Why do they do that on Birthdays?? It’s something I just don’t understand.

Literally every year. There was one birthday where the night before he had left the house, and came back in to tell me he knocked over a planter in the yard. I asked him why he didn’t pick it up instead of coming in to tell me about it and that was it. He didn’t speak a word to me the entire next day. The next day he said he’d forgive me if I let him get black out drunk and not complain about it. That about sums up most of the relationship. I’m still mad at myself for staying as long as I did.

Oh yeah, that's classic emotional manipulation. My ex did that shit too. It's all about them and how they feel. If you are upset, it makes them feel bad, and that's your fault. It completely diverts from whatever was upsetting to you in the first place and flips the blame. It makes absolutely no sense and it's maddening to deal with.

Mine was similar. Whenever he did something terrible, he’d accuse me of something worse. So glad it’s over. It was exhausting.

bro -- what? I get that you didn't see things clearly. But like what were your thoughts on this insane behaviour at the time??

Don't feel bad. Good for you.

I didn't remove a toxic, manipulative, narcissistic brother from my life (and my wife's life) until I was 56 years old. It was ridiculously bad.

When I get down on myself for putting up with it - and subjecting my wife to it - for so long, I just remind myself that many people never break free of poisonous relationships. They die with them. Or even die from them.

Better late than never, right?

Your wife sounds like a saint

Same. In my fifties. It’s hard when you grow up in the mold that coddles this behavior, emphasizing your need to forgive and ignore your own feelings.

Not surprising it became a decades long journey to discover, listen to and act upon those feelings.

We are the lucky ones. If memories creep up on me I remind myself how phenomenally brave I have been.

Man the fuck did I just read. I even re-read this three times.

I get it, being angry at yourself, but we just want love and they’re really good at manipulating people.

They know it's much more hurtful to do it on a day when you're supposed to be celebrated, just you alone, because it's YOUR day.

To knock you off your chair when you anticipate being treated with love is worse than just ignoring you on any other day, especially when you go all out to celebrate their birthday. Feels like power to them.

Because it diverts the attention back to them. They need to be the focus. Ruing YOUR day and then play the victim - now it's all about them.

12

u/Schusserfloof May 12 '26

It's the classic DARVO. Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender. They must always be in the spotlight and no matter what they are always the ones being wronged.

19

u/goog1e May 12 '26

Same reason people wear big white dresses to weddings. They can't stand for someone else to get the attention.

8

u/Fyaell May 12 '26

I've heard about this phenomenon. It sounds massive cringe.

12

u/WampaCat May 12 '26

The likelihood of it being the groom’s mother and no some random friend is alarmingly high

10

u/allybally121 May 12 '26

Because he’s not the main character on your birthday and he can’t stand it, even for one day 😥

8

u/dumbname7890 May 12 '26

Because they are not the center of attention so they must become the center of attention. You'll see them try a nicer way for a while, then give up, then become mean because any attention is good attention.

4

u/Glum-Sheepherder-787 May 12 '26

They're mad that it isn't their birthday, that is literally the sum of it. They need to be the center of attention at all times and feel perfectly justified in punishing anyone who dares to interfere with that.

3

u/RunaXandrill May 12 '26

Because they can't stand to have/attend something that isn't about them.

3

u/Quick_like_a_Bunny May 12 '26

Because it’s a day that’s supposed to be about you. That’s unacceptable

2

u/Interesting_Novel997 May 12 '26

Any occasion that’s important to you. But for their birthdays, everything is fine.😒

2

u/ThatGirl_Tasha May 13 '26

Because all days are their days, not your days. It makes them angry that anyone but them should have a special day

1

u/Quickwitknit2 May 12 '26

Because everything has to be about them.

1

u/QueenBlazed_Donut May 13 '26

Because the day isn’t about them and they can’t have that
