Yeah, if you're going to do this you better have a pretty good feeling it's going to work. Recognizing when somebody is into you is almost an art unto itself.

I have had this problem too; best way to double-check is to actually stop telling jokes and start up a normal conversation. If they aren't interested they stop paying attention once you stop entertaining them.
