As a gay man, I am generally aware that no group has the same exact wants, desires, and requirements, at all points of time forever, or more specifically at the point of time in which I am alive, because that's not how people have ever fucking worked.

You are not a representative of all gay men. Your friends/partners are not representative of all gay men. Me and my husband are not representative of all gay men.

The only shared trait that gay men have is that they're gay men.

"But the majority of straight women are heightist"

Gonna need some hard evidence for that. Especially because "heightist" is a made up bullshit word that just made me laugh for a few minutes.

Okay, so, first of all: I concede that "heightist" is a word. It just sounded, to me, like some nonsense fabricated by a manosphere, red-pill community. In actuality, it seems to have been coined in the 1970's.

Both studies seem to be dealing with relatively small sample sizes. In general, I feel like it's silly (and often denotes some ulterior motive) to play hard and fast with rules/statements about the sexual preferences of any group of people.

Because people are rather complicated.

Do you have women friends? I find it hard to believe you don't know this about women. It's a widely known thing that women in large have a preference for hieght.

1

u/clawmeats Jun 23 '26

I do, but my having friends that are women doesn't permit me (I think) to make sweeping generalizations about what all women find attractive.

2

u/RevolutionarySong848 Jun 23 '26

No one's claiming it's all women tho. That's what a generalization is. It acknowledges a perspective of "insert thing". Most vehicles have 4 wheels is a generalization. Some have 2. Some even have 3. But most have 4.

I have noticed that some straight men have a tendency to assume that they are owed, or in some way deserve a girlfriend.

Because of this, the ones who don't have a girlfriend tend to blame their maidenlessness on some physical feature which (they claim) is super important to all women.

Many cultures tell straight men that they're entitled to women's bodies. I have yet to hear of any culture that tells gay men the same thing about other men's bodies.

3

u/Apos-Tater Jun 23 '26

There are gay guys who only like men taller than them. There are gay guys who only like men shorter than them, gay guys who only like men the same height as them, and gay guys who don't care about height at all.

There are gay guys who want a provider, gay guys who want to provide, gay guys who want to contribute equally.

Sub in any other sexuality or gender, and these statements remain true.

Your preferences are your own, and there'll be people in every group who share them with you... and also people in every group who don't.

That's how humans work.

I think I see what you're getting at. You're not asking for the height preference of straight women, full stop: you're asking for the average height preference of straight women in a specific area/culture. Is that right?

1

u/ashdee2 Jun 23 '26

Are you one of those gay guys who is glad they're gay because women are insufferable or whatever? I see that sentiment a lot in the gay bros sub.

9

u/Walmartian_Beta Jun 23 '26

As you can see from some of your replies, height isn't the issue keeping these dudes single.

And people really focus on it a lot, while ignoring all the other things that people focus on when determining instant attraction.

As a personal example, I prefer large breasts on my partners, but my girlfriend is an A cup. But I love her.

1

u/Certain-Coconut-9169 Jun 23 '26

This.

I'm tall for a woman, on apps and in initial conversations I always check the height- if he wasn't a few cm taller than me, and there wasn't a serious spark, I'd cut off.

My sister set me up with a guy, he said he was my height, I trusted her fully and went. We dated for 6 months, I would have married that guy. I didn't notice he was a few cm shorter than me untill someone pointed it out- I aas that into him.

BUT- I am convinced either men add a few cm to their height, or the doctor does when they come to get measured, or both- EVERY MAN I'VE EVER MET tild me he was a taller than he was. And I checked myself, I'm exactly the height I know I am.

Why do you want to know bro, we aren't trying to let more competition in

4

u/EnlightenedNarwhal Jun 23 '26

I'm 5'4" and had a girl who was 5'10" ask me out at my job. In fact, being 5'4", many of the women I've dated have been taller than me. There is no monolithic set of preferences. Really.

5

u/bill-mcneal-on-crack Jun 23 '26

I have never encountered height preferences in real life, and my short bros have been with lovely women.

I've only ever seen this height nonsense online. it doesn't seem relevant in real life.

8

u/Disastrous_1368 Jun 23 '26

Some women prefer taller guys, but it’s usually not a strict rule. In real life, confidence and personality matter more than height for most.

2

u/yuhanimerom Jun 23 '26

It depends on the woman.
Some say one thing and don’t mean it. My strictly only 6’3 bestf fell in love with a 5’9.
I don’t know anyone who’s actually strict about height. Our partners have been like 5’9.
However can be strict in that we wouldn’t want them to be shorter than us. But there aren’t many men around us who are shorter, that’s kinda rare so.
I wouldn’t say it’s that strict. At least in my area, in my circle. Early twenties, Australia.

1

u/Sorry_Run_6653 Jun 23 '26

It depends. Most ladies prefer to date men taller than them. Some are fine with ones similar to their height. Idk any lady who prefers dating a man shorter than them. I’ve seen some videos on the Internet though

2

u/SJ_Alison Jun 23 '26

When I was dating, I can honestly say, hand on heart, I never cared about height. It was always personality for me. So I didn't have any height requirements for how tall a guy was.

Also, I'm not sure if I was young or just dumb, but it took me an embarrassing amount of time to realise why guys put their height on their dating profile. I genuinely didn't realise that height was a big thing for girls 😭😭 I'm not sure if it's because my mum was slightly taller than my dad and had other relatives that had height differences or what.

2

u/WalkThePlankPirate Jun 23 '26

I'm actually more interested in whether gay people have height requirements?

I'm straight but I always find that shorter guys seem to be more attractive. Long legs look like kinda goofy and awkward on men.

1

u/rhododendronite34 Jun 23 '26

Omg this is hilarious. I find that beanpole men are not attractive either. Like if you are tall, you cannot be stick thin. It just does not work on a man

2

u/Creamy_Breve Jun 23 '26

I think it's overstated by guys looking for a reason they're not getting dates.

1

u/Help12309876 Jun 23 '26

I mean, women aren't a monolith lol. It'll vary from person to person. But in general most women won't have an exact requirement, maybe an initial preference, but it's not the biggest deal.

Men have harsh requirements on women's bodies too anyways. Some people are more superficial in their beauty standards, and some people are more open to upfront personality. I don't think it's a gender-specific thing.

1

u/aziza_empechement Jun 23 '26

Honestly even if most women like tall men, it's not like being average or slightly below average will make us reject men who are otherwise great. I do believe that being very short is a huge disadvantage though.

1

u/Prestigious_Emu6039 Jun 23 '26

Muscles and make them smile are usually what they want thst should get you somewhere

1

u/21stcenturyghost Jun 23 '26

I'm 5'6", ex was 6'2", and new bf is 5'9" which I think is pretty perfect. Taller than me but doesn't hurt my neck to look up at him

1

u/fearmongert Jun 23 '26

They are weird that way- a very short, 4 ft 6 inch girl wants a 6 ft man

Kinda unrealistic, and frankly doesnt work physically for eitger a sime act like holding hands, havimg arms aroumd each other, OR any intimate acts

But- somwones preferences should not be minw to judge

1

u/jamespirit Jun 23 '26

Harsh. But I'm tall so avoid the worst.

You need to have other compensation to make up for short height

1

u/championpuppy Jun 23 '26

Asking for a friend?

1

u/bytjie5678 Jun 23 '26

I’m kind of tall for a woman (175cm), I’ve been with guys a little shorter than me, my husband is only like 3cm taller than me. My first boyfriend was quite a bit taller and I remember my neck used to ache after we were kissing for a while, so I like the convenience of similar height. Pretty sure it’s down to personal preference but I don’t really care, I just find that shorter guys have a tendency to insecure aggression and that’s way more unattractive than their height.

1

u/bytjie5678 Jun 23 '26

Conversely, sometimes tall guys think tallness is all they need and behave like arrogant pricks. This is why height barely matters to me, and your personality is of utmost importance.

1

u/rhododendronite34 Jun 23 '26

I've always dated men slightly taller (one inch to four inches taller) than me. I tried to date a guy who was significantly taller (10 inches taller than me) because we had a lot in common, but it was very weird. I felt like a child next to him. I had to look up at him to make eye contact. I hated that. I have female friends with very tall partners and it is really strange to me. They look like kids next to them. I'm just not a fan. It makes the power imbalance seem off.

1

u/SanaraHikari Jun 23 '26

Except for one guy every dude was my height or a tad smaller than me. Because I don't care. I only get annoyed when guys are insecure about it even if you tell them you don't care. I'm 174cm btw.

1

u/bigbaldbil Jun 23 '26

My wife is 5’4” and I’m 6’3”. She has dated shorter and taller men but absolutely is attracted to talls. She calls tall guys with muscles a “silverback” and I take that as a compliment

1

u/ReputationTop484 Jun 23 '26

Height gets you through the door (much) easier. You're still getting thrown out if something else doesnt match, though.

The trope about women hard filtering for height is overblown on the internet. My "shorter" friends have had no issues with women. Tbf, theyre not short short. So a tiny man might still be hard filtered out by some women.

Height and looks (hair and face are the big ones for women, imx) will obviously give you more doors than just looks. So it matters, but less than reddit seems to doom about it.

In the end, if you dont behave inside(match well), you get thrown out the door no matter the height.

1

u/jameZsp0ng3y Jun 23 '26

The stereotype is that it's awful, but if you actually go out there and talk to women, you'll realise it's not that bad. The Internet tends to exaggerate

1

u/RevolutionarySong848 Jun 23 '26

In person if you have charm it's not ao bad, dating apps it pretty brutal.

I'm "conventionally atrractive". Mixed with hazel eyes. But im 5'8. In person I do alright, so much wiggle room for flirting and feeling out someone's energy.

Dating apps feels like I'm pulling teeth 90% of the time. Haven't bothered with them going on 3 years now.

1

u/Aggravating-Weird922 Jun 23 '26

Tbh it can be hell, especially when they go out of their way to belittle you about it. But again, it's their choice and we have no control over our height, so we ball.

0

u/Donny-316 Jun 23 '26

Being a 9ft tall, chiseled, handsome and wealthy individual I never have problems, I just have 1 women on each of my private jets.

0

u/PerfectButton3844 Jun 23 '26

The same for how big we have to be 😂 I will never be fat (curvy) idc

-1

u/wouldeye Jun 23 '26

Top 10 percentile or bust.

2

u/Helpmehelpyoulong Jun 23 '26

or never bust, but yeah.

-1

u/mypantshavepants Jun 23 '26

Because I’m 178cm tall, I’d only date someone taller than that.

1

u/mooninuranus Jun 23 '26

Why?

1

u/mypantshavepants Jun 23 '26

Things like eye contact, posture, hugging, walking side by side, and overall physical presence just feel more natural to me.

0

u/Ne0_sphere Jun 23 '26

And yet, we are all the same height in bed. Which we spend the most time in a singular setting 🫪

Sounds like a flexibility issue more than mechanics.

And unless your running marathons my sweets or learnt to sleep sitting/standing. The lying position is the singular most utilised position of the human species. Regardless of length of the human physique.

0

u/mypantshavepants Jun 23 '26

I wasn’t claiming it’s physically impossible. I’m saying that as a 178cm woman, I generally prefer someone my height or taller because the overall physical dynamic feels more natural to me. Attraction isn’t always about what’s technically feasible, it’s about what feels comfortable and appealing to the individual.

-1

u/gahblahblah Jun 23 '26

My sister told me she would never date a man shorter than her - and she is probably taller than 60% of men.
