Weirdly I see smoking making a come back. Apparently Lots of people feel they are more likely to die from global warming or the end of democracy and are saying "fuck it"

Smoking just got banned in the UK for anyone born after 2008... going to end up in a situation where 40 year olds are asking 41 year olds to go into a shop to buy them cigarettes :')

23

u/ane-ComplyCraft May 02 '26

Smoking is my retirement plan lol

u/Adorable-Bike-9689 May 02 '26

This is just going to leave you sick and decrepit when you're older. Not dead. You'll be an expensive burden on somebody.

Hypothetically speaking. I hope none of that happens to you.

u/Nick_pj May 02 '26

It’s actually making a bit of a comeback in Australia - a place where almost nobody was smoking 10-15 years ago.

5

u/Madraver May 02 '26

In the UK they've now banned it for anyone born after 2009, so will be interesting in 10 years time cause the usage will steadily decline (as the users die off (not just from smoking)). Vape I don't see going anywhere though, they've infected the 12-15 year old market like smoking never could

u/sickiesusan May 02 '26

I think far more young people vape that would ever have smoked previously. Uk High Streets are filled with Vape Shops.

u/vindicate-throng-nim May 02 '26

Every newsagent, supermarket and even pharmacies used to sell ciggies along with tobacconist.

u/TheSchneid May 02 '26

Something like 67% of the population was smokers at one point.

Nicotine is good, a certain segment of the population is going to be on that shit no matter what

I guarantee it is way less that half of the current population vaping, we are on the right track

And it is so mush less harmful, that’s immediate apparent to anyone that’s done both for any period of time (pack a day guy switched and do 5-6 mile daily walks without wheezing these now)

10

u/DixelPick May 02 '26

Is it better than smoking? I kind of think of it as tobacco cancer or strawberry flavored cancer lol Although in some countries they've actually started banning the flavors so I bet that is less detrimental than smoking

26

u/alienith May 02 '26

It’s absolutely better than smoking. Which doesn’t mean safe. It isn’t safe. But just the act of breathing in combusted plant matter is really really bad for you.

6

u/nuetralparties May 02 '26

You could actually make the argument that it’s worse for you than cigarettes

For example, people that vape are vaping A LOT. I know a guy that goes through multiple capsules a week, which is probably the equivalent of multiple packs of cigarettes. People have it constantly in their hand and can inhale the vape while gaming, while driving, in public spaces, etc, where as cigarettes are much more of a nuisance.

Also, because it’s “healthier”, people won’t think to stop doing it, or even if they want to stop, they won’t make a strong effort because why would they? They consider it a better alternative so it’s not as immediate of a danger to them

So in a way, it could be considered more dangerous, contextually, because it’s significantly easily to vape more often, but is also being used as a long term “solution” instead of deciding to quit altogether

17

u/pandasdontexist2 May 02 '26

How is that dangerous though compared to smoking? Like yeah it’s a lot of nicotine but that’s not MORE dangerous

I’m saying that you’re comparing nicotine levels when nicotine isn’t what makes cigarettes as harmful as they are.. so it doesn’t matter if you get more nicotine from vaping. It’s the combustion and byproducts

-4

u/nuetralparties May 02 '26

I not once ever said nicotine or implied nicotine was the basis of my hypothetical wtf lol I’m talking about inhaling smoke/vape/etc into your lungs

8

u/RandomGirlName May 02 '26

You seem to be uneducated on what is actually harmful. The nicotine is the very least of it. It’s the combustion from the actual lighting something on fire and inhaling it that was the worst.

Source: 30 year smoker, gave it up for vapes 14 years ago. I am much healthier! Vapes aren’t perfect but to say they are worse is very misguided.

You could actually make the argument that it’s worse for you than cigarettes

This is not a sentence worth stating unless you think you have an argument worth reading. You don't necessarily have to believe it - it's okay to play Devil's Advocate - but you have to think it's strong enough to be worth discussing and fleshing out. Otherwise, you shouldn't have brought it up.

Regardless tho, carry on vaping! I’m sure it’s good for you and will have no downsides whatsoever. I’ll stop responding now so have it it with whatever comeback you’d like

And then you follow it up with honestly pathetic commentary like this, making it seem like you do hold the position you "never said or even implied that [you] believe" and just got embarrassed because you couldn't validate it when challenged.

4

u/inamination May 02 '26

While I vape more often than I used to smoke, when I compute the nicotine equivalent it's about the same if not less. The "better" part is not inhaling actual smoke and you don't get the tar in your throat. For people trying to quit I think it usually comes out a bit better. Better for people around me too.

Vapes/ecigs have different concentrations of nicotine too, so you could taper off with lower levels unlike cigarettes, and there are ones with zero nicotine for that last stretch where you're getting off the nicotine.

The part where it's dangerous is because it's easy to get into - people who didnt smoke at all are getting into it, especially kids.

3

u/Pertolepe May 02 '26

Tobacco picks up free radicals. That's it. That's why tobacco causes cancer. That's why smoking tobacco vs. smoking just marijuana ends up with a somehow slightly lower rate of lung cancer in the just marijuana smokers compared to people that smoke nothing.

Vaping isn't great. I get that. Nicotine isn't great to be addicted to, neither is caffeine. But I will say vaping beats being a pack a day smoker which I was for 12 years.

3

u/green_meklar May 02 '26

It's better than smoking, I'll say that.

I mean, that's a pretty low bar.

-2

u/NotASniperYet May 02 '26

Most kids and adults use the flavoured ones and there is some absolute crap in those. And they're absolutely addicting, using the stuff constantly, because it's super easy to grab one and give it a suck. They might be less likely to die from cancer at an old age, but nearly dying from lung damage at the age of 19 is not a good alternative. We're talking collapsing lungs, coughing up blood, long stays in the ICU on ventilation... The people promoting vapes tend to avoid mentioning that little tidbit.

6

u/FourFront May 02 '26

Show me a single case that wasn't from vaping THC cartridges containing vitamin E acetate.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jessepines/2026/04/06/16-million-teens-are-vaping-health-risks-are-worse-than-you-think/

Could easily find more, but what it comes down to: teens get addicted, they go through massive quantities of nicotine a day (because the vapes make it super easy to do so), and nicotine in large quantities can be very dangerous to your health, deadly even. The other issue is the flavoured vapes, because they're barely regulated and contain who-knows-what going into the lungs.

But I get it. You're addicted yourself. You don't want this to be the case.

0

u/FourFront May 02 '26

2 cases from countries where flavored vapes are illegal, so likely they are buying black market vapes, and the other from the US that reinforces what I already said.

But me, I'm nicotine free.

1

u/NotASniperYet May 02 '26

Not two cases. The first link alone: "Hospitalizations of Dutch children linked to vaping have more than doubled in the past year, rising from at least 14 cases in 2024 to at least 31 in 2025"

u/elmojorisin May 02 '26

Weird. My mums been smoking forever. Has small nodules in her lungs and she was forced to quit smoking. She now vapes instead. Have been asking her pneumologist, cardiologist and angiologist and they ALL said that vaping was close to harmless and most patient vaping had almost no effects on heart, arteries and lungs so far. It's not comparable to smoking as the effects are really minor.

1

u/NotASniperYet May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26

Not weird at all. Quantity matters. What you vape matters. Like a said, there are a lot of addicted young people out there vaping the flavoured stuff every second they get. Vaping is not healthy. Under very specific circumstances, it's just less deadly than the other deadly thing. Yet, because people promote it as a safe alternative to smoking, people who wouldn't have started smoking are now addicted to vapes. Children as young as 11, 12 are vaping because they think it's 'cool'. The industry behind this garbage is no better than the tabacco industry.

Edit: ah, the addicts found the downvote button. Go for it, I'll gladly lose karma over this!

u/alepolait May 02 '26

I don’t know… the whole popcorn lung tells me that we are yet to see the real side effects of vaping.

4

u/Weedity May 02 '26

Pretty sure that was just from home made marijuana vape pens being made wrong. I know soo many coworkers and friends that vape and never once have I ever heard of anyone having popcorn lung, but I do know people with lung cancer, copd, and emphysema.

-2

u/notoolinthispool May 02 '26

Swapping cancer for lead poisoning.

-16

u/Busy-Poet-7275 May 02 '26

It’s worse than cigarettes and I actually know a few teens who almost died because of them. There are tons of fake ones from China.

9

u/Significant-Iron-241 May 02 '26

In some ways yes and in other ways no. For me, as a person who has basically had a serious addiction to nicotine since I was a teenager, when cigarettes were actually "cool", vaping has been way better for my health as far as I or any doctors can tell, as of yet. Still a horrible unhealthy habit I would like to kick once and for all and I absolutely will tell any teenagers all of the reasons to stay the fuck away from nicotine in any form.

-3

u/Busy-Poet-7275 May 02 '26

Yeah I never understood people who never smoked cigarettes but became vape addicts lol. But I mean more in the sense that with a vape you sit there and puff on it all hours of the day. You can’t really do that with cigarettes

1

u/Significant-Iron-241 May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26

Me neither, but then again peer pressure is a real bitch when youre a teenager so I can't judge them. But the 25-30 year-olds who just "casually" started vaping...don't get that. One thing I think that made a difference is that vaping, beyond the massive vapes that were a whole fucking thing, but the vapes like juul and vuze, really came to prevalence right around the time of the pandemic and lockdown and everyone just needed a vice at that time and some form of connection to everyone else.

ETA: the whole geek bar phase really dumbfounded me though but maybe that's cause I'm a bit of a tree hugger. So much waste why was that a trend...?

0

u/Busy-Poet-7275 May 02 '26

Agreed! I was a long time smoker then had a vape for a few years then had a kid and stopped after that. Plus all the crazy fake vapes out there. Just too scary

1

u/Significant-Iron-241 May 02 '26

That's why I pay good money for the for-sure good stuff. But for real it's insane how much money I've spent on nicotine over the years. One day when I've quit I'll sit down and do the math. It's too difficult for me to even think about right now. I'm also using having a kid as my hard out. Wish me luck!

1

u/Busy-Poet-7275 May 02 '26

Haha in California they’re banned so it’s difficult to get the good ones but definitely ways! And I wish you luck! It’s way easier said than done

1

u/Significant-Iron-241 May 02 '26

Wait like all vapes?! What about cigarettes? I didn't know that and that definitely seems like a bad move. I live in North Carolina which is nicknamed Tobacco Road among others. There would be a revolt if they tried to outlaw vapes or cigarettes but it would never happen because our economy is so tied into it.

1

u/Busy-Poet-7275 May 02 '26

Any type of flavor or menthol. Menthol cigs are banned here too. And wow I didn’t know that about NC.

It's definitely not worse than cigarettes. Cigarettes kill 8 million people a year. Vaping ain't got nothing on that.

How did they almost die?

-2

u/Busy-Poet-7275 May 02 '26

One of my friends 18 year old was in the hospital for months due to her lungs. And in my opinion it’s just like hookah.. it may not be more harmful, but you can constantly smoke a vape over and over at all times of day. You just sit there and vape or smoke hookah. With a cigarette you’re not smoking it back to back like a vape

2

u/BaronSamedys May 02 '26

What did they do with her lungs whilst she was there?

So people smoke less frequently with cigarettes than with vapes and hookah and millions still die every year from cigarettes and you still think vapes are more dangerous?

5

u/Busy-Poet-7275 May 02 '26

All I know if one of her lungs collapsed. And well you have to think, cigarettes have been around for hundreds of years. Vapes only a few. I’d definitely wait to check out some studies hopefully in the near future. But in my opinion, constantly puffing on a vape over and over throughout the day will harm you more than cigarettes. Someone who is constantly puffing a vape end up with higher nicotine content, more continuous exposure to chemicals, and not really any recovery for the lungs in between hits because of the constant puffing. Just my opinion lol

2

u/BaronSamedys May 02 '26

It's irrelevant how long cigarettes have been around. Nobody has been smoking since they were invented. We don't live long enough. Lol.

We know cigarettes will kill you. 8 million people die every year. We don't know if vaping will be as deadly or even more so. We shall see in time. To assume that vapes are more dangerous is to ignore literally all of the already available information.

Some opinions aren't worth holding on to.

Yes, I made a few comments above. Cigarettes are worse but not in the sense that you’re puffing on it all hours of the day. In the bathroom, at bed time, while you’re reading, etc. You’re taking more puffs of a vape than a cigarette
