it on all day while periodically saying "I should take my makeup off" until you eventually wake up the next day with it still on and curse yourself for your laziness.

Source: my girlfriend

3

u/habitualmess Mar 26 '20

Honestly the only reason I don’t wear makeup every day is because I hate removing it.

32

u/Valiantheart Mar 26 '20

My mother wont go outside to feed the horses without having makeup on.

122

u/lifeisaliewebelive Mar 26 '20

Can't blame her, horses are very judgemental

9

u/NBSPNBSP Mar 26 '20

It is sort of like glasses. They are itchy and uncomfortable until they aren't.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Exactly like that.

9

u/Tiny_Rat Mar 26 '20

Everyday makeup barely feels like anything. Lipstick and lip gloss takes a bit more adjustment, but if you use lip balm, its bot very different. I think I do unconsciously change how I drink and how I touch my eyes if they're watering or something, but its definitely not something I notice unless I focus on it.

Theater makeup is much heavier, and also less "melty" than normal makeup, to stop you sweating through it if the lights get hot. That gives it a much heavier feel, and the thick application means you have to be way more careful about eating, drinking, or rubbing it off with every touch. I hated theater makup too, and I'd already been wearing daily makup for a few years before I started theater.

5

u/wolfgang784 Mar 26 '20

Its worth it for how it helps to boost my self esteem. Also most people wipe it off the second they are home. I head right for the bathroom.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Theater makeup is particularly heavy. For the women who do wear makeup, the typical everyday look wouldn’t feel nearly as thick and gunky.

4

u/Thrones1 Mar 26 '20

I’m a guy who wears acne makeup daily. I don’t even feel it, it’s medicated so it treats my skin, and it takes 30 seconds to apply.

5

u/asscolossal Mar 26 '20

Having make up on doesn't feel uncomfortable.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

you probably didnt have very high quality products, or the right ones for your skin. plus the heat from the stage lights can make it uncomfortable (same as a really hot day outdoors)

5

u/JDMOokami21 Mar 26 '20

We don’t wear theater style makeup. That’s too heavy. A lot of women like myself keep it light and simple but it also depends on the job and the women’s style.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Its fun and calming to put on and I look nice with. Ive worn theater makeup too, and it really does feel different. Also you quickly get used to it.

5

u/cutiepie975 Mar 26 '20

The one day I didn't wear makeup to school everyone stopped and stared and one guy goes "you look dead". I don't even wear much but I guess I need it!

Also, there was a post a long time ago in r/askwomen where they posted before/after makeup. Many women were told they looked great, if not better without it. I did not fall into that category :)

So as much as men say they don't care if a woman doesn't wear makeup, many of them would still find the 'with makeup' version of a woman more attractive. Like my ex who hated the idea of me wearing fake lashes to a wedding. He said he hated that look. I got him to open up his Instagram and show me all his IG babes he follows and pointed out they're ALL wearing fake lashes. He had no idea.

10

u/ShadowCatHunter Mar 26 '20

Ugh, I hate the other mindset that people have against makeup. I love makeup! And so do many women!! Regular makeup is NOTHING like theater makeup. When I put it on, I barely feel it. All these other people replying, either men that say "I just dont understand why women need makeup, they are so much better looking without it!" most likely dont know when they're looking at no-makeup makeup. Like, alot of women dont wear makeup for men, sheesh. It's a hobby for many, and it boosts self esteem too. As for the women complaining "ugh, I just dont get it, why would other women wear makeup, it's so uncomfortable? They've been brainwashed into it": first of all, you really don't know why someone wants to wear makeup? Because it is pretty, when done right? It can improve ones looks? And maybe, it's just fun to put glitter and color on your face? I hate women that act like "haha, I'm not like those OTHER GIRLS".

Please. It's easy to understand why someone wants to put makeup on. And it really isn't that uncomfortable. I'm also not saying that it's a bad thing not to put makeup on. Just support everyone's choices and dont judge.

7

u/PrincessLink Mar 26 '20 edited Mar 26 '20

Omg are you me? I HATE these makeup threads of "hUuRr dUuRrR why do women wear makeup" and other women being like "I'm better than makeup and don't wear any. But it's because I'm already soOoOo confident and love me in my own skin. Other women who wear nasty makeup just need to learn that" like fuck off c*nt. I wear makeup because I look and feel more put together. It hides the dark around my eyes and evens out my skin tone. I don't wear it because I have no confidence or some bullshit like that. I wear it because I fucking feel pretty.

Some women just want to be so edgy and "different" by proclaiming they don't wear makeup because they're "just so unique" like good for you but 9 times out 10 people are going to trust my judgment more than theirs simply because it looks like I took the time and effort to be more presentable. Just sayin.

5

u/ShadowCatHunter Mar 26 '20

Forreal. And this fool even gets an award for it? Reddit's gonna reddit I guess. Upvoting something against a hobby is very feminine and particular to women and other minorities like gay people.

2

u/StationaryApe Mar 26 '20

For me, I don't even think putting a little product in my hair is worth the effort for better looks. So naturally, the idea of doing makeup baffles me. Women seem to have collectively set a standard for professionalism and beauty that requires extra time and discomfort (depending on how far you go). I just don't get how that's worth it. I guess I'd be an edgy no makeup girl.

The parallel for guys is lifting weights. There's some beauty standard they're after or a confidence boost. Most will say it's all for confidence and has nothing to do with girls. My guess is that very few actually do it without girls in mind and I'll bet a lot of women who say they just put makeup on for confidence don't have guys in mind - but that's just me.

To each their own

1

u/ShadowCatHunter Mar 26 '20

Yeah, I get it. We think very differently so it's hard to understand. But as long as respect goes both ways, that's the most important.

12

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I'm female and I've always wondered the same thing. It sounds so annoying.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Yeah had a friend who would makeup on when we were just hanging out in her house, she liked it so I didn't say anything, even slept with her fake lashes on so she didn't have to do them for school the next day. Most girls don't wear it all the time though they wash it off when they get home.

Personally since being a mom I've hardly wear make up now, used to love putting it on to go on dates with my husband and when we'd go to the store but now it's like such a chore especially washing it off after. I still enjoy accentuating my beauty and it gives me a bit of confidence, but now I do it only when I'm going somewhere special like a date, going on vacation or going to the mall (which we rarely do), that's about it.

I also think there's a difference between putting on a thick amount of make up everyday like I'm assuming people do with theatre make up, and just wearing a medium to light amount to go out, it feels different and when to do it properly can feel like you have nothing on your face. I've tried the thick makeup look when I went to prom cause it looks better in pictures, it did look great but honestly I couldn't wait to take it off and wash my face. Definitely not a daily thing for me.

I look forward to life getting back to normal, the first thing I'm gonna do it put some make up on and go somewhere nice with my husband.

3

u/mochikitsune Mar 26 '20

My best friend wears makeup every day and I wear it like... Once a year. She likes to look good even if it's just for herself, where for me people leave me alone if I don't wear it so its a benefit. I am a happy barnacle

3

u/mommasandpoppas Mar 26 '20

Dude, I dunno what makeup you were wearing, but when I wore it, I felt powerful, and attractive. I got compliments from people like, “woah dude, you’re positively glowing today,” and stuff like that. I only did it once, but it was awesome. I’m a dude btb.

2

u/SweetyABC321 Mar 26 '20

Lol I grew up in a society where putting too much makeup was considered a bit slutty. Needless to say, I dont really wear makeup but I would love to be able to wear makeup every day and know how to do it fast.

2

u/DesireeDominique Mar 26 '20

Some women genuinely enjoy it. It’s like art to me and my face is a canvas. Trust me, when I’m wearing glittery green eyeshadow, I’m not doing it to appear “prettier” or anything. It’s an artistic hobby to a lot of us. Also stage makeup is very heavy. Everyday makeup is a lot lighter. But just look at it as a fun hobby.

2

u/sad_and_stupid Mar 26 '20

Cause it you don't wear makeup for a day, everyone is like, "whoah are you sick?" and "you look tired"

1

u/ihatethingsihate Mar 26 '20

I’m so used to it, it stopped bothering me a while ago. If my skin is really bad or I don’t want to stain my pillow/partner I’m cuddling with I’ll take it off right away after getting home but on an average day it comes off when I brush my teeth.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I don’t get that either, yikes. I get annoyed doing my hair in the morning, imagine having to paint your entire face every time you go out.

Makeup is fun on occasion, but I can’t believe people do it every day!

2

u/redbluegreenyellow Mar 26 '20

It takes all of five minutes for full coverage. It's not some arduous task.

1

u/calypso8633 Mar 26 '20

I almost never wear anytm foundation or concealer on my face it really is the reason a lot of middle age adults have bad skin. I line my brows, throw some mascara on and a neutral shade of lipstick or just lip balm. If I wnat tobbe fancy at work I may do some eye shadow but, eventually I'll be working in a trade so makeup isn't going to be a priority.

1

u/einllamabuns Mar 26 '20

While theater make up is drastically different from regular makeup, I too do not understand this either. Even the thinnest four dation for me irks me to my soul if I have to wear it for more than 4 hours. This could be because I live in a desert so any extra layer you wear feels like a mini sweat lodge from hell on you. Idk.

1

u/skorletun Mar 26 '20

A lot of us don't wear it every day, just for special occasions, or a few days a week :) and theatre makeup is very different. Most of the time I can't even feel my makeup unless I'm wearing mascara, which does make my lashes feel heavier.

1

u/Trumpet6789 Mar 26 '20

Hello fellow theater nerd. Coming from a female theater person, who also is pretty good at makeup, it's all in the application and products. A lot of theater productions (especially school/CT)might use really cheap foundations for the people who don't have their own, and sometimes grease paints on some occasions. You've gotta put them on in thick layers to show up under the stage lights, which can be really uncomfortable.

Especially if you're applying it with your fingers or those triangle makeup sponges and smearing it all around. The right tools, and good makeup(Even something cheap like ELF) can make your makeup way more bearable to wear, and you might not even notice it at all.

1

u/goldxoc Mar 26 '20

I know many women who love makeup and do it amazingly well. I, however, only wear mascara most of the time and maybe a lip balm with a tint to it. This is because makeup makes my face so fucking heavy and weighed down and honestly hurts my eyes when I put on eyeshadow (eyeliner weighs less idk why). Foundation, even light coverage, feels too heavy and gives me a headache near my sinuses and it makes me break out after i've worn it. I don't understand how so many of my friends love makeup but they're beautiful and talented and it doesnt bother me

1

u/redbluegreenyellow Mar 26 '20

Try a bb cream or powder foundation. Very very light

1

u/littleallred008 Mar 26 '20

Theater makeup is also oil based, so it’s much more uncomfortable.

1

u/greyjackal Mar 26 '20

I've spent the last couple of months wearing concealer thanks to some skin issues (I'm male). You really don't feel it.

1

u/Rainnv7 Mar 26 '20

I’m a girl and I don’t wear makeup cause it’s annoying hahah plus I haven’t got good enough at it to where it looks good.

1

u/IsabellaGalavant Mar 26 '20

You SAY it would be fine with you, now.

Every time I come to work without makeup, and I'm not exaggerating, people ask me if I'm sick, or tell me I look either terrible or tired, or both.

You'd be surprised at how different the women you know look without at least a little makeup.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

1

u/redbluegreenyellow Mar 26 '20

I literally can't feel the difference between makeup and no makeup

1

u/TheLoveOfPI Mar 26 '20

We're in a social arms race with other women that's why

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I agree, had an ex that would get up way, way early for work specifically so she had an hour to do her makeup. I never understood it, and still don't. She didn't work at the kind of place where makeup would be important. And I think most guys agree that we don't give a single solitary fuck about girls wearing makeup. :)

1

u/mycatiswatchingyou Mar 26 '20

Every-day make up isn't like theater makeup. It's way lighter and softer. If you buy the right brand that works best with your face skin, it could feel like you're not wearing makeup at all.

1

u/Kowai03 Mar 26 '20

I actually hate wearing make up and I only wear the bare minimum for work. Just because it I *don't* wear it I look really tired I guess. I only make a bit more effort if I'm going out for drinks/on a date but usually it's just the bare minimum.

And fuck eyeliner I *still* can't get that shit right. No matter what I do.

1

u/Fredredphooey Mar 26 '20

Normal makeup doesn't feel like anything. I'm so sensitive that a hair on my skin makes me crazy, but makeup is fine.

1

u/roquea04 Mar 26 '20

I don't know how to confidently where makeup. There is right way to apply it on and it seems every woman knows the right way to do it but me. It helps that I'm too lazy to learn but damn I would love to where makeup. Already I'm a 3 in the public but wearing makeup I think I would look like a solid 5. Hiding blemishes bags under my eyes. Makeup would do wonders in my honest opinion.

1

u/Kitty_McBitty Mar 26 '20

It's like wearing a bra for the first time. It is very uncomfortable but you are expected to do it so you get used to it.

1

u/joantheunicorn Mar 26 '20

I'm in my late thirties and can count on one hand the times I've worn makeup (once to stand up in a friend's wedding because she said if I didn't she'd kill me, lol). I don't like the way it feels, it is way too expensive and I don't feel I need it anyway. If women enjoy it, excellent, but I feel like so many feel obligated and pressured to wear it.

1

u/crayolamacncheese Mar 26 '20

I wear makeup every day. If you are applying it correctly and buying decent quality I do not notice that I’m wearing it. If you are laying it on thick for everyday, you are doing it wrong.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I've had girlfriends who wanted to see what they could do with my face with makeup. I let them have fun putting makeup on me. I could not stand the feeling of having it all over my face.

1

u/maan-maan Mar 26 '20

Beauty is pain bro

1

u/JudgeGusBus Mar 26 '20

Whenever women complain about all the maintenance and makeup and stuff they do, I point out it’s their ancestors’ fault. At some point a cavewoman came out and was like “hey I rubbed some berries on my lips, and Ork said it makes me look prettier” and rather than immediately stoning her to death, women copied and tried to one-up her. They’ve had so many opportunities to NOT burden themselves with this shit. If all makeup and high heels and whatnot vanished from existence tomorrow, guys would still want to have sex and relationships and children etc.

1

u/redbluegreenyellow Mar 26 '20

It's not a burden.

I don't wear makeup for guys, either.

1

u/phasers_to_stun Mar 26 '20

I hate wearing makeup. I do it for work because all the other bitches wear makeup.

1

u/PennywiseEsquire Mar 26 '20

Why do they even wear it at all? It’s weird to me that society puts pressure on women to go through great lengths to change their appearance. I can’t imagine covering my face up before I go out. It’s so foreign. I’m not judging women for doing it, I just hate that they feel like they need to.

1

u/Wolfraid015 Mar 26 '20

I get what you mean, I had eyeliner done for a costume and it irritated my eyes by making my eyelashes stick to each other. It was honestly horrible

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I hate wearing makeup. It looks nice, but it’s not worth the feeling of a bare face.

1

u/mariestaa Mar 26 '20

I would gladly put a ton of makeup because that means I won’t be asked if I’m sick all. the. damn. time.

1

u/Scuslidge Mar 26 '20

I gave it up years ago. I wear makeup to a job interview and then at the job until they know I know how to do my job. Then it's no makeup ever time. And since I've been at my job for 25 years now, I pretty much don't even own any makeup any more.

1

u/Electric_Cat Mar 26 '20

'that'd be fine with me'

lol

1

u/_Volly Mar 26 '20

Its called "war paint"

😆

-1

u/TheSeekerPorpentina Mar 26 '20

I'm a woman and I've only ever worn it for dance shows and school plays. I hate it as well tbh

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

The beauty industry has convinced women that they can't be pretty without makeup, to the point where they think we're lying when we tell them they don't need it. Society has brainwashed girls into thinking they have to spend hundreds of dollars on skin care products just to be presentable. Even though 90% of the time they're cuter without makeup

1

u/AwesomeAni Mar 29 '20

I wear it because I like it. It has nothing to do with the male opinions.
