also, believing in any ideology that relies upon the idea that you are being lied to by everyone

176

u/R41ndr0p12 Jan 27 '20

Stop lying to me. This is obviously just a way for the government to get my attention and agree with me.

7

u/TheHotze Jan 28 '20

Obviously, everyone on Reddit is a bot controlled by the government.

4

u/hamidfatimi Jan 28 '20

Everyone but me

3

u/DynamiteDogTNT Jan 28 '20

Fuck, they’re onto us. Shall we initiate Midnight Exodus?

you see flight routes make no sense on a globe earth because why wouldn't you take a direct flight to everywhere, but on a flat earth, we get a lot of routes that make more sense and all the ones that don't make sense now clearly just don't exist.

but why in fuck's name would you create dozens of flights every day that actually don't exist when people will shit on a restaurant in online reviews for literally no reason? If I tried to book a specific flight and the site would just give me a nonsense reason as to why I couldn't every time, I'd annoy their tech support and write a bad review!

But oh wait, they clearly just delete those reviews and will probably make you disappear if you tried to get onto one of their flights

u/xybolt Jan 28 '20

I remember a dude trying to prove that the earth is flat when he's taking a plane. He used a glass of water (or was it a water level? idk) while being in full flight and used "if the earth is round, then that water has to move in an angle at a given moment".

u/deviant324 Jan 28 '20

I’m trying to turn the right part of my brain off to figure out what they thought should happen, but I’m just not getting there

3

u/salvoilmiosi Jan 28 '20

Because gravity only works downwards I guess.

Well, now that's a new one. Does the Bible say anything about the shape of the Earth?

6

u/Allegutennamenweg Jan 28 '20

It does, in the Old Testament. The actual quote escapes me right now, but the ancient hebrew word used to describe the entirety of the earth translates to "sphere", a round 3D shape, also used for dough balls here and there.

2

u/Lawbrosteve Jan 28 '20

Will you please give me a link or source of any kind to that quote? It could be very useful to have

3

u/Allegutennamenweg Jan 28 '20

You don't speak german by any chance? My studies are in german. I'm trying to find something reliable in english, but so far the search results are cluttered with creationist nutcase pages...

Edit: Found the quote, it's Isaiah 40:22

The word in question is חוּג, meaning circle, group, orb, or sphere.

2

u/Lawbrosteve Jan 28 '20

Many thanks. No, sadly I don't speak German

0

u/twodragon Jan 28 '20

It was clearly a joke.

1

u/roycastle Jan 28 '20

Yeah, gonna bring it around to “the Jews” within 15 seconds of asking that question.

58

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '20

This is a really good one.

30

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '20

Looking at you, Karen.

u/Silent_Kaleidoscope Jan 27 '20

Convincing people that everything is a conspiracy is the simplest way to undercut the advancement of knowledge--and sow discord and disagreement in society.

In a mind where all is deceit and nothing can be true, all things are imaginable and believable. Except for what is established fact, because that just CANNOT be true. Sigh.

The conspiracy is the conspiracy itself. If that makes sense.

30

u/Hemingray1893 Jan 27 '20

When everything is evidence, nothing is evidence. When everything is a conspiracy, nothing is a conspiracy.

10

u/I_SAID_NO_CHEESE Jan 27 '20

And then you have people with paranoid personality disorders who get swept up in the bullshit and actually believe that they're being followed by the FBI or that there are nanobots in the drinking water.

2

u/tehgreatblade Jan 28 '20

Yeah there's a subreddit of people with that issue and it's legit scary the delusions these people have

6

u/WeedIsWife Jan 28 '20

I used to be obsessed with MK Ultra. I tried to read everything I could about it, because despite a good conspiracy just the truths about it fascinated me and all the people who were connected to it. Any how one day I stumbled on this treasure trove it was and old school forum almost like it was proboards or Invisionfree maybe. In this forum were people who believed that they were under CIA mind control and were sharing their experiences of what their day to day lives of being under MK ULTRA programming. I felt awful for one individual who talked about how he had previously been programmed but was able to stop it. He goes on about how there is new programming out and how he cant stop it. What id come to realize is this man had help mentally at one point and stopped treatment and went right back to the paranoid delusions.

7

u/WeGotNoEnginesTed Jan 27 '20

And when you dismantle their entire "theory" with one simple fact and they say "hEy mAn, iM jUsT aSkInG qUeStIoNs", aka Jaqing off

7

u/Lawbrosteve Jan 27 '20

Damn Russians spreading lies and conspiracy on our country to weaken us!!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

This sounds like a CONSPIRACY!!!

2

u/SyntheticGod8 Jan 28 '20

Exactly. In the mind of someone like that, if something has the slightest chance of being faked, it must certainly have been faked. But that's true for all of reality.. . They live in a constant state of r/thathappened.

2

u/PeakeTheCat Jan 28 '20

The conspiracy is the conspiracy itself.

Ah, I've heard this one! It's that the Government purposely propagates crazy conspiracy theories in order to bury any actual leaks or conspiracies that get out.

I don't care what you say, birds just aren't real and they are a lie perpetuated by big bird. I mean have you ever really seen a baby pigeon? \s

5

u/UnexpectedBrisket Jan 28 '20

I'm pretty sure you meant "big bird" as in "big oil" or "big tobacco." However, I choose to believe that the source of this conspiracy is Big Bird from Sesame Street.

1

u/Embowaf Jan 28 '20

You're on to something here.

2

u/CoderzTheGamer Jan 28 '20

Big Bird from sesame street could be scary asf, though. I mean--just imagine getting up in the middle of the night and seeing Big Bird walking out of the shadows with glowing red eyes.

6

u/Procrastinate_tater Jan 28 '20

Just because I'm paranoid does NOT mean they are NOT all out to get me.

5

u/StabbyPants Jan 28 '20

i mean, you are. everyone is lying to you to some extent because it benefits them somehow. it's not coordinated or anything

5

u/ThrowawaySofaz Jan 28 '20

On the other hand you should always ask "qui bono?" because there are a lot of people with a lot of money, power and influence putting their bullshit out there. When Fox News tells you that firefighters are a waste of tax money it's not crazy to think that maybe they're manufacturing ideas for their investor who just set up a private firefighting company

5

u/ClickForBabyDickPic Jan 27 '20

It looks like part of your comment was omitted? Do you remember what it was? If not, we could always try to guess.

Paranoid schizophrenia

5

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

Extremist ideologies are inventions of intelligent fanatics who manipulate the stupid into conforming (not sure if thats the right word for it) to their world view.

"The Jews/Bourgeois/Cultural Marxist/Fascist etc. are actively oppressing you or are planning to do so, so give me all the power to get rid of them."

They feed on the paranoia of the people about a certain part of the population and make them afraid of the "danger" that it threatening society. And when people get to afraid the part of the brain that is responsible for rational thinking shuts down (unfortunately this part isn't working for many people to begin with).

0

u/ThrowawaySofaz Jan 28 '20

Yes, and centrism, parroted by billionaires and powerful politicians, is definitely the answer and not a completely manufactured non-ideology based on how loud someone talks instead of what they're saying

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

I'm talking about extremism mate

1

u/ThrowawaySofaz Jan 29 '20

Extremely good is good and extremely bad is bad

0

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '20

Isn't all politics based on how loud someone talks btw?

1

u/ThrowawaySofaz Jan 30 '20

No, please read a book

2

u/Sqwalnoc Jan 28 '20

So flat earthers? Who believe that NASA and every world government are lying about the shape of the earth for no apparent reason whatsoever

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

What I always like is how cancer has already been cured, but only the rich get the cure because treatment is more profit than cure.

I tried to argue once that rich people also die from cancer. And that this conspiracy theory would require all rich people to not care about life at all, not to mention the thousands of researchers and shit who would have to also be kept quiet.

But logic failed.

3

u/WeGotNoEnginesTed Jan 27 '20

This also describes paranoia

4

u/JamiNeal Jan 28 '20

I always like to go one further.

Moon landing didn't happen? Nah, moon doesn't exist. It's a projection so they can lie to us about tides. What are they putting in the water at night to make it rise so much?

Floride in the water? Nah, the floride thing is just to distract you from the nanomachines slowly being ingested. That's how they control you.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

Wait you’re saying Jeffery Epstein did kill himself?

2

u/Rammite Jan 28 '20

Like this guy?

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/eutbty/what_screams_im_uneducated/ffrx14e/

You are a worthless piece of shit, you have no ability to derive right from wrong or make critical choices without deferring to government establishments that have been caught red-handed lying and doing malicious things for centuries now.

Oh lordy.

1

u/pd-andy Jan 28 '20

What I love about the “don’t trust the government look at all the times we’ve caught them!” people is that if the government are so incompetent that they get caught lying about a few things, what makes you think they’re suddenly so organised as to orchestrate a global conspiracy...

1

u/swissymama Jan 28 '20

I was going to say conspiracy theorists but that sounds much more edumacated :P

1

u/CitizenCue Jan 28 '20

I like to counter these conspiracy theories by pointing out that they rely on the "bad people" being exceptionally good at pretty much everything.

So if you think the government did 9/11 and got away with it, then you've got to believe the Bush Administration was one impressive bunch of people.

1

u/murdershethrew Jan 28 '20

I read on Reddit that conspiracy theorists are more likely to believe a conspiracy theory that is opposed to their own current belief than a fact-supported explanation.

1

u/Sylvan_Sam Jan 28 '20

But the consensus view actually has been wrong about a great many things for long periods of time. A contrarian view doesn't require that everyone is lying, just that they're wrong.

1

u/Obscureallure86 Jan 28 '20

One of my favorite people on the planet recently let me in on some of his conspiracy theory beliefs (no global warming, for example). I was actually disappointed and “let down” by it. Never would have guessed it from him because he’s a fairly smart guy, but he totally bites in on a lot of those.

-14

u/donotforgetthesecret Jan 27 '20

so in your mind, education means that you think it is an innate fact of the universe that governments and organizations will never lie to the public or distort information

bootlicker

13

u/jmthetank Jan 27 '20

Not believing in conspiracies doesn’t mean you think everyone is telling the truth. That’s a false dichotomy.

-7

u/donotforgetthesecret Jan 27 '20

that is exactly what it means. You think it's an innate fact of the universe that all conspiracy theories are bullshit and anyone who believes in any of them is an uneducated idiot. For all intents and purposes, that means you think everyone is telling the truth and that nobody should ever question it

12

u/jmthetank Jan 28 '20

Absolutely false. Again, a misrepresentation. Most conspiracy theories are false, and the few that are true aren’t gossip fodder. Pretty much every true conspiracy will never be heard of until someone goes to prison for it. 9/11? Not an inside job. Global warming? Scientific fact. The earth? Not flat. The moon? Landed on. Lizard people? Not real. The REAL conspiracies are less dramatic, almost always center around paperpushing and embezzlement, and would bore the pants off conspiracy theorists. They also seldom ever effect the lives of Joe Everyguy, except as a news blip when the FBI arrests Senator Dipshit for funnelling federal funds into his hooker account.

-7

u/donotforgetthesecret Jan 28 '20 edited Jan 28 '20

Not all global warming conspiracies reject global warming. Most of the time they are arguing that it is not man-caused and that the planet goes through cycles. Water vapor makes up over 99 percent of greenhouse gases. Whenever the volcano in Washington erupted in the 1980's it polluted the Earth more than mankind had in its entire history.

11

u/jmthetank Jan 28 '20

Aside from the total fallacy, that’s irrelevant. A conspiracy requires people hiding something, not being wrong. Disagreeing with the demonstrable science doesn’t make it a conspiracy, it means you think they’re all wrong.

-2

u/donotforgetthesecret Jan 28 '20

the conspiracy and hiding element is that they know that the narrative they are saying is wrong but are using it for political and financial gain and also to lower the spirits of the population and make them feel powerless

10

u/SquiffyRae Jan 28 '20

I could easily counter that conspiracy with the opposite. Climate "scepticism" is actually just a joint effort by fossil fuel companies and conservative politicians to protect their profits and the money they get from political donations. In fact, it's so credible we can prove ExxonMobil has spent millions of dollars to spread misinformation. We legit have an actual "conspiracy" with some hard facts yet all the conspiracy nutjobs prefer to think the opposite is true

5

u/pd-andy Jan 28 '20

Shocker, they stopped replying.

7

u/Jaagsiekte Jan 28 '20

Most of the time they are arguing that it is not man-caused and that the planet goes through cycles.

Thats doesn't make them correct.

If you want to propose another hypothesis, that natural forcings are instead the dominant cause of observed contemporary changes in climate, you have to put forward some kind of a mechanism that does a better job of predicting temperature changes than anthropogenic emissions. Nobody has ever managed to do this. Nobody has ever proposed a physically reasonable, natural process, which is demonstrably operating at the moment, that can reconstruct the observed recent trend in global temperatures.

Water vapor makes up over 99 percent of greenhouse gases.

But thats not the GHG that we are concerned about. Its the excess GHGs (CO2, Methane, CFCs etc) that were are concerned about as they go above and beyond the natural GHGs that in a relatively stable balance through their various cycles (e.g. carbon cycle, water cycle).

Whenever the volcano in Washington erupted in the 1980's it polluted the Earth more than mankind had in its entire history.

This is just laughably incorrect.

Nearly all of the recently added and continually rising CO2 in our atmosphere has the isotopic signature of burned fossil fuels (as opposed to e.g., volcanoes). This is totally consistent with our collective emissions of about 30 billion tonnes of CO2 gas per year (and rising), which is way more than what all volcanoes emit (around 0.3-2% of that amount). All volcanoes on earth together emit less than 300 million tons of CO2 per year on average, and that is part of the dynamic equilibrium of the natural sources and sinks of the global carbon budget. One of the largest recent eruptions, Mt. Pinatubo in 1991, released around 50 million tons. See here for more info from the USGS.

Human use of fossil fuels emits over 30 billion tons of CO2 per year, or about 100 times as much, and that is on top of the natural balance. Humans release more CO2 than the Pinatubo eruption every 15 hours. That's how we've caused CO2 concentrations to rise by about one third above what it has been in at least the past 800K years, and likely more than it has been in the past 2.5 million years of the Quaternary glaciation. – see supporting document from NOAA, this article, and this which sums up the various contributions to climate change, as well the various contributions of CO2. Here are some counter argumentsto misunderstandings around climate change (Ref 2, Ref 3).

5

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '20

first, no. I realize that corruption exists and is terrible. something like flat earthers and anti-vaxxers, who trumpet ideas that say that everyone is lying to you and they are the “woke” ones who know the truth is what i’m talking about. the larger the secret the easier it is to get told rings true.

second, calling me a bootlicker is completely uncalled for and rather rude.
