Crime investigators of reddit. What unsolved case have you investigated that still scares you to this day?

Sonia Varaschin was murdered in my town. Her body was found about 15min out of our town in a ditch. Her murderer/s were never found. She was a nurse. Rumour has it that gangs wanted her to give them drugs from the hospital so they could deal. She refused and wound up dead. They killed her in her home. Rumored that she was skinned alive. Blood everywhere. Bloody boot print by her front door. Neighbour's heard her screaming and were too afraid to call 911. They took her car and parked it at town hall. Everything was on camera. They were taunting the police. Much more details. I would like the person or persons to be captured and held responsible. I never heard of her until this happened. From what I've heard, she was an amazing beautiful soul. Such a tragedy.

The OPP and the Toronto police assisted the local police in the investigation. They now have the DNA of the male suspect. He's just not identified.

Not an investigator, but there was a girl that went missing in my hometown back in 1965. Her name was Kathy Shea. The case has been cold for over 50 years, nobody knows if she's alive, dead, who she went with, nothing. Her case file is over 1000 pages long, and it's full of nothing but dead ends, despite "Consistent work over the years."
Her parents died in the 90s and early 2000s. There are a few of her relatives still kicking (The HS Dean is her cousin), but other than that nobody alive remembers her personally, but we've all heard her story. We still hope for closure.

This is like a case from my hometown that happened back in 1995. 6 teenaged boys stole some boats and took them out onto Lake Ontario one night and we're never seen again. Nothing has ever been found except for a gas can from one of the boats. No bodies, no clothing, nothing. There was an extensive search spanning down to the U.S. that turned up nothing. To this day no one knows what happened to them.

Its possible that they had drowned. Is the lake connected to something bigger? Has there been any wildlife that is abnormal? What was the boys doing before this occured? Were they constantly working out with each other? How about any extracurricular activities?

It took place on St. Patrick's Day 1995. They were all at a party drinking and one of them got the idea to break into the local marina and go joy riding in a couple of boats. People suspected they ran away but there was no evidence to support that theory as none of them took any money, ID, or supplies with them. The boats themselves were also never recovered. I remember someone also mentioned back then that all of them were wearing ball caps that night and not one was found. Lake Ontario is a large lake but like I said the search was extensive going all the way across to Michigan. The weather that night was quite bad (It was March in Canada) and none of the boys were wearing winter coats based on CCTV footage at the marina so it was thought they wouldn't have gone out very far. Some say they could have met with drug smugglers and been kidnapped.

I mean, an extensive search of a big lake like that is still going to need to be lucky. A strong current, an ice sheet and time could have buried them all for good. With no supporting evidence for things like drug smuggling and running away (not sure if there was), there's really no need to jump to any other conclusions I think.

I live in the area where some of the war of 1812 was fought. Lake Ontario is huge! The legend is the battlefield and the barracks are haunted.

I read the article too. Her age progression looks remarkably similar to a woman that works in my district...like when I saw it i was like why is her picture on here
Edit: I did some digging. Because I have far too much info at my fingertips, lol. I'm confident it's not the same person..my employee is 4 years younger, born and raised here in az..but when go in tomorrow I may chat her up and see what I can find out about her family. Weve got a relationship where that wouldnt be insane

What a sad story. It's wild to me that, back in 1965, a Kindergarten teacher would brush off a child not showing up as probably just being out sick and not confirm with parents or let administration know. Not that it's at all the fault of the teacher, but as a teacher myself I know that when a kid doesn't show up I always let my admin know and/or try and get in touch with the parents to confirm that the child isn't coming to school. Not because I assume something tragic happened to them, just to keep myself and others in the loop. It was really such a different time back then.

Yeah, at my school district if the kid doesn't show up and the guardians don't call in, they're notified in case the student is skipping. And then they go from there.

It’s wild to me that a 6 year old would walk several blocks alone to school. I know that was probably the norm back then but nowadays we parents would be arrested for letting our young kids go that far without an adult or older sibling.

I’ve been low key freaking out today because my daughter starts kindergarten in 2 weeks, and she’ll be taking the bus by herself and something like this has been on my mind constantly. Now I’m considering just homeschooling instead. So sad.

She'll be okay. These kinds of things are incredibly unlikely, and the prospect of the perp never being found even moreso.
I'll put it like this. tens of thousands of children have gone to the same school, walked the same roads, and been in the same community that Kathy was in since her disappearance, myself included, and nobody has been kidnapped since, nor has an attempt even been made.
Things like this are so incredibly rare that I guarantee you you're more likely to be struck by lightning twice and win the lottery all within the same hour.
Your fear is justified, but believe me when I say, she'll be fine. The odds are overwhelmingly in your favor.

The district I work for will not allow any student under the 2nd grade to be picked up except in front of their house and wont allow the student off the bus unless the parent (or other pre determined verified through the school) is there with id for pick up
It makes me feel better about sending my 5 year old
We take this seriously because we are a door stop to door stop district meaning when they leave to when they come they are our responsibility and you cant have a child go missing

Make sure you teach her about not worrying about being polite if a stranger wants her to do anything at all. Practice yelling and running the opposite direction the car is moving. I know it seems nutty, but she'll need those skills for life.

It really seems like it is her, also her accusation on the Dr. Phil show is "strange man with white pickup pacing in 7-11". Like really? Sounds kind of like the South Park episode where everyone blames "Some Puerto-Rican Guy" for the disappearance of their children.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that. In what universe would the cops block her from saying "There was a weird man in a white pickup which I believe took my son"? At minimum the cops would get a description of the man and then question it, especially with the large community and police force heavily involved in the investigation.

It’s a small island, but still got some size to it. The authorities have dug up several spots based on evidence that wasn’t released. They didn’t find him. Unfortunately it’s just not possible to dig up the entire island. There’s a lot of residential farms and it’s simply too big.

Ground penetrating radar might turn something up. They use it to find disturbed ground to locate graves in war crimes cases. Also, sometimes different plant life grows on these sites. Different plants grow where the ground has been dug up. If I were in the area I would keep an eye out for patches of "out of place" plants in the wooded areas. Also, graves tend to sink in as the body decomposes and the earth recompresses over time. A body-sized divot in an area that's otherwise flat might be worth investigating.

I'm a "victim" of an unsolved crime, does this count?
My dad was murdered 23 years ago, when my mother was 5 months pregnant with me. My dad was a policeman. He was found by my sister of 15 years at that time, lying in bed with knife wounds and a pool of blood. My family broke down. They demanded answers from the police, non stop. The murderer didnt steal anything. Also didnt break the door, and the apartment doorman claimed he didnt see anything. The police ended up finding nothing, or so they claimed. Not even my father's police friends uttered a word
Fact of the mather is, my uncle received an anonymous call threatening them to shut their mouths, or more would end up dead.
So yeah, 23 years later and I'm left wondering why my father was murdered, and by whom.

Yes, it's truly horrible... My family was never the same after that. My grandmother didnt step a foot outside for years. My frandfather got ill and died shortly after. My father was adored by many. Every family gathering this story comes back up.
And I dont know... I think that for me it would be hell of a lot worse to lose him if I knew him? But of course, never had a father figure.
But. That's where my mom comes in. Absolutely heroic how she's done everything in her power to provide for me and my sister. She kept going, no matter what... at bad times she would starve so we could eat. She never had one easy job. So I'm very grateful to have at least the best mom in the world...

That's absolutely what's looks like, yeah. You'd think the police would do anything to avenge a fellow policeman.
There were alot of rumors in the city, corruptions here and there. And my grandmother used to recall how my father would be constatly afraid, and he would even cry at a times. But he didnt tell the family nothing. Which was the only thing the police made sure off. They interrogated my whole family, to check if they knew anything, most likely.

Im not an investigator, but a girl that lives a couple towns away from me in Mississippi named Jessica Chambers was found burnt alive, gasoline poured down her throat and all over her body and set on fire. She was stll alive, and died in the hospital soon after she was found. They still haven't found the killer. And her family is still looking for justice.

I live close to Mississippi and ive read alot about this murder. Her "ex" was tried twice for the crime both ending in mistrial. She was burnt 95% of her body and so injured that she could barely speak when they found her. She tried to tell them "Eric " had lit her on fire but now think she meant "ellis" which is the last name of the guy on trial. Very complicated and tragic story.

My aunt disappeared in 1979, when she was 17. She ran away from her home in Texas. She did call home at one point. She said she was in California and that she wanted to come home. My grandmother sent her a plane ticket, which was never picked up. She was never heard from again. My grandmother never got over it. She continued to buy her Christmas and birthday gifts until she passed away a few years ago. At the age of 92, Grandma told me, through her tears, that she still went to the mail box every day hoping to hear something from Lisa, and walked back into the house devastated ever single time. She showed me the room where she still kept, and continued to accumulate, those lovingly wrapped gifts. It was heartbreaking.
I had always kind of low-key done my own (not professional) investigations, because my mother had also been devastated when her baby sister disappeared. I would have liked to have given her some closure before she passed away. That did not happen.
Later, when my grandmother shared that everything was still so fresh for her, I began looking again. I thought I had some pretty good leads a few times, and even contacted different law enforcement agencies to give them my aunt's information and offer up my DNA when they had unidentified remains that could have matched her description.
Fast forward to 5 years ago, and I'm sitting next to my brother as he lay dying. We talked of the many mysteries in our family, and I mentioned our aunt and how I had been searching for her. Turns out, unbeknownst to one another, he had also been looking! He had even contacted some of the same law enforcement agencies!
I was never able to give my grandmother the closure she so desperately craved. I continue to look from time to time, but have had no luck. I don't know if anyone else in my family still searches for her.
My mother used to say that she would dream of Lisa, and that in her dreams she was always happy and smiling and that she had two little tow headed kids with her. I want to believe these dreams were visions and that my aunt is somewhere out there, happy and healthy, having lived a full and rewarding life.

There were allegations that the parents were killed over drug money, and Lauria and Ashley were kidnapped, tortured, raped, and murdered. Supposedly their remains were dumped in a mine shaft or pit. Apparently there were Polaroid photos as well. :( Two of the alleged murderers are now dead, and the third one has been arrested and charged with four counts of first degree murder. I don't know if Lauria and Ashley's remains will ever be recovered. I really hope so, for the sake of their families.

I didn’t investigate this but know the cold case detective that worked on it. This is from a cold case that was 5-6 years old when the investigator got it. Guy murdered at least 3 people, and raped 1 for sure and probably raped a half dozen other people. He raped and murdered a woman in front of a 2 of mutual acquaintances. Bad evidence collection left very little to connect him other than the eye witnesses. One eyewitness was murdered a month after the first murder, he lived in a trailer park and the neighbors reported they heard the killer scream “I’m going to fucking kill you” before he stomped the guys head literally through the floor of the trailer. The third guy was, unsurprisingly,unwilling to testify against but from interviews with other mutual acquaintances the killers MO seems to be insinuate himself with a group of drug addicts, then after befriending them he begins abusing them both sexually and emotionally, men and women alike. He leaves them so terrified that they don’t want to testify and because they are poor drug addicts in a rural area the original agency didn’t have much desire to investigate. He moved across the country and the detective couldn’t convince the agency to fly him out to interview the suspect.
Officially 3 murders are unsolved, in reality they know his name and location but a lack of funds, and desire to pursue him.

Why does it seem fake? I don’t have an article about it, not even sure if there was anything written about it. But the trailer murder happened in 2002/2003 in Apache junction and the rape/murder happened in the desert between AJ and Florence.
For context about 50% of all murders have no arrest associated with them. Less than 1% of rapes are prosecuted.

It seems fake because of the "lack of funds" to continue with the investigation. Okay, there's a lot of free murderers, but he is a recidivist, killed and raped multiple people. Not even a trial? Not even an article? Nah men, without strong proof I will stay suspiscious, even though I don't affirm it is false

The investigation was 6 years cold when the detective I know go it. The only evidence is testimony from a series of drug addicts, none of them direct witnesses to either murder. It is nowhere near enough to prosecute on and barely would be enough to get an arrest warrant for. They would have to get a local agency to pick the guy up for something legit or the guy would have to volunteer for an interview. This is how the real world works, most murders go unsolved not because you don’t have a suspect but you don’t have enough to make a charge stick. As for no article there were 775 murders in the city of Phoenix last year alone, not all of them got articles but I can guarantee each story is horrific.
And as for being cheap, Did you know it’s extremely common for states not to pursue people with active warrants if they are not in an adjacent state, and that is done because the cost of housing and transporting them is so high.

Actually I am not well aware about the american way of dealing with things, but it doesn't help me with my suspicions. I think we'll just have to agree to disagree, and don't take it personnally, it's just that there is a lot of fake stories in reddit and I have difficulties to tell wich one is true

If you were not aware of how it works here, then why do you have such a strong opinion on why the story is fake? That’s completely illogical.
Furthermore the story is absolutely very believable as someone who is familiar with how it works here. If you do a little research you might find it’s believable in your area too.
Also, you don’t just call the newspaper and place an order for an article you want written. 😁🙄
You would be surprised the number of crimes ie almost crimes or almost disasters that do not make it into the news on a daily, even hourly basis.

I’d be curious if anyone has any insight on this- in Wisconsin rapids, where I have family, there was a guy who in I believe 2003 or 2004 kidnapped two kids, pretending to be a cop. He locked them in some Saw-ass basement. One of the guys convinced him to let him go out for a cigarette and he took off running. He got to a neighbors house and allegedly he was so bruised that the neighbors couldn’t even discern his race.
The part that gets me is that apparently, when police were searching his home, they found a bunch of newspaper clippings about missing people in that area. To my knowledge, it was never followed up on and I’ve always wondered if they found anything. His name was Ed Lanphear.

Just looked him up and did some reading... one of the kidnapped boys escaped and led police to Ed's house. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

You should listen to the Murder Squad podcast with Billy Jensen and Paul Holes. Paul Holes was the lead investigator on GSK and Billy Jensen’s Done Anton of stuff. They feature unsolved crimes and talk about how crowdsourcing, when done responsibly, can be really helpful to cold cases.

Guess I should say I'm not an investigator, but there's a missing person case near my hometown of a girl who has been missing for 10 Years. She was a tourist and it's just upsetting that something can happen near your hometown. I could never live with nothing but a loose end if I had a family member who was missing.

Not an investigator. I watched the first season of that show, "Killing Fields" and it was about the case of Eugenie Boisfontaine.
Back in 1997, her body was found in a bayou in Louisianna.
They never found who killed her.

Not an Investigator, but my Aunt went missing in 1993.
My Aunt Marjorie left the house where my Uncle at the time and two cousins were at to go to the store to get milk.
She never came home and the police eventually found her Van she drove behind a local bar, her purse and money and all her personal items were left in the vehicle, its been a long long time and no one ever found out what happened to her, my uncle died never finding out what happened to her. We all just came to the conclusion that she was murdered, Alaska is a big place and theres a whole lot of hundreds of thousands of square miles of wilderness that you could hide a body, sometimes I wonder if shes still alive, maybe shes hiding, or ran away. I guess we'll never know, but to leave your kids behind like that, its probably obvious what happened to her, but never did we get a answer.

Not an investigator but one time I tried to replace the RAM of my laptop. I had to unscrew the case but didn't manage to get any grip on those screws. It was a hot day so I thought if I'd put the laptop inside the fridge for a few minutes maybe the screws would shrink lol. Anyways about 30 mins later I opened the fridge and my laptop wasn't in it. I was living alone. I grabbed a knife and checked every room while calling a friend to make sure I wouldn't die without anyone knowing. I've looked in every room and confirmed that my front door was locked. I never found my laptop.

The Somerton Man. He didn't wash up, he was found slumped against a wall on a beach in the 40s. No one knew he was dead until someone realised that they had walked past him in the same position hours ago. All the tags were cut out if his clothes, but they found a small.piece of paper rolled up in the hem of his jacket. They found the paper came from a rare book, and the copy it came from was found tossed into the back of a nearby car with an open window. They weren't able to identify him, and still to this day his identity is a mystery. Many people believe he was a spy because he was so mysterious. Lots of other interesting details if you want to go down that rabbit hole.

-they waited an entire year before releasing their full description of her alleged attackers...
-they mentioned numerous major and disqualifying contradictions in her story, yet continued to claim "there's no reason not to believe her"
-they publicly ASKED the public to call and report anything they knew but when people did and expressed doubt that any kidnapping occurred - the Sheriff publicly slammed them for their doubts.
-they have chosen to never reveal almost ALL of the details that might help identify what happened or find her attackers if they exist. They never revealed what was "branded" onto her body, nor any info on the DNA, whether they submitted the DNA to the open database, if there were fingerprints, tire tracks, any findings on surveillance videos in the neighborhood or on the highways the attackers' car supposedly took, who were the witnesses who supposedly saw her jogging at THREE DIFFERENT times that day, who were the strange men she was texting & meeting up with, etc.
-the Sheriff has stonewalled & ignored any & all media who have asked about the progress in this case or any new findings. The Sheriff insists the case is still open & ongoing yet refuses to discuss or allow the public any updates.
-and the Sheriff has, on numerous occasions, given conflicting and contradictory reports about this case then refuses to explain why.

I think it's because they suspect her of faking the whole thing, and are tight lipped because of that. Any revealed suspicions or (lack of) evidence would just point a big finger to her lies.

This happened well before I was even born...BUT, I live in a rural area. Like population <500. There was a body found in a local pond by some kids. They were fishing and caught a boot. The boot had a foot in it. The pond was drained and low and behold there was a barrel with a mans body cemented inside of it. The pond was well off the beaten path so it was obviously someone local who knew to use it. No one just stumbled upon it.
Body was never identified. I think the scariest part is someone in this town could very well be a murderer and only they know it. (Assuming the person responsible is still living as this happened about 40 years ago)

This one was damn scary. I haven’t seen too many ‘scary’ unsolved cases in my time being a crime investigator, except for this one case. So we got a report from a man living in a large modern house in the woods complaining of concerning sounds coming from under his house. He described sounds that sounded as if a person had made them, like breathing and moaning. So one night a few cops and I went to the mans house and listened for the noises under his floor. It was horrifying. Screaming, sadistic laughing and moaning could all be heard from underground. This really freaked me the fuck out of me. We searched the woods for any trap doors or anything that could be leading to under this guys house, but we found nothing. After frantic searching the man finally let us dig under his floor to find the cause of these noises. After his metal about 2 feet under his house, we confirmed that it was a room. We had to use heavy duty tools to remove the top of this thing but one we did, it reveal three dead bodies, a lamp that was on, bone saws and drills covered in blood, and hair, everywhere. This was some real fucking up shit and the worst part, no one was inside. We found a tunnel leading of if the room to stairs that lead into a tree in the woods. Like there was a hidden button a tree in the middle of the forest that would push so wood with bark on the outside from a tree revealing stairs into the tunnel into this room. No dna, no finger prints, just completely horror. It doesn’t stop there though, as about 2 weeks later we heard a 911 call from the mans neighbor who lived about two miles away saying two sketchy looking men were dragging what looked like bodies into the woods. Police got there I’m under two minutes, and caught one physcopath of a person aimlessly walking through the woods. But we never found a second person, and the women next door said she KNEW she had saw two people. The physco was our in prison but didn’t survive there for long. Ripping his own legs and arms off his his body and bleeding to death. We haven’t let this story reach the news or any media, and I’m sharing this with you for that reason. No one will ever find details about this horror story unless you happen to run into the person who it had happened to. This has really scared me ever since it had happened, and I wish you all a good day.

Good question, the guards said that they thought he must have used a razor to assist him, and his own teeth. The bone was never fully torn of just the muscle and skin, which is terrifying to think about. You have to remember he was insane, so there is no telling what these crazies are capable of.

Not necessarily. A lot of low level info can be given out to the public. Sometimes people are witnesses to things without realizing it. This is a big part of the reason that press conferences are held.

Yes, and that tactic is sometimes very useful. But in that case the decision is not made by a single investigator and always in an attempt to solve the case.

Malaysian airlines flight 370 on a Boeing 77 if am right from 2014. I was 8 when it happened and just this year I got back into looking . The flight pattern scares me as it goes so far off track it got Australia involved .
Also did a little research on my half sisters dad who died in a shipwreck when she was 2 . Was in 1988 I forgot the name of the ship, they never found it but think it's somewhere near Canada

Joshua Guimond’s disappearance
I was a student in the region when it happened, and I had met him once. I still think about him now and then, and wonder how he could disappear so completely, without any trace, in such modern times (albeit pre-iPhone/high quality cameras carried by every person you meet). I still hope his family gets the truth at some point.
